In the US -- A friend from childhood had a double proxy wedding ~12 years ago. Her husband was serving in the military overseas. I remember her facebook post was, "we found out that 10 days ago we got married via proxy" and was SHOCKED that it still went on.

🇭🇲 "GEE WHIZ" CLAIRE! You have left me with the biggest smile on my face 😊 and I thank you so much for that. I realised (of course) that Proxy weddings had taken place over many centuries, but I hadn't realised that they (in some situations, as explained so well by you) still take place, even today. Although! I did have an extra chuckle 😄 🤭 when you suggested how you wouldn't mind helping with proxy weddings yourself, as you could then get all dressed up (again) in your white 👰 wedding dress, as you 'stood in' for the intended bride. Then again! Why not? 👰 🤵 A NEW BUSINESS VENTURE: Maybe this is your way of telling us all that (added to everything that you and Tim already do) that you and Tim 😎 are intending to 'branch out' into the business world of proxy weddings. A suggested title to this side of your added 'business plan' (if you did go ahead) could even be "Proxy Weddings the Ridgway Way" with you 'standing in' for the bride, and with Tim 'standing in' for the groom. and "yes" I do have a very vivid imagination, but you started it, with this very interesting (and at times amusing) video, regarding proxy weddings. So Claire, you really can't blame me too much, as I did notice your own smile 🙂 and the very real 'glint' in your eye, as well! MY TRUE STORY: In 1980 we had a practice 'run through' of the actual wedding, on an evening at the church, several days prior to our wedding day, and even though just a 'run through' with minimal in attendance, it did turn into 'quite a HOOT' with our church minister's two little dogs 🐶 🐶 deciding to join in. cont.. You see! The floor of the church was so highly polished, that, as his two very cute tiny dogs came into the church, looking for him; on entering the church, they lost their footing 🐶 🐾🐾 🐶 🐾🐾 and came 'sliding' all the way from the front doors to to altar (where we were all standing) with the minister apologising profusely for the interruption; but with us in hysterics, laughing 🤣 so much. As these beautiful little dogs came to a stop, the minister also joined in the laughter, after telling his dogs to sit still. Which they then did. cont.. I mean! You can't make this stuff up, and it did happen, and it really did help to 'break the ice' (as it were) as although excited about our wedding day, we were nervous as well, hoping that the day all went to plan - which it did. Although (on the day) the minister kept his dogs locked up with their toys at his home, next to the church. Even though we had said to him that they could attend, should he so wish they do. 😉 LOL 😂 🤗 I had NOT thought about the above, for many years Claire. Thought about our wedding - yes! Friends of mine, two brothers, told me that their parents were married by proxy. The couple were in different countries when the ceremony was conducted.

I find proxy weddings to be so strange! I imagine if someone had a proxy wedding before meeting their spouse, which I assume is usually how it went. Then one of them passed away before meeting their spouse! You'd be a widow to someone you never met!!! I also think it's wild that proxy weddings still happen!

People started to get married by radio once that was possible. But king Oscar I of Sweden married Josephine of Leuchtenberg by proxy, before she travelled to Sweden. Maximilian of Austria married Marie of Burgundy, The Rich, by proxy to thwart the king of France (?) Later he tried to repeat this, but this time the king had his marriage annulled so that the bride, Anne of Bretagne, could marry the French prince.

Thanks again Claire. My ears really perked up when you mentioned that the Earl of Worcester was one of these proxies. I'm curious about this Beaufort relation of the Tudors. It looks like he may have been created Earl of Worcester at the time of Princess Mary and Louis XII. It seems that he maintained a better relationship with Henry the 8th than some of his other relatives.

I wonder what type of safeguard had to be in place for a proxy wedding to be legally binding? A preexisting marital contract signed by both parties? It seems to me that it would be incredibly easy for bad actors to force a union that one party had not agreed to by using this practice. For example, (not that this happened) how did Elizabeth I, for all her stalling, her back and forth, and delays that she used regarding her various marriage prospects during her reign, not end up married by proxy to any of her suitors? There had to have been a legal mechanism in place for these weddings to be valid.

Can you imagine the different types of proxy weddings and hand-fastings?

Since proxy weddings are legal and binding, are the representatives for the actual couple considered married to each other? I don't know if my question makes sense but I'm hoping that you understand what I am asking.

Since they’re representatives, they aren’t taking part as themselves, so no, they are not married.

Does that mean that the person doing the proxy were they actually married.

No. Because they were strictly representatives of others, not taking part in their own identities.
