    Unfortunately that's the power of Tommy. He alone was able to get people on the hype train. I'm kind of surprised how people didn't compare this to the failed Nintendo WiiU since design wise, it was more or less the same type of console, except way less powerful than the WiiU.

    In all fairness the people at Atari Age were comparing it far more to Atari VCS and Coleco Chameleon at the time. And that’s a very low bar to pass. And with Tommy it wasn’t just he did video game music but also he hooked people with his claims of many industry connections.

    Intellivision was the first main console I was introduced to as a kid. The games were great for the early 80’s but I knew immediately that this Amico was not something I’d be interested in. Over the past 20 years I’ve owned several retro game packs of old arcade and Intellivision hits. I would buy these out of nostalgia and the result was always the same. I’d be entertained for about an hour and then I’d eject the disk and it would sit on my shelf never to be touched again. The simplicity of those kind of games just didn’t hold my interest anymore. So why would I spend hundreds of dollars to invest in a console that retreads the same concepts with almost none of the features that we’ve come to appreciate in current day gaming? No way was I going to order that.

    I remember buying an Atari 2600 Jr. with tons of games a few years back it was great at first but barely got any use onwards when I had to downsize my collection it was the first on the chopping block. Your right the games from that generation don't translate well for 2022 and i think that's what would make the Amico a mediocre system that if it does get released will see small sales and then a year or two down the road quietly get its plug pulled like the Ouya.

    It's bizarre to me. Instead of trying to develop a whole new platform, just get an off the shelf SOC, slap Linux on it, add a programming library, and stuff a simulator of their old platform to make the old games playable. Charge a nominal fee for access to the old games, encourage development by independent coders, open the system up, share profits with developers, and lock the system down (a bit) to prevent piracy. I could do this for $100K in less than a year. It should be cheap to do.

    @@tymmezinni Yeah but we're also talking about a console that existed before the crash of '83. The world of gaming is very clearly delineated between the time before and the time after the crash. What gaming had become by say '85-'87 was a very different world than existed in the late seventies and early 80s. And I would definitely say that about gaming now. It's a completely different world now than it was in the early 2000s. Would say most of those changes are not particularly great. Some really cool stuff has happened but it came with some inherently awful stuff as well. And the entire culture of gaming is shifting constantly and it rarely shifts back into things that were popular decades ago. Things like mini consoles can still succeed but an entirely separate console that exists with out the assistance of the big three or something like an app store is pretty unlikely.

    Tommy unfortunately found out the hard way that composing video game music is not at all the same as actually making games, never mind gaming hardware. His experience in creating game soundtracks (credit where credit is due, his resume in this area is impressive) means absolutely bupkis when it comes to putting together a game console and games.

  • @atm94404

    @atm94404

    2 жыл бұрын

    The thing is, the closer you look at Tommy's credits, the less impressive they become. Tommy's most recent claim to fame was the "oof" sound, but we know that was done by someone else. Tommy credited that someone else UNTIL the sound became a meme. Once it did, then Tommy said "that was mine". If you look at the vast majority of credits he claims for his (purchased) Guinness Book record of "most videogame credits", you'll see they're for a licensed collection of generic sound effects that his studio put out with very little of that collection being Tommy's exclusive work. There's likely other people with even more credits for using licensed software (like any number of compression libraries or video codecs) under the record's loose criteria that could claim that title- if they bothered to pay Guinness for a vanity award. Then there's the constant claiming "Tommy did the sound for Metroid Prime" which has been thoroughly debunked, or his claim for the first use of a sampled guitar in a videogame (again completely debunked). When you get to his "real" achievements in game soundtracks, you should ask the question "what would you say Tommy actually did". Most of his Sega CD soundtracks were for titles for which music already existed either from a movie license or a cartridge version (that Tommy didn't write). When interviewed about his Terminator Sega CD soundtrack, Tommy let slip that he did not know how to read or write music. He brushed that off with "I can just hire some guy to do that for me". Well if you can't read or write music, how do you take a piece of music that he plays (by ear) and orchestrate that for other instruments (that Tommy doesn't play)? He can't. He has to hand it to some "paid flunky" who DID bother to go to college and learn music theory, and tell that person "do all the other parts and leave a spot for me to improvise some sick guitar riffs". For the Amico, Tommy claimed that he did all the music and sound design for all the titles, but then a developer let slip on his Twitter feed that they (not Tommy) had done music and sound for at least one title. We've seen in 2020/21 Tommy was (under)paying college students to make games (hence all the stolen assets), so is it hard to think at the start of his career Tommy was passing the bulk of his work to some uncredited kid (drowning in student loan debt) desperate to break into the biz? And it's not like this is unheard of. Steve Jobs (in)famously conned Atari into thinking he was an engineer, but "sub-contracted" his assignments to Steve Wozniak. And in Tommy's mind he would see that as "I'm just like Steve Jobs. Cool!" The one thing we know for sure that Tommy is good at is selling is Tommy, but once you dig deeper you might (like J Allard did) realize that's only of value to Tommy and doesn't contribute to the success of anything other than Tommy's image.

  • @WhitePointerGaming

    @@atm94404 Yeah, there's that too. Someone on reddit pointed out that he lists each individual platform the game is released on as a separate game. So he lists Tony Hawk's Pro Skater four times, Pac-Man World Rally five times, The Incredibles and The Incredibles: Rise of the Underminer five times each, Earthworm Jim ten times. I guess you could easily get to 300 games on your resume if that's the case. In some cases, like THPS, the game has a licensed soundtrack, so he only provided a sound effect or two and is barely worth a mention.

    I think he got blinded by his own sense of nostalgia and couldn't foresee that people's needs change with time. What was 100% appealing 40 years ago can be 100% impractical today. Even if the Amico had hit the market with a thousand games it'd still be an uninteresting product, seeing as how anyone could have way more fun playing PC titles from 20 years ago.

    This has been the age of scam and fly-by-night consoles. Maybe one day, someone will write a book about it, and many of us will buy the book, read it, and laugh at the memory of this bizarre time period. I'm not surprised that this one crashed and burned. The one that I'm hoping for is the KFConsole. It is so absurd that I hope it actually exists one day, but sadly, I doubt it will ever come to fruition. I guess I'll have to find another way to keep my greasy chicken warm. I wonder what might be next. It would be hard to top the KFConsole for utter weirdness, but there are plenty of forgotten ancient consoles and computer systems that could provide inspiration for a junky console that will never be released. How about a new Magnavox Odyssey that is inferior to the original one? I'm sure that would sell. Or maybe bring back the Timex Sinclair and shine it up a bit. For a dual-use device like the KFConsole, here is an idea - the Bong Console - a third-rate game console with a built-in bong so that you can wallow in weed so much that you don't care that the games are crap. For those who don't like weed, the Keg Console might be a better choice. It would have an attached keg with a tap in a convenient location. You could fill it with cheap booze or Mountain Dew, so you wouldn't have to get up from your game to get a drink. Combine that with a KFConsole, and gamers would never have to move from the gaming chair again. Finally, all of these crazy consoles will have to feature NFTs because block chain is the wave of the future, and we will all learn to love NFTs whether we want to or not.

    My guess as to why Tommy stuck with the product, and why he wouldn't listen to reason, can be explained with his success with Video Games Live. He has said when he started it no one believed in the idea, and that probably carried over to the Amico I'm sure. I don't think he started it off as a scam, but he was in far too deep to just accept that it wasn't going to work out, having success as big as VGL and going to a failure as big as this was probably something he didn't want to accept/let happen.

    I think they could have been successful if they just remastered, reimagined, and cloned popular retro games and made them to work on modern consoles with modern controllers. They could have released new games on the big 3 and steam. The console and controller were going to be a major financial drain, and they would only need a studio to make the games and not needed all of the staff and space.
