The intricate history of the cantilever chair

The story behind the modernist cantilever chair is filled with accusations and legal battles. Designers like Mart Stam, Mies van der Rohe, Lilly Reich and Marcel Breuer were all involved in the early development of cantilever chairs but who came up with the idea? Stam, Breuer, a nowadays forgotten teacher at the Cologne School of Art or possible a Czech car manufacturer?

It's interesting how the designer (or designers) of the original chairs inside the Tatra Type 12 vehicle have been lost to history. The designer (or designers) had to design an appropriate chair that would work inside a car. I wonder if they ever noticed similar designs later.

Hope they noticed them and understood their huge impact on modern furniture! Sadly a lot of important persons are forgotten/unknown.

Ferdinand Porsche was greatly influenced by prewar Tatra cars when he design the Volkswagen Beetle. The Tatra V570 had air-cooled rear mounted 4 cylinder boxer engine. The Beatle is, of course, similar. Today the company makes all wheel drive trucks. So it is a very important company and thanks to your video I know that they contributed to furniture design as well.

thank you for this little knotty little history. Have a look at Tatra cars, truly revolutionary but like a lot of innovative Czech design - sunk by the second world war. I never knew they had originated these seats. Have a look at Voisin cars too. (Corbusier's car) ... ultra stylish (and a little bit architectural???) car magazines often suggest Corb. helped in the design - but architectural journals probably think THAT is too politically incorrect.
