The iRacing GripFlick Exploit

Ойындар

Running a 50.193 by taking advantage of a physics issue puts me 9th on the all-time practice leaderboard out of 3,637 total entrants, in some cases ahead of professional eSports sim racers.
This with a fixed setup after maybe an hour of screwing around, on top of five years of not playing iRacing, so just think of what could be done with an open setup and some dedicated practice time.

    That explains a lot. I was wondering why I couldn't hit an apex to save my life when I started playing AMS2 recently. Didn't realize it was years of iRacing teaching me bad habits. Apparently I was using this technique, but completely subconsciously. I also noticed when just cruising the back roads in real life that, sometimes, I was turning in kind of aggressively, just like in iRacing. Definitely gives me something to think about the next time I go the track.

    I've done this kind of thing in rF2. To me, it's not actually that initial turn in that creates the grip, it's the very minor counter steer a split second after. It's quite difficult to explain but in my view, counter-steering (NOT opposite-lock, just a very minor application of counter steer), produces more grip than normal steering. I'm not saying what you've shown is totally realistic, but I have noticed a similar effect in real life - where you're in a steady state cornering situation right on the limit of grip and you apply just a touch of countersteer and for a split moment you get a tiny bit more grip and some rotation from the car.

    Sounds to me like you are causing "neutral steer" this way. Neutral steer means that you have all tires at optimal slip angle. It is almost a 4 wheels slide basically. If you make initial steering input make car rotate, and then reduce steering input by a little it makes sense if car would get in a state of neutral steer in such way, and having car like that is fastest way around because you use all tires at their maximum in such way.

    Yeah, you'll notice this isn't occurring on a 2005/2006 Renault F1 car. That technique was very specifically that car during those years with a specific tyre specification and technical specs at a certain weight distribution. He found a real life exploit that was super specific to his situation. He no longer does it, because Pirelli tyres don't work like that. It is hyper unrealistic in stock cars. It can sometimes occur with open wheelers if it's a certain set of factors lining up.

    The tankslappers look real in example, tankslappers like that should definitelly be thing if you are not fast enough with countersteering as fronts grip up. But further in the video it definitely seems like something is messed up. Sounds like if "relaxation length" is absolutely messed up, or aero is messed up.. interestingly with more load, thus with more downforce relaxation length should actually even increase, but with increased level of grip... hmm maybe it could make a car launch like this into circular acceleration aka making a turn. I would suppose that perhaps this is even more of precission problem, it looks damn weird to have such a sudden flick and keep the precission. It is equally strange that you are able to keep the rear tires planted when doing this. At great speed relaxation length is going to be less noticeable, but tire should still roll a bit before reaching its 100% cornering force, not the opposite way like it is mentioned to be happening in iR in the video. Moreover, rear tires turns tiny bit later, and they also has to roll a bit before developing full cornering force. That should spoil up precssion at such instant inputs. Not to mention that rear end inertia effect, yaw moment should be significant to rotate the car as fronts bites so instantly and makes it rotate, rear tires should be working like mad in such case, perhaps even having no chance with car like this.

  • @41BOT
    @41BOT4 жыл бұрын

    I don't think you are wrong about this general issue. But I think you are wrong about one thing here when you show examples of real life and iracing tank slappers. Well of course I don't have to say that footage from real life of Gordon Smileys accident looks relaistic, but the iRacing footage with tank slapper example sure does, and that is something what rarely happens in other simracing titles, unless you sleep behind the wheel. It happens not because front end bite, not at all, front and always has grip, because that it is possible to keep oversteer under control without spinning out around center of gravity of the car. What bites in this case is rear tire. And when you say "the moment front tires change direction" you are incorrect, they always had the direction, but rear tires changed direction as soon as they managed to grip up, and that happened fast, forcing driver to countersteer super fast. It makes sense for rear tires to grip up so fast if slip curve at given small slip angle range changes a lot. In general I think most other simulation titles are missing tankslappers, because they are just never an issue, almost like if self alignment torque is always guaranteed to avoid a tanklsapper. But obviously IRL it is not always a case, obviously not so rarely the moment rear tires grips up is faster than self aligning of the wheels, and for a moment "car thinks" that it is making a turn instead of being saved from oversteer, or something like that. That obviously is the most likely to happen during high oversteer angles, when you have to countersteer significanly more. But real life material shows that it happens a lot.

    I guess I don't really see the point. Like... you're changing your input. And... trying to prove something happens without... actual evidence it doesn't happen? There have been examples of times in the past where iRacing managed to figure out that things happen that we don't even know happens irl, and the example was a completely different car. Just... seems like an over reaction and nitpicky thing? Like there's so many more exploits that are readily available that this hardly matters, and almost every sim has these. So it just feels like.... The sim racing definition of first world problem? Like if it helps them fix a problem, awesome. If not... did any of this matter? Like.... it's really funny seeing how excited ya'll are to be like "iRacing is so shit" and it's like... what does it matter? I personally find ACC and rFactor 2 to have some horrible physics but I don't blame people for liking them. rF2 also has some features I wish iRacing had, and I still sometimes goof off in everything. Just feels... pointless in the end. Like arguing between PS4 and Xbox One. No one really cares in the end. We're all nerds for playing racing sims.

  • @AustinOgonoski

    The point of this video is pretty simple. There are a fair bit of sim racers who are quite talented in other sims, but whenever they come to iRacing, they end up losing a lot of their pace and they don't really understand why because the cars don't feel quite right, but they can't put their finger on what's happening. This can help show them the... erm... unique driving style required to gain some of their pace back. Some people choose to laugh, because it's indeed quite funny that *this* is the simulator talked about on every single NASCAR broadcast, but I went from qualifying w/ a time of 51.5 in one session, to hitting a 50.1 in practice (a gain of 1.5 seconds!) and then landing the pole + winning in the very next race by doing exactly this. It's the closest thing to being a cheat without actually cheating and I feel like more people should know. Especially if you're hyper-competitive like I am and don't particularly enjoy losing a race without knowing the reasons why.

    I actually thought of GT Sport when I saw this video. There’s a similar quirk of physics in that game as well; if you watch replays of fastest laps for the weekly races you see a lot of people whip the wheel in at the turn in point to almost full lock, and do it on almost every turn. I always assumed it was the result of a physics model that was created to work with a gamepad, but it’s very similar to what is being described in the video.
