This is a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon... but more than that this is the 4xe. 14 years ago Jeep shared with the public their vision of an electric wrangler, and while their metrics were a bit ambitious they turned that vision into reality so let's talk about it.
Under the hood we have a 2L inline 4 cylinder turbo which is what you can get in other Wranglers and that might not sound like much but combined with the electric motor this thing makes 375 horsepower and an impressive 470 lb/ft of torque which is the same amount of torque as the 6.4L v8 392 wrangler.
What they have here is a 270-hp turbocharged inline-four between a 44-hp motor connected through the accessory belt at the front and a 134-hp motor taking the place of the transmission's torque converter at the back
All this power goes through an 8 speed automatic transmission with a transfer case that offers 2H rear wheel drive, 4 wheel drive auto and 4H and 4L for the enthusiasts out there.
** EPA fuel economy of 49 MPGe with the battery fully charged and a dismal 21 miles of pure Electric driving.
So great power and incredible full economy for a wrangler, whats not to love? Well unfortunately, there's more to this story we need to tell, so let's get behind the wheel and dive into that thought a bit more.
The issue is when you run out of battery power, this being the heaviest wrangler out of the bunch coming in at 5,322, without juice it only manages to muster around 20mpg combined which is actually the third worst only behind the manual V6 and 392.
HOWEVER...This jeep rewards those who are religious with charging and those with short commutes
So the 4xe has a few modes for you to choose from, you have your full electric mode, which again you’ll have the 21 miles of pure electric driving, your e-save mode, which basically just uses the 2L turbo to do your driving so can save your electric driving for a trial or whatever.
Honestly, not really sure why you’d want to save that unless you’re trying to sneak out of your parents house.
And finally you have the hybrid mode. How this mode works is, if the battery is depleted or the driver asks for more power than the electric motor can deliver, the 4l kicks into action. Hybrid mode is when the Jeep is at its quickest.
So that’s the 4XE stuff sorted. And that’s important, but at the end of the day, behind the wheel you’re still driving a Wrangler Rubicon.
-The damping is a little stiff, but it will articulate off-road and that’s the point
-It’s solid front axle and the steering provides next to no feeling and it’s difficult to tell if that’s the fault of the power steering or the A/T tires
-The cabin is horrifically loud, especially on the highway because this one is fitted with the sky power roof
-There is no lane keep or lane centering with the adaptive cruise
-And this is one of the most expensive specs Wrangler you can buy AND THERE’S NO HEATED SEATS
- I’d like to be about 2-3 inches lower in this car, love this sky one touch top in the summers but its extremely noisy on the highway.
-Wired apple carplay
-Rear view camera is actually of decent quality
However, while there are a few things that make this less than perfect, the charm of the Wrangler overpowers the annoyances. Even in the early wintery months in Wisconsin here where the Wrangler should be at its worst, the unique charm of the iconic SUV is still intoxicating. And now with with the additional of the electric range and the improved economy off the hybrid mode it’s easier than ever to convince yourself to put a Wrangler in your garage.
And let’s not forget, it says “rubicon” on the hood which still means something.
-upgraded axles
-front and rear lockers
-Disconnecting sway bars
-reinforced suspension
-KO2 tires
-unrivaled approach departure and breakover angles
-And i know so many of you will be concerned about this, but YES you can still ford 30 inches of water even with the battery pack.
And then On the exterior, the only main differences between this and a normal rubicon is the surf blue accents you have on the tow hooks in the front bumper, the 4xe logo on the hood, and obviously your waterproof plug for charging the 14 kwh lithium battery which is located under the rear seats

The engine can charge the battery. However, regardless of the vehicle that will always be inefficient due to losses in any energy conversion system.

the 4xe engine does not charge the battery enough and not over 55 mph.. that is incorrect. it is this car's fatal flaw.you will constantly have to charge to achieve the MPG and the engine will not supply enough charge to not run on highway. this is why the MPG is very low when you run out of ev only %
