The Internet's Most Disturbing Cryptid Encounter: Anansi's Goatman Story
Ойын-сауық
Cryptids are some of my favorite tales. A good cryptid story can keep you up at night, and why not? With how realistic some of these stories feel, it could happen to just about anyone. This is Anansi's Goat Man Story retold and analyzed.

Goatman isn't a creepypasta it's a legitimate urban legend, there's Maryland, Old Alton Bridge and a couple others I forgot but I'm too lazy to look up

I don’t think it’s a creepypasta as it didn’t originate on the internet and if I remember right the story appeared sometime during the civil war era and is more of a urban legend

The Goatman is definitely one of my faves out of recent creepypastas. It avoids a lot of the tropes you see in this genre and genuinely had me surprised in the directions it took. It all seems so realistic, too. People react realistically, the monster behaves much like a dangerous animal would, and it ends on a pretty reasonable note of being shaken up by the encounter, but everyone is otherwise okay. The setting, too, is absolutely perfect! Alabama and the surrounding areas are writh with legends of monsters, so this seems like any other one people would fear.

It really does. Especially when so few stories do.
Ahhhhh my favorite. I remember hearing MrCreepyPasta read this VERY early on in his channel and it always stood out. Among the Jeff the Killer and Slenderman creepypasta’s from that era, this was the one that REALLY got me. The concept of a monster that not only tries to trick its victims into thinking it’s one of them, much like the stories of skinwalkers or wendigos, but also inserts itself into the group and tricks them into thinking it was there the entire time is fucking EERIE to me. I still think this is the scariest monster creepypasta from that era, with It just beating out the Rake imho. I think there are better creepypastas, (Tales from the Gas Station, PenPal, and Borrasca come to mind) but especially for this era when it was full of Jeff the Killer knockoffs, lost episode and gaming creepypastas, I think this story truly stood out as a Diamond in the rough.

The Rake while it was a photoshopped deer/creepypasta is nonetheless similar to very real creatures known as Pale Crawlers or Skincrawlers.
I originally transcribed this one to the Creepypasta wiki way back, so crazy how far it went.
I love this story and for awhile, I had it known by heart and would share it as my own story as I did live in the same area for a time in my life. One thing that is frightening about the original story is that it never does anything explicitly evil. It could just as easily have been a creature that wanted companionship with people. Everything it "says" is borrowed from what it's already heard from the group and it never attacks them. That uncertainty of motivation is what makes the monster the most unsettling to me. Fun fact, If you head over the Mr. Creepypasta's first reading of this story, I have a comment there further explaining the alternate view of the goatman as a tragic and not malevolent creature that's pretty popular 9 years later.
I read this story years ago, as an adult and it gave me the creeps. Every now and again I’ll remember an element of this story and it’ll make my skin crawl just the tiniest bit. For me that’s the sign of a good horror story
That’s just my Uncle Frank man. He appears, reeks of something unknowable (probably alcohol, probably), barely speaks any understandable English and disappears before you can understand where he came from.
This creepy pasta still has such a grip on me that, when I first listened to it, it made me feel legitimately unnerved. One of the only creepy pastas ever to do that. It depresses me honestly because I haven’t been able to find another creepy pasta that has scared me as much as this one.
I was seven when this story was coming out and first saw it when it was being narrated by some of the creepypasta youtubers around that time. Back then I was still too young to really know if a lot of this stuff was fake or not so I would get nightmares about jeff the killer or the rake. So hearing that it took place in Huntsville Alabama where I live made it all the more scary. And it didn't help that there were woods right outside of the house I used to live in lmao.

@@Sacrow Can't wait! Also I'm not sure if you're taking suggestions for more disturbing creepypasta images, and idk how popular the creepypasta itself is, but the thumbnail image for The Thing That Stalks The Fields narration that CreepsMcPasta narrated nearly a decade ago absolutely HORRIFIED me as a teen, maybe that's something you could look into for an upcoming image video?

Actually the Satyr and Fawn are the oldest from Greece and Rome they go back 3,000 years.
I’ve always wondered about The Goatman. He was creepy and inhuman, sure, but in the end he didn’t hurt anybody. Just hung around and acted weird. I dunno, makes me wonder if the thing wasn’t just lonely or something.

Glad I'm not the only one to pick up on this. Unlike other shapeshifter stories from /x/, like your skinwalkers and fleshgaits and whatnot, the Goatman never harms anyone in the group. Even when it was alone with someone in the woods, particularly with Tanner's cousin, it never attacked him, despite having several opportunities to do so. In fact, the only thing it was ever implies to harm is that pig mentioned at the beginning, which just as easily could've been a pack of coyotes or a bear. Rather than a malevolent force of evil, the Goatman seems more like some kind of trickster, sneaking in to steal food and give people a scare, then disappearing when they notice something's off.
dude was just trolling them lol

This story is pretty interesting, it's up there with Ted the Caver I have a video turned into an mp3 of a reading of this on my mp3 player cause I like listening to horror stories while biking sometimes
I first heard of the goat man from a radio clip in the early 70s (Houston,Texas.) Apparently a family in Texas were camping when the goat man approached their site. The story goes they threw some of their dinner his way (BQ chicken) to scare him off. That story still makes me laugh!
This is so interesting i really enjoy this this one creepy I don’t know what it is but urban legends about old bridge really catches my interest like cry baby bridge and bunny man bridge

Huh. I was pretty obsessed with creepypastas starting around 2010 or 2012 and I don’t remember this one. I’m a little glad I didn’t, it definitely would have made me way more paranoid than I already was about Slenderman, lol.
honestly the only thing that bugs me about this story is that I used to live in Huntsville and its not a “rural” area. not fully urbanized, but definitely not “rural”. there is some forests but not like, woods woods. you have to go well outside of the county, maybe more towards tennessee to get into some deep woods-god I miss living in huntsville sometimes.

Because I am Native American Navajo my mom told me never talk about them
One of my absolute all time favourite stories. God, it hits creepy, uncomprehensible and familiar all at the same time. Fucking awesome story.
The flashlight in the woods is weird, but also atmospheric. I keep wondering if something will jump out of the dark
Huntsville Alabama's a wee bit close to home.
This story is one of my very fave Creepy Pastas. The other being Room Zero by Slimebeast. Just as creepy but not as criptid.
as someone who hikes and camps frequently (18M) i can say without a doubt this is the scariest story i have ever heard and mythical things like this is about half the reason i always have my.308 AR when i go hiking and i NEVER go alone
Tbh it sounds like the goatman just wanted friends because it didn't do anything
I cant believe it....a "creepy pasta" that actually spooked me..
play the system, call the name of a native american monster which would come over if you scream its name and have the goatman and it fight.
I’m from Louisiana and there have been stories of a goat man by the Native American tribes from the region. I also have visited some of the “rumored” areas north of Dallas
so idk if it’s cap but my dad and my uncles have a story where they were in my great grandparents house looking out the door because they were hearing noises and they seen the goat man in the back neighbors window in a shed
Can i ask If you can do the legend of the bunny man I heard it a few years ago

Personally i rhink the scariest is internet horror story/monster is "Fleshgait" by EmpyrealInvective. It's a 10/10 for me. You really have to pay attention to the details if you wanna fully understand it and it's the kind of story that makes you think "wow this could be happening to me right now and i wouldn't even know until its too late". Also love how the ending completely re-contextualizes the first paragraph. I definitely recommend it for anyone who likes a weird creepy atmosphere simikar to the goatman story.
