The Importance of In-Season Deer Scouting

No matter how much time you spend scouting in the off season, it doesn't always translate into a filled tag once season opens. If you aren't having the success you're after this deer season, take a break from hunting and get out there to do some in-season scouting. Look for the most recent sign you can find to put you back into the game and tip the odds of success in your favor!

Best advice you will ever hear. No bull, not selling anything, just plain talk. This guy is the real deal, he knows what he is talking about!

I am guilty of hanging and hoping too often. Last year I had a more mobile approach and had many encounters, but this year I've had less time to hunt and I've realized I am hoping too much. Time to get aggressive again!

I try to locate all the oaks with acorns weeks before season comes in. Then I can revisit these trees to see if acorns are dropping and determine if deer are using the area yet. By knowing where these oaks are before hand, I can slip in and check it out without walking around all over the place spreading excess scent for the deer to detect. Deer can smell where you have been 2 or 3 days later.

Quick question; when you are scouting around and you find clear and fresh evidence of activity - do you keep trailing/stalking or do you find a quiet place and wait for the deer to come back? Also, if you disturb an area where the deer have been foraging does your scent now spoil that spot? I used to stalk all day, definitely had more encounters. Then I built myself a very comfy hide and would just sit and hope - no more.

Sorry for the delayed response but I’ll give you my two cents and Brian may add his own. If I find fresh evidence of activity, I set up shop. I’m not big on going to the deer, rather, I prefer the come to me when archery hunting in particular. Even gun hunting can be tough because if you catch up to the deer you often alert them and they’re quickly on the move not offering a great shot. As for disturbing an area spoiling a spot, that’s really only a problem if you are there too often. As long as you’re not visiting the foraging area on the regular (a couple times or more per week), you shouldn’t have a problem. Good luck!

@@npinizzotto awesome, thanks for the tips. I'm heading back in Friday for the last weekend of the hunt. Been a quit season so far. Not much sign of bucks and we did not draw a doe tag this year. Curious to see what's on the trail cams.

Sorry for taking so long to reply. Nick was spot on with his response. When I find fresh abundant sign, I go ahead and set up as soon as possible and wait for the deer to return. If that doesn't produce in a hunt or two, then it's time to get back out and scout for better sign. And as Nick said, being in an area one time won't likely push the deer out of that spot, but repeated visits certainly can. Hope that helps, and good luck this season! - Brian Grossman
