I was coaching a 7th grade middle school basketball team during my 30 year teaching and coaching career.. During tryouts the principal came to practice one day to ask me if a kid who had just transferred into the school could be on the team. She explained to me that his sister, who was going to Cal Berkeley at the time, had to take him and his sister in because his parents had been shot and murdered in a jewelry store robbery in Sacramento. (See news article, UC Berkeley News) - Sister joins sister at UC Berkeley) I of course agreed, but unfortunately the kid was not very good and couldn't make a basket if he took 50 shots with no one guarding him. He ended up being a great kid with a good attitude and I knew that this was definitely something that was helping him through this tough time. I had made sure that everyone on the team scored during the season and he was the only player remaining that hadn't scored yet because he flat out refused to shoot. It was getting late in the season and his opportunities were running out, so I decided that he would get every shot for an entire for the entire second half. I told him at the half that he was going to shoot every shot until he scored or the game was over. The kids on the floor and the bench knew how important it was for him to score. So every person on the team did whatever it took to get him the ball by playing good defense, rebounding, setting screens for him and he took the next 20 shots or so until finally near the end of the game, one of his shots finally went in. I had to call a timeout because everybody on the team was so happy for him they wanted to congratulate him and share in his joy. Everybody on the team was so proud and excited that they had done something to help this young man out. It was a great moment and it was important to every single person on the team.

The coach should have been fired after that season because he can't see talent when it's right in front of him.
