I mean, one of the big points of breaking the legions into chapters was so each chapter would develop its own culture. Meaning even if one chapter was corrupted it’d less likely that chapter could corrupt others, since they’d have that extra hurdle to overcome. So Ultramarines successors being so different from their founding chapter actually makes sense, that’s kinda the idea. Also they tend to follow the codex more in the spirit that was intended, ie a guide book rather than holy writ. So in a way they tend to follow Guilliman’s orders more so than his firstborn sons.

Ultramarines took in a lot of loyalist units from the traitor legions, and post second founding passed them off as ultramarine successors. Example is silver skulls, who are all but outright confirmed to be iron warriors. The evidence for the iron snakes being alpha legion is much looser. Basically comes down to their insignia being a hop skip and a jump from the alpha legion hydra, the hydra being itself a Greek mythos monster, their love of spears (Alpharius’ signature weapon) and their decentralized organizational structure. All of which could be just coincidental but it is pretty compelling.

@@GeneralBradley101VA I meant in terms of historical themes... half of all Ultramarines characters have greek names... the other half have latin ones. I mean, one of the big points of breaking the legions into chapters was so each chapter would develop its own culture. So Ultramarines successors being so different from their founding chapter actually makes sense, that’s kinda the idea. That, now that is cool as shit.
Ultramarines have a person with personality. " get the f out."
I think the Ultramarines have “weird” sucessors because 1) many of the common UM Sucessors are basically UM in all but name (ie Genesis Chapter, White Consuls etc) 2) UM are seen as the default or normal SM, so having a weird culture is an easy way to stand out (ie Doom Eagles, Silver Skulls, Mortifactors, Emperor’s Spears, Iron Snakes)

Iirc there are hints/theories that the iron snakes are in fact loyalist alpha legion successors.

I like to think that many of the "Ultramarine" successors chapters are actually from either the Lost or Purged Primarchs.
