It is truly a superior work of art with the combination of film site selection, music selection, and conveying the tremendous impact of the Dixie fire aftermath on nature and people. I surely didn't have time for a 1 hour video tonight, but I could not tear myself away. This is a superb video, suitable for the 'BNSF Annual Shareholders Meeting' I should think. The first location is a very sad sight. The fire destroyed a huge area there. The devastation is best visible from the air. The trains are pretty cool, it's always good to see as they struggle climbing the serious grades. This video was worth the wait, it's one of your best Dan. Thank you for the long movie.

It's crazy how long the Dixie Fire burned and you really do get a sense of that with how many locations are completely torched. I love watching them power up the steeper grades and was happy to catch quite a bit of that from the ground for the audio.

You absolutely crushed it again! I watched a few bits and pieces, and look forward to enjoying this on my living room couch with a beer and chips handy.

WOW, Dan, this was a great movie and well worth the wait to see it! The devastation around the Hollenbeck Loop from the Dixie fire in 2021 was terrible. However, it is nice to see that a year later there is green on the ground. It was fantastic to see the trains snake around the various curves when you showed some long-range views of the trains moving through the hills. This is one of your best productions. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to view and enjoy it.

Thank you Dawn!!! There was a lot of planning and also a couple ridiculous wait times on some of the trains that I wouldn't usually want to admit! The first day on the 16th I waited in Klamath Falls on the first train to get moving for about 8 hours... Then the second day there was a similar wait time in the middle of the day between trains... I was worth it in the end but that is not something I do very often for many places I visit!

One of your best releases. I've enjoyed all your videos but this one is my favorite. Thank you from Wisconsin for bringing us the railroads of the Northwest.

I have wanted to capture certain parts of this line for years very badly which I finally accomplished last year which I've got a couple other videos up of but I had the best overall coverage of the entire line during this trip and was interested in capturing the landscapes that had burned from the fire.

Thanks a lot! I am glad you enjoyed it so much. It was really crazy to first see some of those burn locations from the Dixie fire because I have seen many of them just the year before when it was still thick green forests. It changed the entire tone of some locations.

Beautiful with perfect music, as always. I was sad to see the devastation of the forest fires. The dawn/dusk shots were just wonderful! I'm always thankful to see and hear all this beauty, even the starkness of the burned trees, which hold their own kind of beauty and hope. Great footage from my "neighborhood"! Incidentally, it is the Hollenbeck "Loops". Northbound, the first loop goes through the tunnel, crosses the highway and continues up the hill into the second loop. Back up there around the corner is also a daylighted tunnel and an abandoned tunnel. I walked this stretch once about 40 years ago, but the fire has opened up the terrain. If you get down this way again and the drone can go that far, you should check them out!

I'm not sure why it seems like much of the railfan community has a hard time finding me and has a similar reaction as you once they do. I am obsessed with the Inside Gateway and this video was a massive achievement. If you look through my channel you'll find another good one of the same spots on the Gateway with some very rare UP detours. Very happy to have captured those as well!

I love being out doing the filming but sometimes it takes motivation to sit at the computer for hours doing the editing. That part isn't my favorite but the end result is always satisfying. Since you mention MRL I can tease for you that I was just back there again last month for about 4 days and shot quite a bit. Should be 4 videos worth and thd first of those uploads will be a week from now tomorrow. It is exciting because it was basically all snow covered everywhere I captured trains! I am sure you will enjoy it.

I enjoyed the wave from the engineer too! I'm sure some of those crew members were extremely surprised to see a railfan way out there in the middle of no where because it really is rare or anyone to capture trains in places out there. I do have some friends and acquaintances that are engineers and conductors and on occasion I capture them at the helm which is good fun.

The SB "grain train," judging by the number of ADM hoppers, is most likely soybean meal from the Midwest that will be mixed with grain to make livestock feed, most likely poultry feed for operations located in California's Central Valley.

Yes that is exactly right actually. I asked a BNSF buddy about that specific train and he told me it was feed for California. I thought about labeling it as that but I decided it was easier to keep it simple just saying grain train. The railroad still labels it as a G train too.

Of all the Trains/crews you show do any of them show interest in knowing they are part of your videos and do you know if any of them watch also do you get any comments from any of them? I also enjoy some of your cameos with the drone and also would at least interesting to me to get clips of you doing what you do. Once in a while but it's rare unless I know them personally which I do know some that I get the pleasure to film and chase once in a while. Yeah I try to keep myself out of the camera view as much as I can but sometimes it's not possible and I know many like when they are able to find me. Was this former GN rather than WP? When I got a cab ride from Keddie north on the WP in 1969 the crew & power changed at Bieber, CA from WP F units to GN FA ALCo units. I was tired so got off too and stayed over night in the RR hotel in Bieber as a part of the very gracious WP crew. Then back south to Keddie to catch the Cal Z. Thanks WP crews! I had just returned from serving my time in Vietnam in 1968 and was glad to see snow that came up to the cab floor level. Wow! Thanks for sharing Dan!

Wow that's very cool what an experience! What you saw is exactly what it is. It was WP on the Feather River Route from Keddie to Bieber and then North of Bieber it was GN. Thank you for your service as well!

Thanks so much Steven I put a lot of effort into this one! This line was originally built by the Great Northern and Western Pacific in an effort to compete with SP's North/ South Shasta route. The Western Pacific called it their Northern California Extension. The Great Northern built the line from Klamath Falls to Bieber and the Western Pacific built their section from Keddie to Bieber. This had to be one of, if not the very last, thru mainline routes completed in the US which was opened for traffic in 1931.

Magnificent landscapes, despite all these charred forests... The pourcentages of the slope of the track, is it in miles or in kilometres ? Have a good year, greetings from Switzerland

Dude you don't know how bad I've wanted to see footage of that portion of the inside gateway. I've wondered for years if they had continued the signal project south from k-falls to Keddy, and it looks likely they had. Oh btw, is the north portion still being ran with gapped rail or have they upgraded that portion to ribbon rail yet? Also, the signals at the diamond to the Modoc line didn't look like a traditional UP signal. I'm curious if that line is still in regular through service, or is it only a spur now days? I thought I heard that they had it shut down for a period of time, but then brought it back up for rerouting purposes, but that's all I can vaguely remember, if that lol. Thanks again for doing that trip and recording those vast and baron reaches of the line for all to see! Excellent job!

You and I are the same Mike! Up until last year I had been way too obsessed with visiting the part of the line between Bieber and Halls Flat. I believe the whole line has now been upgraded to ribbon rail as I captured some other spots last year in some earlier videos I will link to you below because I think you will love those too if you liked this! The Modoc Line is still alive because of the Goose Lake Railway in Lakeview OR which services Lakeview and last I knew ran once a week to Alturas to interchange with the UP who also runs there from Klamath Falls. On Saturday the Goose Lake runs from Lakeview to Alturas while the UP runs from Klamath to Alturas. Then on Sunday they return to their respective origin points. It was my pleasure to spend the time out there to capture all this! Oh yeah you will! Now I know who to contact for inside info! 😉 Ha just kidding. Well seriously I wish you well. I have a buddy who has worked Klamath on and off and I can give you one warning... I wish you the best of luck if you ever get an Almanor dog catch, which actually did happen to one of the trains in this video. A Southbound crew dies at Almanor and leaves the train. Then later a new dog catch crew is sent out of Klamath in a van all the way to Almanor to get on and run the train the short distance to Keddie only to get back in the van and be taken all the way back to Klamath in one shot... So basically 8 hours in the van just to run a train 25 miles. At least I think they still do it this way. The trade off being a nice big money maker though.

@@jakehixon1073 I believe my buddy told me running the Gateway Sub is the 2nd or 3rd highest paid run on the whole system. I guess 202 miles would do that.

Great video... Tremendous drone work. It is sad to see all the fire damage. It could easily have been mitigated and even prevented by smart "forest management". But environmentalists do not want anyone in the forests like loggers or forest managers. They want the forests only for themselves. And we see the devastating results.

Just a fun fact. The Dixie fire was started by PG&E and allowed to burn in an effort to fill the reservoirs. They (PG&E) didn't like competing with all those thirsty trees for the water and felt it had no other options. What a shame.
