The JETBOIL ZIP: A MASSIVE WASTE OF MONEY?

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This is an honest review of the JetBoil Zip camping stove that asks the ultimate question; IS IT WORTH IT?
The build quality is high, as you would expect, but it's also heavy and lacks some features you might expect on a cooking set with this price tag. Is JetBoil a popular brand due only to great marketing, or is it really worth more of your money than loads of competitors' equally or greater featured alternatives? I have been using The JetBoil Zip for a while. It has accompanied me on several camping adventures and hikes. It has not let me down, but then again, neither have my other current stoves. 🏕

    I have a zip, and it works perfectly for my use. I "hike" around on a ebike, and the fact to have a hot coffee, chocolate, tomatosoup or whatever; on the go is priceless, its almost faster than my waterboiler at home😊

    It’s definitely a good bit of kit, if used in the right situation to fully take advantage of it. To me, in my use case, for the money I still consider it wasteful.

    You don’t have to have noise - turn the thing down and it is quiet. It is far more efficient on fuel than the BRS 300T and will also burn better in windy weather. I fought against having a Jetboil for years, but gave in and wish I’d done it years ago - superb bit of kit 😬

    I see the zip locally for $65 3/4 of the year. I have 2. One that I backpack with and one that I keep in my truck most of the time in a go back with food water and candle blankets. I use them both regularly for coffee at work, dehydrated meals. I will admit it’s not a cooking unit heating up a can of soup is tedious but it boils water fast and easy. I love them!

    I bought the Jetboil Zip last Thursday (19th Jan) from Millets in Shrewsbury. They have them on offer for £65. My BlueLightCard gave a further discount reducing it to £53. For what I'll use it for, it will be fine. I must admit, I thought it came with the Pan Steady but that's another £13 from gooutdoors. The packaging is a little misleading. Still, I'm happy with my purchase. Great review. Thanks

    I've had a Jetboil Flash for over 10 years and I'm quite happy with it and it works really well in windy conditions but I also have an Alpkit Kraku which is cheap and tiny and I take when I want to save space. I'm not sure if I would replace the Jetboil if I lost it, I might swap to a cheaper version. Cheers dude 👍

  • @KernowCamps

    @KernowCamps

    I'd guess that 10 years ago the options at the time were significantly more limited, not to mention their availability? I'd also hazard a guess that JetBoil's were comparatively much less expensive? Looking at the Flash today, I'd say it is a far superior product to the Zip. The Zip seems to me, when comparing to the Flash, simply a way for JetBoil to offer a slightly cheaper product to give the impression that they are far more affordable. The fact that the Zip doesn't include a piezo igniter, but the Flash does, but the Flash costs around £15-£20 more is sickening to me. The Kraku looks like a good bit of kit. Very similar to my BRS 3000T, but far better build quality (looks nicer too). If I ever become dissatisfied with the BRS I might upgrade to the Kraku myself! The fact that you state that you might not replace the Flash if you lost it, and would instead look to a cheaper options, even after 10 years of use speaks volumes to me about how you, and possibly many others, feel about JetBoil's. Thanks for watching and for your comment Tony!

    Personally I'd be loathed to spend that much. I tend to take BCB stove that cost me £2.50 and some firedragon thingys and wait half an hour gasping for a cup of tea. Got me kelly kettle too, which is cumbersome but fun to use, or an old stove. I think it's just each to their own at end of day. I'm constantly on a budget anyway so if I was to go for that kind of set up I'd probably get the Firemaple. When out hiking/camping it's about chilling out and taking things at a slower pace. Anyhow, enjoyed your review. 🙂👍

    Love the BCB Firedragon! I actually forgot that I even own it, it got buried in my camping cupboard. Gonna have to dig it out for my future super scientific test comparison! (Tis a bit slow though, as you say 🤨) Thanks for reminding me. Each to their own indeed, as I think I mentioned, JetBoil marketing has managed to convince people through great marketing that their products are akin to the Holy Grail of stoves and I really have to disagree. In my considered opinion they’re like introducing city life to the countryside… out of place on a chilled and relaxing camp.

    I like my zip, it was costly for a stove that is essentially for boiling water. The main reason I purchased the stove is that it is relatively safe to use compared to other stoves especially when out with the grandkids and my dog, less likely to tip and spill and no open flame, possibly burning. Good point! It certainly is a good bit of kit, and if you have a usage scenario where no other stove will do then it’s certainly not a waste of money. From my point of view, that of a solo backpacking Wild-camper, it’s overkill.

    I’m on the fence about buying one. I get why you said what you said and for you yes it’s not worth it. Some people are missing the main point with these though. If you’re camping out of your car or doing short hikes etc then yes these are probably not worth it. They’re more designed for mountaineering for example where the only thing you’ll ever need from a stove is to boil water for freeze dried meals etc and you want to do it in the quickest and most efficient way possible and having to carry the least amount of gas. I asked a guy at a store today and he said you can use cheaper other brand gas canisters which I would. I didn’t want to be dependent solely on Jetboil canisters either; I hate it when companies do that sort of crap! There’s a reason Jetboils are also issued to US Special Forces out of all the things they could be issued with and it’s the same principle. They’re not the best or only option for everyone and they were never meant to be. Only reason I’m considering one is boiling water on ultralight hikes and multi day trips in the mountains where weight does matter. Thanks for the video…some people love or hate these and for them, they’re both right but all feedback helps! All about what your purpose is…
