Really? A country which is a pawn of the NATO. A country which is the lap dog of America. A country with politicians with NO backbones, who are doing anything the EU wants. A country where nobody can say or have any Dutch cultural events without being called "racist". A country where feminism and LGBT-love are out of control. A country with a king/queen while we don't need them. A country with no pride of people, only for money and the elites. Just me The "issues" you described is also present in every western developed countries. Even Britain, the more conservative of the western european countries, is going through the same phenomenons. Netherlands still is a beautiful country though. One of highest standards of living. Wonderful Healthcare, wonderful prison system, and wonderful everything. These are the results of a liberal society. America is much more conservative, and guess what? We got absolute shit Healthcare, worse prison system in the world, and one of the highest income inequality in developed world.

Happy inaugural ceremony to His Royal Majesty King Willem Alexander and Queen Maxima, and all members of the Netherlands kingdom.

I was introduced to the then Queen of the Netherlands Wilhelmina by Anne Frank, who wrote lovingly of the Dutch people and their remarkable queen. I am filled with amazement when I consider the heroic courage the Dutch people showed in the face of the terrible repression visited upon them during the terrible years of the great war. I am always delighted in the simple declaration on the part of the Queen Regent Emma when the young Queen Wilhelmina asked "Mama, do all the people belong to me?", "No, my child, it is you who belong to all these people." Simply put. It has been the rule by which this incredible set of people (Wilhelmina, Juliana, Breatrix, and now Willem-Alexander) have conducted themselves for well over a century.

Ax Martel I understand that the queen did fled Netherlands... I would do the same actually. Netherland at the time had colonies still under the command of the exiled government. Idk, the Danish king was brave though, he stayed despite occupation and rallied his people through hard times.

yes, but The Netherlands was actually attacked, one of our biggest cities had been flattened completely. I believe the Danish invasion took what? 1, maybe 2 days, without terribly many casualties. so you can immagine that the our Royal family had more reason to be concerned about their own safety then the Danish Royal family

The Danish literally opened the gates at the border, they chose (wisely) not to fight any longer after 6 hours seeing they stood no chance, not a single shot's been fired during the overtake of Denmark by the Germans, some say. ;) The Dutch Royal family and government was offered a same treatment/deal prior to the invasion but both refused. The Danish Royals therefore didn't had much to fear really, the Belgian King however didn't flee either but did risk a lot seeing how the Belgians (and the French) behaved during the interbellum in the by both countries occupied Ruhr-area in western Germany. Bringing your head of State in safety during wartime is a very common and wise thing to do, partly so they can stay in 'power', partly because the Kingdom is bigger then the occupied part of it, and partly to secure the bloodline of the dynasty. Furthermore; what also contributed to their decision to flee was the fact that our Royal family had a certain German bloke in it's midst, a young Prince listening to the name Bernhard. The nazi's didn't really care for him very much and saw him as a traitor. Pretty f-ing good reason the get your ass out of nazi-reach I'd say.

It's insane that 1 million people showed up in 1 single city, not counting celebrations in other places, , of a country that only has 17million in total

Snicklefritz1979, Inauguration ceremonies are not just for republics. A Inauguration is when the head of state is sworn in by oath, a Coronation is when they are crowned. The Dutch Monarchy does have it's own regalia but is it just to symbolize the Monarchy, no Dutch Monarch has ever been crowned instead they have all been Inaugurated. :)

This looks to me more like what the British would call the State Opening of Parliament and the Address from the Throne, which are parliamentary and governmental ceremonies. So would it be appropriate to call it more the inauguration of Parliament, than the King's inauguration?

BigBen Hebdomadarius No. The Speech from the Throne is given on Prinsesdag, the third thursday of September. The Dutch monarchs are not crownec and anointed, instead they take an oath to uphold the constitution and each member of the States-General is called to swear or affirm allegiance. A new monarch is a state and government ceremony. There is no need for the church, after all merely a private body not followed by most, to assume the right to authenticatd the ruler.

All the people standing up and saying things is them swearing fealty to the king. They either say "I swear it god almighty" if they are religious or more traditional or "i promise" if they are not religious or more modern.

Exactly. It's not Holland, it's "The Netherlands". Fun fact, New York was actual founded by the Dutch as New Amsterdam. Harlem is named after Haarlem, a major Dutch city at the time. Just looking into the history of NY is amazing to learn about Dutch infuence into the US

The Dutch King is also descendant of our own long dead Queen Victoria. She married some of her children off to some European royalty hence that is why she is called the Mother of Europe then Grandmother of Europe. Most of the royal European families did descended from the second longest serving British monarch, Queen Victoria. Now, our Queen is still our monarch at just 92 years old and still strong. I wonder what Prince Charles of Wales had been thinking, hurry up mother, I want to be King, lol!

King William I abdicated in 1840, Queen Wilhelmina abdicated in 1948, Queen Juliana abdicated in 1980 and Queen Beatrix abdicated in 2013. The first more or less forced due to his plan to get married with a Belgian catholic countess, but the 3 queens out of their free will.

@@pacoramirez7363 Dutch may be a European language but it's in no way spoken as diversly as others like Frensh or German, so we dutch aren't bothered with the fact that our language isn't all well know outside of Dutch speaking regions :)

The King became King at the moment the previous abdicated and signed the abdication law. The King has to appear before the Staten General (united chambers of parliament) and the Staten of the other countries within the kingdom. There the King has to swear loyalty to the Constitution, the Statue of the Kingdom, the Nations within the Kingdom and to protect its realm. The governments of the countries are also present. After this, all Staten (members of the parliaments) have to swear or promise loyalty to the same. This ia done individually, so each one has to stand up and speak out. This is what you are referring to. So no voting but a mutual promise of loyalty.

Yongle96 Well, I'm not sure how to explain in English because I don't know many of the English translations of what these people represent. I'm pretty sure there are better explanations in the comments but they are in fact not voting. During the king's inauguration he promises loyalty to our constitution and to serve his purpose and his country. In return the Staten Generaal (Senate and House of representatives) the delegation from Sint Maarten, Aruba and Curaçao basically have to say that they will return the favor by protecting the King's inviolability and his rights as a king. They all have to swear this individually which is why their name is first called, they stand up and then say so truly help me, almighty God. I hope that explains it a bit. I'm sorry I can't do more. I'm not really into all these traditions so I only know what my history lessons have taught me

That I'm not entirely sure of but I believe it has to do with the fact that some aren't religious and out of principle don't want to promise on God but on themselves so some just say 'I promise' but that is not something I know for sure

Como traductor e intérprete profesional certificado y jurado, me permito aclarar que es fatal esa falsa traducción de «Así me ayude Diós [sic] todopoderoso». La frase implica una amenaza de castigo, igual que en inglés. Le dice una madre a su hijo «so help me if you do that», o sea «me la vas a pagar si haces eso». La traducción correcta de esa parte del juramento es «Lo juro, bajo pena de que Dios me castigue.» Nota aparte: Dios es una voz monosílaba y por lo tanto no lleva acento ortográfico.

I like how here the elected politicians from their Parliament are asked to each swear allegiance to the King, like if they were voting new laws or elect a new Speaker (like in the US). The few politicians who refused to do so (mostly from the left-wing) were then asked to move towards the back of the church.
