Great fight I miss those days of boxing

A lot of people say this fight was a robbery but a close fight can never be a robbery. Both men put on career defining performances.

Yeah it burned my ass a long time ago when I saw that ref give Oscar that break after he went down and it burns my ass to see it today! This ref should have never referred again after this fight!

I didn't think it was that bad or that it really affected anything. I think he was warning Ike that "when I say break you break" but it was definitely curious. Oscar was the money man and he very smoothly used his authority to give him an extra few seconds. But again I don't think it really changed anything. Mitch was the 2nd best ref in the world at the time, after Mills Lane. Then he killed himself. Makes you wonder if there was some crazy mob or gambling shit involved. Maybe the suicide wasn't even that. just staged by some guy like Culotta.

Quartet's jab is incredible, he definitely won that round with his jab alone, constantly in delahiyas face

They dropped each other with the same punch thrown to each other, pretty legit

Quartey won that round. His left hook was so short, I didn't even see it. Brilliant boxer. He has a kind of Mayweather style without turning quite so side on. But he had a great punch.

I thought Quartey won this fight. They went with the big name.

The referee was protecting De Lahoya ! He broke Quartey's rhythm. He should have been warning Oscar about holding.

Quartey won this fight it got a little close mostly because of the end of the fight but before then quartey was ahead pretty convincingly, the judges absolutely screwed him on this one.

Mitch Halpern was a great ref. He made the call to not stop Ike in the 12th where others would have. The break in time was a little premature..

lowkey always thought Ike should’ve gotten the decision.

Not many men outjabbed Oscar. Quartey did that night. Great fight. Of course the money man got the nod..just like against Whitaker (awful scoring in that one). It was only poetic justice that Oscar didn't later on against Trinidad and mosely.

It's because these men are also Americans so the Judges cannot discriminate and these 2 boxers are superstars in their own right.

Give Oacar credit. He alway came back hard after taking a good shot.

Ike was better

I have never seen dela hiya been humbled like that. Ike was just a delight to watch even when he is losing.

I remember watching this and just getting more frustrated round after round after it was clear the fix was in. The Golden Boy got a lot of biased decisions, from subtle chicanery like ref involvement to blatant stuff like ridiculous judge scoring. I stopped watching boxing during this time because the fight results often had so little to do with the actual boxing performances. Might've been corruption, incompetence, some of both. Either way, more frustrating than fun to watch.

The warning atoppage to Quartey is a 50/50 call. I wouldn't have called time with a warning there. Separate the fighters and remind Quartey to keep it clean without stopping the action. Other refs might have done the same as Halpern did though to not let it get out of hand.

Ike Quqrtey is a beast him and Larry Holmes have the best jab I’ve seen

Quartey, one of Ghana's best boxers but for pride and arrogance

Ike quartey is just a victim of discriminatory judging just because he's from Ghana , if you count the jabs he landed, it's clear that he outjab the man whose best weapon is the jab. If he was an American fighter he could have won the fight.

I watched the fight in real time when it happened. Oscar won clearly. He knocked down ike twice. And ike knocked down de la Hoya once. And before. In between and after.... everything was a draw. So I guess de la Hoya had the advantage of knocking quartey down twice in the fight. So why shouldn't Oscar be the winner ? He won . Period. Move on

Oscar scored 2 knockdowns, Quartey scored 1. Oscar beat Quartey silly in the 12th. Quartey never hurt Oscar like that. Oscar impressed the judges more. Quartey had his chance to hurt Oscar but couldn't do it.

the warning was for hitting after / during the break and making contact with the ref during such which could had been much worse as the ref could had deducted a point or DQ.

If that unreliable referee would have not gave like that long warning Oscar would have been knocked out

That fight was stolen. Quartey clearly won that fight.
