The Italian Who Took The 100M Olympic Title: Marcell Jacobs

Спорт

In this video I talk about the new 100m Olympic Champion Lamont Marcell Jacobs.
Lamont Marcell Jacobs was born in El Paso Texas to an African American father and Italian Mother.
He is the first European to win the Olympic 100m title since Britain's Linford Christie at Barcelona 1992
He is also Italy's first Olympic sprint champion since Pietro Mennea took the 200m at the Moscow Olympics in 1980.
His 100m Gold Medal Win in Tokyo put an end to 25 years of dominance by sprinters from the Americas.

I'm hoping Italy can win the gold in 4x100m, it's really tight so could happen. Which is more impressive when you factor in Tortu is not in the best shape coming from a rescent injury, I think is not far-fetched to expect both Italy and Japan at their best to be able to give the USA some competition in the relays this next years.

Tortu was always considered the best italian sprinter until Jacobs started to take the spotlights from him. I think he must have suffered the criticism from the professional environment surrounding him. For me, his tears after the race are the proof of the redemption he was so hardly searching for. It's like an heavy burden was lifted from his chest.

Congratulations to Jacobs and Italy for their Olympic success this year. Edit: In the video I said "this the first time Bolt hasn't competed in the Olympics since 2008." This is confusing because he was in the Olympic finals in 2004. I phrased that incorrectly and instead should have said "this is the first time Bolt hasn't competed in the Olympic finals since 2008".

We (italians) have been expecting him to break the 10s barrier since 2019. His main problem were his start and relaxation against fast competitors but as we all saw when he won the 60m euros he fixed that. It s also important to know that when he broke the Italian record in may he jogged that time because he wanted to break the record in the final but unluckily he got injured missing the final and stopping for 2 months.

Well, I knew for sure that the casual Olympics spectators didn't know nothing about Jacobs, but I think that anyone involved in sprinting (coaches, athletes, sprint enthusiasts) should have known him. Since 2018-19 he showed an incredible unexpressed potential to anyone who knows a little bit of sprinting biomechanics. We all knew he had the sub 10 potential for at least the last 2 years, but he used to underperform in the important events against tough opponents. So the two main problems with him were the start (in Doha 2019 he didn't made the final because he stumbled in the first 10 meters in the semifinals) and the psychological approach. With his coach Paolo Camossi they worked a lot on the initial phase of the race trying new things, finally taking his start to an élite level, and the 60s in the indoor season clearly showed this. He also worked a lot with a mental coach that helped him a lot, apparently there was an issue with the relationship with his father that was pretty much non existent, that was holding him back. In May he showed up in the first race with the 9.95 (new italian record) in the first heat and slowing at the end, and he didn't want to run the final. Then he had a minor hamstring issue warming up for an event, and stopped competing for 3-4 weeks. The next races were the three (I think) at the Diamond League, with the first one finishing 1st and the other two taking a 2nd place behind Baker and a 3rd behind Baker and Simbine. This was with him coming off an injury and gaining back his condition. So yes we definitely knew he was in Tokyo to at least fight for a medal and that he already had the sub 9.9 potential, which appeared clear after the first race at the Olympics when he clocked 9.94 slowing down again the last meters. The rest is history and I think the heats and the semifinals gave him a further confidence boost before the final.

Kerley should've known about him... 9"94 in heats, 9"84 in semis... he won silver with this time and it was 0"02 faster of his PB. Jacobs is not an unknown, it's Kerley's fault, and again, without any favorite at gold, and with the enthusiasm of Tamberi (team-mate and friend) winning High Jump gold medal, he did this. Btw, he was the world leader in the 60s in this winter and his major problem is the start, so Jacobs is not that much of a surprise.

@Track guy Its nothing to so with BUILD. Blacks have more fast twitch muscle fibres overall. So they have a genetic advantage before any training even starts. But it's not unique to them. If you took a 100,000 Italians and trained them all in sprinting. And a 100,000 blacks. No question there will be alot more fast blacks. But there will be fast Italians too. And then it's a numbers game and PERFORMING WHEN IT COUNTS. Which neither Bromell or Bingtian were able to do in Tokyo. Do you realize that If Bingtian had run his semi final time in the final he would have taken the silver? But he couldnt deliver when it mattered. Bromell would have won that race with his 9.77. But he couldnt even break 10 seconds in Tokyo. So nobody cares. The 400m hurdler Karsten Warholm delivers when it MATTERS. He came to Tokyo a double world champion and world record holder. And shattered his own world record. With a time that nobody will break for at least 20 years. Benjamin did well too with his time. Both shattering the world record. That's what people remember.

Interestingly, he also used a particular "car chasing technique", basically chasing a car that would travel at 50 km/hour with an open cabin behind: in such a way, he would be able to get rid of air pressure and get used to high running frequencies. www.occhionotizie.it/allenamento-innovativo-jacobs-inseguimento-auto/

I can tell you that unless you were into athletics nobody knew who Jacobs was in Italy either, personally I only knew Tortu because he made the news when he broke the 10s barrier.

Italian athletic was stuck to Mennea's training concept for decades only in the last years with him and Tortu we manage to move on although the goal with his times was the final not a medal I voted Bromell as champion too I think this is an example of the importance of peaking at right time

Nah, I'm european, I barely heard of him, he really improved recently, I don't think anyone really knew of him much... Tbh I think european tracks fans know pretty much of the same guys as in the US, for the most part, I'm sure Italians knew more about him, of course, but I'm from Portugal, the only great sprinter from here is F. Obikwelu.

Guess what, in Italy we have developed a new cyborg technology that hugely extends the human limits. That's why he wasn't well known until now, he must have been transformed during the first pandemic wave for other purposes, but it turned out to be especially beneficial for his athletic abilities.

Like, I didn't mean to represent all of Europe, I'm sure most Italians knew about him, Europe isn't like the US in that sense. Yeah, I did see him in the 60m European Indoor Championships, but that was this year and to be fair winning European Championship doesn't mean he is favourite to get any medals in the olympics and 60m doesn't necessarily mean that much. I just checked some stuff, he did have pretty great marks in the long jump, but in the 100m his PB was like 10.2+ before the pandemic (Doha)? I really think it's a matter of pandemic, I really didn't expect that, I had higher expectations of other european guys like J. Vicaut and even F. Tortu before the olympics, but M. Jacobs really has great talent.
