SP&S Oregon Trunk (4K) | Deschutes River Canyon | Summer 2020 | BNSF Trains | DJI Inspire 2

Presenting a production of one of my favorite pieces of railroad:
This is the SP&S Oregon Trunk in Modern day 2020!
The majority of the Oregon Trunk was built by the SP&S and is now operated by the BNSF. This short movie covers the North end of the Oregon Trunk along the Deschutes River Canyon, Trout Creek Canyon and more. Specific locations in this video include Tunnel 1, Sinamox, Oakbrook, Tunnel 2, Cambrai, Trout Creek Trestle, and Paxton.
This production was filmed over three different days during the summer with the third day actually being the busiest day of rail traffic I've ever witnessed in person topping out at a whopping four trains during the daylight hours. The Oregon Trunk is generally a pretty slow route. To see three trains in the Deschutes River Canyon during the daylight is considered a good day.
The ruggedness and depth of the Deschutes River Canyon is quite spectacular. There's something special about capturing trains within its walls.
These scenes were filmed with the professional DJI Inspire 2 drone.
Music is used from Soundstripe

    My father in law worked for the SP&S and Burlington Northern as an engineer out of wishram and use to tell me stories about this run to Bend Oregon. He's gone now but he would have loved seeing this from the air with the big locomotives. He always wanted to get in one but never got the chance he retired in 1977. Thanks for the aireal memory lane.

    Some real terrain on the Oregon Trunk. Following the Deschuttes River and bordering the Warm Springs Reservation makes this area a good challenge. I hopped this line as a kid and to this day remains in my top 5 most scenic lines.

    What also amazes me, is although the railroad may travel 32 miles between the Columbia and Beaver Tail, the surface roads are what 75 miles? With at least 10 is washboard gravel roadway! Nice work!

  • @TheRailfanDan

    @TheRailfanDan

    3 жыл бұрын

    Correct! It's about 60 miles on the road but that first train from tunnel 2 to Beavertail I was hightailing it pretty quick to make it from one place to the other. Once I arrived at Beavertail it was only 5 minutes later that the baretable train came around that corner.

    I bet the original 4K file is really something to see. The file size reduction and compression needed for a KZread video probably diminishes 4K video quality significantly. When I view these at full screen size, the image looses lots of sharpness and detail. I've had still photography as a serious hobby for more than 60 years so I'm very aware of sharpness in the final image. Nevertheless, your videos are among the very best. I especially enjoy your composition of the scene. The DJI's "rock solid" stability and your thoughtful panning produces excellent views. You have a very good talent and skill that produces a product that we certainly enjoy watching .
