The INSANE Helicopter Turbine Powered Racecar - The Ultra Rare Howmet TX
In this Rare Cars documentary, we go in depth into the deep and sporadic history of the 1968 Howmet TX, the first successful turbine powered racecar. While there were other turbine cars before, the Howmet TX was the first turbine racecar to actually win a competitive race against other cars.
This is the first Rare Cars documentary so if you enjoyed it, please make sure to subscribe to the channel because we have more documentaries just like this one coming out on history’s most interesting cars like the GT40, Porsche 907, Ferrari P4 and oh so many more!

Interesting subject with some great information, unfortunately it is almost impossible to watch/listen to the video. Get rid of the white and red captions and slow down your voice over, you are talking way too fast. And get rid of that terrible music! It sounds like the background music from a video about mystic gems or other BS. If this was just the voiceover, but slower, and no caption and crazy music this would be a really good video.

Picture froze at 5:31 and the narration continued on without change. I was hoping to see photos of the final open-topped roadster they used for a speed record attempt. I agree re: the music.
The "music" in the background drowns out the narration.
I saw one of these cars at a trackday at Gateway Intl(St Louis) in 2003. It was a half car, half bike day. Saw it first going through tech with the doors and hatch open. He was only on the throttle for about 1/2 the track. He practically coasted through most of the corners. It had 1999 Goodwood stickers on it. #140. And was painted with #76 on the rear quarters.
The Howmet TX was the only turbine powered racecar that actually managed to address the issues of 'surge' & 'lag' which had always been the problem with turbines. The wastegate system they developed was truly trick and worked! So drivers didnt have to decrease amd increase revs very, very slowly and stand on the brakes and gas together, anymore, and let them concentrate on winning rather than nursing recalcitrant jet turbines. Good factual video. Shame about the freeze, but these things do happen.
Front page of KZread moment, loved this video can wait to watch this channel blow up. Btw just a tip, I’d consider lowering the music volume a little, and maybe try speaking a little slower

I saw the car when it raced at Sebring, but not where you would expect to see it only 10 minutes before the start. It was on the midway just east of the pits walkover bridge. What I liked most about this car was the sound it made coming out of the Hairpin, it sounded like a jet taking off.

Super vid! Like that U mentioned the Rover- BRM car. The turbine got a raw deal but hey. Many thanx 👍👍
…. Great information! Thanks for the content
I recall seeing this start up and do a demo run. Lots of people were standing close behind with no hearing protection. I knew what was coming having worked on gas turbines so my son and I put our ear defenders on and stood well back. 10 secs after it started we were the only ones there : ). I recall this car and all the parts were sold a couple or years ago, The price seemed reasonable around $150,000 (I could be wrong) but I suspect that price reflected how few times you would be able to drive it. They started it on wheel lifts and let the wheels spin up as it had no clutch.
The world must be running out of Mk1 Cortina tailights. So many Sports and custom cars have used them.
5:27 the video is broken for me, only the audio plays
Glad you've made some editing changes since this. Love the music but it distracted me!
Surely I can't be the only one here who thinks the narrator is sharing the room with a bomb disposal team on an urgent mission.
Great channel! New subscriber.
some one else may have already commented, but there are also a couple of GoKarts with fully functional turbines in them, electrics and all... I know one was built by a ...jet engineer, so kinda a no brainer. but anyway really nice Car , great job enjoyed seeing it.
how do i turn off the subtitles?
BRM built gas turbine cars for Le Mans, and there was a gas turbine car raced at Indy too...

Thank you for referencing the new videos in comparison to this one. I might remake this one now that you say that, that's not a bad idea!
I was at Brands Hatch the day that the Howmet hit the bank at the Druids hairpin with former F1 world champion, Phil Hill, at the wheel. It wasn't just a scrape but an almighty thump that could be felt through the ground 15 ft away!
fun fact. americans DO use the metric system, they just have it rearranged in imperial measurements, but those measurements are all based on metric now.
It would be nice to hear what the car sounds like too
If you have any plans to make an article on The legendary Chapparal and Jim Halls innovative sport cars I’ll drop everything and watch religiously.
When I was 9 or 10 , 68/69 I was lucky enough to watch the union 76 version race at Sebring . It was fast, sounded like a jet and drank kerosene like it was going out of style, witch in turn lead to many pit stop's. Unfortunately didn't finish the race, can't recall why. any body know?
The subtitles are a bit distracting and the background music is a little overbearing but other than that I loved the video. Very good info all around.
The red colored transcription words are an unnecessary distraction in an otherwise nice video. Also the music could be turned down by a few dBs. Also we didn't get to hear the beast in action😶
Just imagine they had made a road legal Howmet!!
Very cool car and one I've never actually heard of. Thanks for that. Video froze like 6 minutes in. Audio still played. Didn't seem like a KZread issue. Might want to check it out. Could be your editor. Like others said, just slow er down. Good job other than that!
Engine sounded like a bloke talking with backing drone music for ten minutes!🥴
Did the car ever make it to the UK? Recall seeing a Howmett race at Oulton Park in Cheshire way back. Did a few laps and retired due to an electrical fault. In those days at the smaller tracks, you could wander around the pits easily.
This guy talks like I read..fast as hell. Although I suspect it's not popular. Great video I understand and like it. Ah man it froze.

NO RUNNING ENGINE SOUND IN THIS VIDEO
Wanna say I saw these cars used in George Lucas’ movie THX 1138. Towards the end of the movie, the “police cars” are stolen to make an escape.
Familiar with Mr. Jim Hall’s turbine cars from Midland Tx. But not these. Interesting.
background music is way too loud
I’d love to watch this but I can’t. The cations drive me nuts.
It reminds me of the Chaparral 2D based on the body looks
What kind of fuel did it use ?
If you put your thumbs across the bottom of the video, it's great.....
I sat in that car when the owner was in Pennsylvania
Would have been nice to have been able to hear it.
i wonder how the vehicle felt to use, like how fast did the turbine deliver power at lower ranges (i've seen power delivery graphs for the Turbines on the M1 Abrams but it's a heavier vehicle and with greater ground pressure than a race car on slower speed) criticism for the style of the video, BGM is a tad bit louder than the narrator, the subtitles are quite annoying with the red highlight constantly moving word-to-word being the most contributor of the nuisance along with the length of the subtitles being too short for the eyes to follow in transitions, taking focus from the footage, narration is a bit too fast. all-in-all, alot of stuff could be improved considering this is a new channel, hopefully things could get better as obscure vehicles are quite interesting to uncover.
cortina rear lights?
why is the music so loud
I really liked the video until it froze at 5:25 and only the audio resumed. And what's up with the singalong subtitles???...KZread has its own subtitles/closed captioning. Otherwise, great informative video!
I switched off coz of the sub titled 😢🏴

This is not a complaint, it's a observation of how you delivery, your talking to fast and your not giving us technical information about the subject "graphically or video graphically " more depth and slower we want the technical information. But overall the show is good.
Nic e vid, but the lyrics are missing the little bouncing ball.... Haha. Nah but those hard coded subs with the highlighted spoken word is super offputting and annoying though.

What is with the distraction back ground music. You don't need it.
Cool subject, but the music bed is way too loud.
You need a warning about your subtitles for people subject to seizures from flashing lights.
Nice vid but dont do allcaps for subs. Its generally harder to read
are subtitles and music some kind of hypnosis? Lol
🫤Car Sound?
nice karaoke captions! 😂
I wonder what it sounds like ?
This is a surprisingly good video, crammed fully of interesting technical. But why have you sabotaged it with enough distraction to trigger an epileptic fit? 😂 and can you try to narrate it like your reading a story book rather than reciting the small print for terms and conditions on the back of a life insurance contract? Takes a little practice but I think your voice will carry well and hold audience attention far better than this dreadful patter to the finishing line.
You are just reading the Wikipedia article - without giving it credit!

Negative! I read like 15 articles on this but next time I’ll cite them all in the description for the audience to read from 👍
i remember seeing 1 of these Howmet TX sitting in a warehouse in Santa Paula, CA. minus an engine. Pretty cool. I always thought what a shame that it sitting half derelict in some bat infested warehouse in the middle of nowhere. Glad they have been resurrected.
I was interested and tried to listen but for whatever reason, there's some weird new-age 'sound' constantly playing.... louder than the narration. It sounds like what I imagine they play in the background at a day spa that give enemas. It does NOT make me think cars, motorsports etc.... very strange choice.
Perhaps slow the narrative a tad ?
