Yi Sun-sin: Even though Korean wants to include Yi Sun-sin (李舜臣) as one of the three Greatest Admirals of the world, Horatio Nelson of the Britain who prevailed in the Battle of Trafalgar, John Paul Jones of the America who defeated the British for its independence, and Heihachiro Togo of Japan who defeated the Russia’s Baltic Fleet, he was not even a supreme commander, nor did he prevail in the battle that Koreans claim to have won. To start with, throughout their history, Korea was the weakest in the region. Since the time of Yuan Dynasty, Korea had been a tribunary state of China for almost one thousand years. They always asked other countries to fight for Korea’s domestic issues like in the Korean War, and this is why they have no true national hero. Yi Sun-sin was merely a commander of a single fleet out of many Joseon fleets, certainly not the admiral or the commander of the Ming-Joseon combined fleet. Not only he failed to defeat the Japanese navy, he could not prevent them on the sea, allowing them to land on the Korean Peninsula. In fact, in the first dispatch, Japan conquered Seoul within one month, and Pyeongyang within two months capturing the princes of Joseon as a hostage while there was NO Japanese commander killed except for one who was assassinated during hawking. Japan at the time was the hay days of samurai and had the largest number of guns in the world with many experienced samurai in communications and modern battle tactics of the day. Korea on the other hand was merely a tribunary state of Ming with NO guns. There is no way Korean could beat Japan by itself. The only military exploit that Yi Sun-sin had against Japan was when he attacked “a supply fleet” and temporally cut off its supply route. But this is by no means “destroyed" or “defeated." His strategies were more like those of pirates or guerrillas, setting fire on ships at night or attacking from the back of Japanese fleets after agreeing on cease-fire. Coward and so typical of the weak. And in the end, Yi was killed in a revenge batte of attacking Japanese after the cease-fire. Later, since the military leader of Japan, Hideyoshi, who planned to conquer China through Korea, died of old age in Osaka, Japan agreed on cease-fire and retreated. It is a blatant lie for Koreans to say that Yi Sun-sin was a great admiral of the world, defeated the Japanese navy, or is the one from whom the world’s other admirals learn from. However, you could say that he had some brain, avoiding front-to-front battle with the Japanese on the sea.

@@hayek218 Nice speech. Here's why its wrong. The chinese were extremely hesitant to help out, because it seemed to them that it was a lost cause, a hopeless war. Yi requested numerous times to the Ming emperor for backup, but every single one was rejected, especially after the entire korean navy was destroyed because (I'll admit) the korean king and commanding admiral were complete idiots and sent Yi to prison. It was Yi that convinced the Ming emperor to help out on the seas. Because thought the japanese were completely dominating the war on land, because of Yi, they were not able to take complete control of Korea. The video makes it seem like the moment the Ming arrived, they started winning. Though this is true, it underestimates the amount of influence Yi had on the outcome of the war. Saying the Ming won the war for Korea is like saying Canada won D-Day for the US because they sent 1 000 troops to dday and then SUDDENLY the nazis started losing. And just for the record, Yi did not "light ships on fire" while the japanese regrouped. He actually had lots of internal issues, with korean defectors lighting his ships on fire, if anything.

So many ignorant and boisterous commentators with shallow nationalistic rhetorics from both my home country China and neighboring Korea. When can we learn from history in a more constructive way? I admire Admiral Yi Sun-sin's outstanding tactics and Korean's patriotism in defending their nation. But don't forget Ming's help and sacrifice from generals like Deng Zilong who fought bravely against the Japanese as well. China and Korea have a long history of friendship and cultural exchange. However, hatred-driven comments from the younger generation of China, Korea, Japan, and Vietnam have pushed us East Asians further away from constructing our own entity like the EU to compete with the rest of the world.

Its the same in Japanese history but its a bit true.. the reason is, almost no one liked Hideyoshi,.. he was born as a commoner, a commoner leading an army not that admired by Japanese which we all knows,Japanese is too prideful and full of themselves.. They were just there because of the Old Oda Clan, and of course they were waiting for a reason to overthrow the Toyotomi Clan, which then in 1598 after they return to Japan, Hideyoshi then killed its a bit suspicious if you see it after they go back they kill their leader, well we can assume the reason for their supply for not arriving at all two time at that. Ahhh. . I like everyone talking about who lost but didnt look at the reasons of their losses..

I'm back! In this video, see how Toyotomi Hideyoshi's ambitions led to a disastrous war resulting in the loss of millions of lives. The war led the Joseon dynasty of Korea into a spiral of decline (I have a video on that too, by the way :P) and, coupled with other conflicts, put an enormous strain on the Ming dynasty's economy, leading to its eventual subjugation by the Manchus. As for Japan... well, Toyotomi ended up dying and his family fell from their position of power. By the way, the reason why the negotiations for a ceasefire lasted 4-5 years is because Toyotomi kept demanding such ridiculous things as: -Taking the Ming imperial princesses as his concubines -Receiving the southern 4 of Korea's 8 provinces -Taking captive all of Korea's princes

龘龖龍育月 Master "Ming China also sustained a heavy financial burden for its role in defending Korea while also fighting several other conflicts in the same decade. The war also indirectly weakened China's position in Manchuria, which gave the fledgling Manchu chieftain Nurhachi an opportunity to expand his influence and territory. Nurhachi's expansions would culminate in the eventual collapse of the Ming Dynasty and the rise of the Qing Dynasty in 1644." -Wikipedia, citing Prof Barry Strauss, an American historian I'll add that other wars also contributed to the collapse of the Ming in the original comment.

Under the rule of the Wanli Emperor, Ming China quickly interpreted the Japanese invasions as a challenge and threat to its tributary system.[36] The Ming's interest was also to keep the war confined to the Korean peninsula and out of its own territory (to avoid territorial destruction);[37] they entered into the conflict by dispatching reinforcements to attack from the north. In the engagements that followed, the majority of the Joseon army was focused on defending the northern provinces from Japanese offensives, while also supporting Ming army campaigns to recapture territory occupied by the Japanese. These Ming-led land campaigns, combined with the naval warfare waged by Joseon navy, eventually forced the Japanese army to withdraw from Pyongyang to the south, where the Japanese continued to occupy Hanseong and the southern regions with the exception of the southwestern Jeolla Province.[21][22][23] The pursuing Ming and Joseon armies attempted to advance further into the south, but were halted by the Japanese army at the Battle of Byeokjegwan.[38][39] Subsequently, the Japanese armies launched a counterattack in an attempt to reoccupy the northern provinces but were repelled by the defending Joseon army at Haengju fortress. Additionally, Joseon's civilian-led Righteous Armies actively waged guerrilla warfare against the Japanese forces in the south, which weakened the Japanese hold in the cities they occupied.[40] Afterwards, with supply difficulties hampering both sides, neither the Japanese nor the combined Ming and Joseon forces were able to mount a successful offensive or gain any additional territory, resulting in a military stalemate in the areas between Hanseong and Kaesong. The war continued in this manner for five years, and was followed by a brief interlude between 1596 to 1597 during which Japan and the Ming engaged in ultimately unsuccessful peace talks.

The Dragon Historian Thanks for this video. I've already read the 2017 re-writing of the English Wikipedia article on the "Imjin Wars" and it's mostly written from the Japanese perspective but still fairly written I suppose. But seeing a map and timeline of the war makes it much more clear that even the first Japanese invasion was doomed to failure as soon as the invasion stalled near what looks like Pyongyang and then pushed back to Hansong. There was just no way the Japanese army could feed itself with such poor logistics which were also under constant disruption by Joseon's navy. I think I'll read "The Imjin War" by Samuel Hawley as it's one of the very few books written on the 16th century Japanese invasion of Korea that is written in English and with the Korean perspective in mind. In the US, what little literature available on the Imjin War is written from the Japanese or even the Chinese perspective but never from the Korean perspective. Most likely because the political outcome of the war was negotiated exclusively by Ming and Japan to the exclusion of Joseon.

Treaty of Shimonoseki 1: China recognizes definitively the full and complete independence and autonomy of Korea, and, in consequence, the payment of tribute and the performance of ceremonies and formalities by Korea to China, that are in derogation of such independence and autonomy, shall wholly cease for the future. Articles 2 & 3: China cedes to Japan in perpetuity and full sovereignty of the Pescadores group, Formosa (Taiwan) and the eastern portion of the bay of Liaodong Peninsula together with all fortifications, arsenals and public property. Article 4: China agrees to pay to Japan as a war indemnity the sum of 200,000,000 Kuping taels ( 7,500,000 kilograms/16,534,500 pounds of silver ). Article 5: China opens Shashih, Chungking, Soochow and Hangchow to Japan. Moreover, China is to grant Japan most favoured nation status for foreign trade. (which is equal to, not above, the trade relations granted to UK, US and France in 1843-44 and Russia in 1858) The treaty ended the First Sino-Japanese War of 1894-1895 as a clear victory for Japan. In this treaty, China recognized the independence of Korea and renounced any claims to that country. It also ceded the Liaodong Peninsula (then known to the Western press as Liaotung, now southern part of modern Liaoning province), and the islands of Formosa (Taiwan) and Penghu (also known as the Pescadores) to Japan. China also paid Japan a war indemnity of 200 million Kuping taels, payable over seven years, and the signing of a commercial treaty similar to ones previously signed by China with various western powers in the aftermath of the First and Second Opium Wars. This commercial treaty confirmed the opening of various ports and rivers to Japanese trade. As a result of the Treaty of Shimonoseki (1895), China recognized the "full and complete independence and autonomy" of Joseon. In the next year Yeongeunmun was demolished leaving its two stone pillars.

What is "History" about? Is it for political or ethnical conflicts? or human itself? I believe I'm not wise enough to answer this question, but just hope the undergoing and following researches will help people form health ethnicity and empathy. People nowdays tend to only focus on "statics" and figure out accurate territories and ethnicities. Of course, those works are important to solve morden issues though, not the all of its role. It has no use as a subject, if unable to represent the vision to understand human and only aggravates the conflicts. we need to think of that people at that period also had their own lives and that you're also a part of the history which will be recorded in the future. In addition to arguing with truth of the history, we need to live more independently and try to make wise political division, with the lessons from the past, as an individual.

When Japan invaded Korea in 1592, Korea was defeated on all fronts. The Ming Dynasty of China, which was supporting Korea at this time, fell into a financial crisis due to this war. I'm sure you're only learning history that is convenient for you, so I'll tell you this: Of the three great conquests of Banreki, this war was the one in which the most silver was spent. His other two wars combined did not reach the funds used for this war. More than 7.4 million taels of silver were used in this war, while in other wars he used 800,000 taels and 2.4 million taels of silver. Approximately 80,000 Japanese soldiers died during the two dispatches to Korea, but half of them died from infectious diseases and the remaining 40,000 died in battle. To kill these 40,000 people, the Joseon Dynasty lost 260,000 soldiers and the Ming Dynasty lost 38,000 soldiers. Where is the victory? Including civilian deaths, the total number of deaths in the Sino-South Korean coalition is likely to exceed 1 million. This war was not a big deal for Japan, but the Ming Dynasty and its vassal states suffered irreparable damage (lol) The number of troops dispatched to Korea at that time was 150,000, 25% of Japan's total military force. was. was. Do you know of any small country that could not protect itself from this 25% total military force and asked China for help? (Laughs) Then Japan made peace with the Ming Dynasty and withdrew without paying any reparations. By the way, the Joseon Dynasty was refused participation in negotiations by China. It seems that there was also a sailor who was considered a Korean hero who made a surprise attack on the retreating Shimazu and was killed by Shimazu's casual soldiers. Did you know that during the heyday of the Edo period, Japan was an economic power that surpassed Britain and Spain, and even just before the Meiji Restoration, Japan's GDP was slightly higher than that of the Ottoman Empire? Did you know that even just before the Meiji Restoration, Japan's per capita GDP was half that of the United States? Korea has always been a small country, but Japan has always been a large country.

SanFranGiants14 well obviously Japan needed to conquer Korea first to achieve anything meaningful, that Korea “refused their request” was just a pretext. You really believe that 157000 Japanese soldier would just peacefully pass through the country if Korea let them? And who with a right mind would let that huge army into their country without any resistance? Not to mention that at this time contact between the imperial governments of Japan and Korea&China were extremely limited, and in the latter‘s eye the former were not much more than a bunch of barbarians and pirates. I don’t disagree that Korea was subjected to bullying in the past, but I mean if you’re in history major, what would you expect? That big country would never bully small countries back then? During the Ming dynasty relations between two sides were generally very good.

Japan says it should be grateful for the unwarranted invasion of Korea because Japan built all of Korea's economic infrastructure. However, South Korea lost all of its economic facilities in the Korean War caused by the North's invasion. Korea started again from zero. Excuse me but you guys were the same in the Vietnam war, and the Japanese didn’t rise at that time since they were being occupied until 1953, both Japan and S.Korea rose during the Vietnam war which is around 10 years ahead of the Korean War. Thus your government “borrowed” Japanese books to make your own book, literally copied the Japanese in almost everything. Continue with the Vietnam war, you SK troops massacred our people, burned our villages like monsters, the American had some mercies, while your “pitiful” troops killed our children, our women. Hell they even had to kill their babies(because they cry) so that you guys won’t know where we were hiding! We lived in hell hole for 30 years, all we need now is just an apology and just move on. But judging from your behavior recently like how you nagged us in 2020 because you guys claim “UpPeR cLaSs”, even when japan and Korea apologized us in 2016. You guys aren’t any different from your northern neighbor. That does make sense why it took japan 70 years to apologize, you guys deserves those treatments than anyone else. Some Japanese soldiers from WW2 fought with us during the Vietnam war, they even helped us after the US lift the embargo like giving us some of their old technologies. We were grateful because of those because of how the embargo annihilated us, maybe the famine in 1945 caused by the Japanese was insane and unforgettable, we still forgive them because how they treated us right after. But we will never forgive you guys for you genocides, please stop being butthurt towards the Japanese. You dirty rats will never get a proper apology when you guys just keep acting like “we were the only victim of the Japanese” while looking down, treat us southeast asian even worse than those “lower-classes” in your damn society, deny everything you did to us. Don’t get me wrong, what the Japanese did was unforgettable and unforgivable, but you guys weren’t any different and y’all totally deserved it.

You tried to erase Ming from the event by using the title" Joseon and allies" by right you should put "Ming and Joseon" instead, you should know the fact that before Ming China entered the battle Korea was almost gone case, the entire Korean peninsula was almost conquered by Japan, if without Ming China's help nowadays there would be no more korean race. You tried to emphasize the sea battles that korea won over Japan but you ignored all the more important land battles,if without the land battles fought earlier korea would be gone, Korea was weak in field battles and lost rapidly during the earlier stage of the war, most of the land victories against Japan were won by Ming instead of Joseon,Korea relied heavily on China to fight the field battles, that was why Jeseon called Ming troops as "天军" - soldiers from the heaven, this shows how much Koreans admired Ming China's armies during that time.*****

***** The only reason I put up a separate naval battle counter is because naval battles cannot be easily shown on the map (similar to what EmperorTigerStar did with his Anglo-Dutch Wars video). And I'm pretty sure viewers can decide for themselves the Korean army's performance in the early stages of the war. You know, from the fact that Korea lost two provinces and their capital to Japan in two weeks. And while the Ming army was indeed instrumental in repelling the Japanese forces, the Korean civilian-led Righteous Armies played a major role as well - they were at the least more active than the Korean government's forces. "Joseon and Allies" is more fit than "Ming and Joseon" because, first of all, it started as a conflict between Joseon and Japan and it essentially ended the same way, and thus putting "Ming" in front of "Joseon" seems like a strange idea. (Besides, anybody who's able to read the notes by the side would know that Joseon and "allies" basically means the Ming dynasty and her vassals.) The war was *entirely* fought within Korean territory, more Korean troops were killed than Japanese and Chinese casualties combined, and the war's most long-lasting effects were indeed on Korea. It's not like the First Sino-Japanese War where the war was fought in Korea but Korea was not an active participant. And about the Koreans calling the Ming army "soldiers from Heaven" - that was not because of the Ming intervention in this war. Joseon had called the Ming dynasty things related to "Heaven" since the beginning. Sending envoys to Beijing was called "Visiting Heaven" by the Joseon government. This attitude would change during the Qing dynasty, when sending envoys to Beijing became "Visiting Yan" rather than Heaven. The practice of calling the Ming "Heaven" was not a practice deriving from, or limited, to this war.

@@MatteoYoon I must correct some mistakes of your previous comments. 1. You have written "I'm just pointing out that China only joined the war effort after seeing Yi Sun Shin destroy the Japanese fleet at Myeongnyang." : Myeongnyang battle happened on 1597-09-16 during the second invasion. China participated the first invasion on 1592-06 with 50,000 troops, which ended in year 1593. The second invasion began on 1597-02 and China sent its troop on 1597-02 and arrived in Korea with 30,000 troops in 1597-03. So you see, China participated the war far more earlier than the Myeongnyang battle with a large troops. Your comment is wrong. (Data from wikipedia en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_invasions_of_Korea_(1592%E2%80%931598)) 2. 李舜臣Yi Sun Shin's main contribute is to limit the supplies of the Japanese troops, which is great and legend. But he is just a part of the whole war. The people, no matter Chinese or Korean, spent their lives to fight face to face with 140,000 Japanese troops and attacked the good defended cities which Japanese occupied, contributed more than Yi Sun Shin. Without them, Japanese could easily dominate all the ports in Korea and the fleet of Yi Sun Shin has no where to go. You have not only insulted the chinese soldiers which died in this war, but also the 18,000 Korean dead troops and millions of korean dead civilians which have fought for the mother land in this war. 3. I think without Yi, the war will last a little longer. But the Japanese have also their limit of war potential. Japan at that time war not comparable with the war potential of Korea and China combined. But the victory of Yi has saved a lot of civilian in Korea and raise the confidence, which is deserved the name of hero. But giving the the victory of this war to Yi is totally wrong. The victory is because of the contributes from all Korean people and the helps from China.

@@galecarp ok. I made it sound like I'm a terrible Korean nationalist. Let me rephrase, sorry! Yes, Ming China had a HUGE impact on the outcome of the war. But they were reluctant to join because of how CRAP the Korean foot soldiers were. However, Yi Sun Shin's navy was the exception. He lost exactly 0 naval battles, and devastated the Japanese navy and supply routes. He is the sole reason why Korea didnt instantly lose to Japan. He cut the supply lines from Korea to Japan using his navy, and thus, it didn't matter how terrible the Korean foot soldiers were doing, because the Japanese soldiers were trapped inside Korea now. Seeing this, as well as a 12 vs 200 victory for the koreans in the battle of Myeongnyang in 1597, the Ming joined the war effort. And then, yes, the foot soldiers of the Ming were able to push back the Japanese. But not without Yi Sun Shin. I'm not exaggerating, literally, without him, China would have lost. Here's why I say this: In one of the final naval battles of the Imjin War (I forgot the name), the Ming and Korean navy's were fighting alongside each other. Yi was actually shot and and killed, but his plan to surround the Japanese fleet and flank them was carried out by his son. When the battle ended, and the Ming general saw that Yi had died, he weeped, saying "even in death, Yi has saved us." Even the Chinese general back then admitted that without Yi, the war was hopeless.

All you can do is to regurgitate the fabrications that your stupid government keeps on fabricating in order to hide the fact that they are so ashamed about: Jumong, Gojoseon and Goguryeo were not Korean but only conquered a part of Korea; the kings of Silla were Japanese from Japan; since the time of Yuan Dynasty, the Korean Peninsula was a dependency of China for almost one thousand years; Korea was so poor and hopeless that their ancestors asked Japan to annex and modernize; the independence of South Korea was not fought for, but it was given by the US.

While it's true that Yi did a lot of the work and that Ming did not really tons of effort into this war, the main forces on land were still Ming soldiers, without whom the war could not have been won. I don't know where you got the impression that "The Chinese were not cooperating with Korea or taking the war seriously or even participating". Almost every major land battle after 1593 were mostly fought by Ming soldiers. Pyongyang, Byeokjegwan, Jiksan, Ulsan, Sacheon. They also provided substantial naval support in the final battle of Noryang.

Korea, both North and South, has never invaded nor attacked another country in its 5000 year history. They have fought amoungst themselves, but never have they taken over nor attacked another country. I am not sure where you got that fact, but I would like to know.

1701 MatteoYoon 5000 years? Since when did Korea become so old? Even older than China’s history of 4000 years?

@@user-rg1lu7tn6s well, ok. *Technically* Korean history is only about 2000 years and Chinese is 4000 years, but that's only recorded history. People have lived on the Korean peninsula for 5000 years, and in China for 6000 years.

@@user-rg1lu7tn6s actually, no. The first korean country, I guess you could call it, was the Gojoseon Samguk Yusa, which dates back to 2333 BCE.
