The Netherlands has a new King
www.euronews.com/ The new Dutch King Willem-Alexander has been sworn in at a ceremony in Amsterdam's Nieuwe Kerk.
Willem Alexander becomes the first king of the Netherlands in more than 120 years, ascending a throne largely stripped of political power but still invested with huge symbolic significance.
With his wife Queen Maxima by his side, the King took the oath of allegiance. Outside the church, a massive crowd had gathered to follow the ceremony on giant screens.
Like her mother and grandmother before her, Beatrix, who is 75, chose to abdicate after a 33-year reign, saying her son was ready and that it was time for the throne to be held by "a new generation".
Beatrix is a very popular Queen with an estimated 8 out of 10 Dutch people in favour of maintaining the monarchy.
The abdication takes place on Queen's Day, a national holiday in The Netherlands, giving the Dutch an opportunity to gather and celebrate in what are rather morose economic times with the country back in recession.
After her abdication, Queen Beatrix, the new King Willem-Alexander and his wife, Queen Maxima, appeared on the balcony of the Royal Palace in Amsterdam to an enthusiastic orange-clad crowd of well-wishers.
Nearly a million people are estimated to have converged on Amsterdam for the event, including more than 10,000 police officers deployed in a massive security operation.
The new King and Queen were joined by their three daughters, the eldest of whom, nine-year-old Catharina-Amalia, becomes Princess of Orange and heir to the throne.

such à happy normal looking Royal family. Their Queen abdicating in favour of her Son is how it should be no loving mother hangs on to stop her Son putting into. practice what hé has been learning since hé was à little boy !!!

He's given the Netherlands a great country to party in and the dance music scene is pretty good over there, and he has to be given some credit for creating a great atmosphere over there. I applied for king. but Willem Alexander's resume was slightly better. His resume (under ither details) it said "I crawled out of the queen's v****a" under other details..well...that is indeed an unique achievement....

I envy the Dutch People their charismatic splendid king and queen .Intelligent, loving ,happy family life,. Maximais always a pleasure to see a wardrobe that's Superbshe carries herself with elegence always a smile for everyone. We have the queen bless her. I hope she reigns for years and years to come. Charles and his wife NEVER . she is the shame of england and he for forcing her on us . The queen should never have allowed their marriage. Their situation was a hundred times worse .Than Edward and Wallis.there was no DIANA sorrow, of a ruined life between them.

I am not familiar with royal rules, but did not Chuck disqualify himself by marrying a divorcee? His uncle Edward had to step down..... I say let God decide, and if He does not, then let's have no more kings or empires. Ever.

GoatAmongSheep It was by convention not a strict rule, the church and the government put pressure on Edward VIII to abdicate but nowadays its tolerated by church and people (acceptance will come during future generations)

The Dutch monarchy is Calvinist (Dutch Reformed). As only God is truly King, earthly kings, out of respect and humility, do not wear a crown so as to keep them in their place. Nor is any Calvinist king annointed. They merely take sworn oaths. No crowns. Very little royal regalia. As a result they can usually abdicate and retire when the time is right. Catholic, Anglican, and Orthodox kings are both crowned and annointed. So typically they reign until they die; ie when God decides to take them.

So why wasn't he crowned in a coronation ceremony? I noticed the King of Spain was not crowned in coronation either. Ascension is okay, I guess, still a bit bland.

It's a long story but in a nutshell: 1. the King is not crowned because the power and continuity of the monarchy is ensured by the constitution and not by the King 2. crowning, the crown, the scepter and the orb are religious symbols, and in The Netherlands the King is not a religious leader (any more) 3. there is no authority that can crown the King I'm from The Netherlands and I did my research, have a good one (the words King and Queen are interchangable)

In most protestant monarchies, the king is the head of the Church. Queen Elizabeth II for example is head of the Anglican Church. The Dutch protestant church doesn't have a leader. Besides, half of the country is Catholic. So the King isn't a religious leader himself and there isn't an authority to coronate him. Hence, Dutch monarchs are sworn in.

The kings of Spain have never been crowned, they are proclaimed. The 'Crown' in Spain has always been a symbol.

León Del Campo Not even in earlier times? I find it odd. Because in the middle ages, the king is God's representative in the realm. As for Crown, I know in constitutional monarchies, the Crown has become a symbol of entity. But the physical crowns are still out there. Look at the British, they've got at least three state crowns specifically for the Sovereign.

Because he was inaugurated and not crowned. An inauguration is done by the state which doesn't use a crown while a formal crowning is something normally done by the church and do use a Crown. In our country it is the law to seperate state and religion, and since he was inaugurated by the state a religious object like a crown (while we do have one) isn't being used to make him king.

a coronation is a religious ceremony, and in this case there is only the political part of it that is used the Grondwet does not specify a coronation nor does any other bit of constitutional law in the Netherlands Je Maintiendrai!
