The Impact of "Reach for the Stars" on the Sonic Franchise

What Happened to Endless Possiblility? ➤ • The History and Disapp...
"Reach for the Stars" from Sonic Colors is very much the child of Tomoya Ohtani. This being the case, it makes sense that it would serve as an easter egg in many outings, however the amount may surprise you! Let's look at the impact that this track has had on the franchise since the release of Sonic Colors!

Reach for the Stars definitely felt like a turning point for "Sonic" as a whole. I don't know how to describe it other than it just sums up Sonic as a character and hits differently than the traditional rock and grunge elements of the Crush40 era. Personally, this theme felt like Sonic's theme song for so long, but I think with Frontiers we're entering a new era. Nowadays, I think "I'm Here" will be the new theme for the Blue Blur.

I don't think I'm Here holds the same staying power. It was the main theme of the game yet it was outshined by the first boss song. Undefeatable is the most popular track of the game by a WIDE margin. Well all the titan themes outshined I'm Here actually
From what I remember, Reach for the Stars also shows up in Mario & Sonic Rio 2016 during the gymnastic event, is a music track in Smash Bros, and even showed up in Sonic Runners too
Sonic Colors DS along side Rush Adventure were my introduction to sonic. Reach for the stars is song in my heart i know by childhood.
The thing about "Wave Ocean - The Inlet" is that Reach for the Stars isn't heard right from the get go. It's during the guitar riff in the middle where you kinda hear a resemblance to it
Like you said, Ice Mountain references both Reach for the Stars and Cool Edge. Interestingly, Cool Edge's guitar is definitely similar, if not the same, as "Wave Ocean - the Inlet. All three themes are connected.
I love Reach for the Stars But it doesn’t matter will always be Sonic’s theme to me regardless of what version It’s just defines what I love about sonic as a character perfectly
I should mention that Reach for the Stars also appears in Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020. It is referenced in the main theme and running races, which is fitting. I also believe that Tomoya Ohtani composed for that game too, although I can't find anything online that proves this.
I go crazy when it comes to Sonic The Hedgehog. I'm a massive fan of the blue blue 🌀.
Reach for the Stars is a wonderful song that does a fantastic job expressing Sonic's character. I'm always happy to hear it.
Like I said on the video about “Endless Possibility”, the version from the 30th Anniversary Symphony is the best verison. In my opinion, obviously.
Wow I had no idea this song was so omnipresent

Tomoya Ohtani really loves this track, even just it’s melody, it’s almost like Sonic’s version of Totaka’s song at this point LOL
Reach for the stars was the best origonal Sonic song since the jump to the boost formula Endless Possibilities Is a close second
I definitely love this theme a lot since colors was the second sonic game I played and is one of, if not my favorite game. Btw it played during the Macy’s thanksgiving parade in 2021 as well

oh no way!!! That’s sick!! I didn’t know that! 😭
It doesn’t matter Version 1 is iconic, but I think it’s a little better in version 2
Wait there was a convention here in Vegas and a whole Sonic celebration was there?! Dammit if I knew, I would have been there....

LOL the Licensing Expo is for companies to show off what they’ve got coming up during the year and following year to get investors interested, influencers can pay to be in attendance as well A lot of the times what’s featured is hush-hush, but someone did film the drone show that SEGA held and it was pretty neat
re-colors ver. better imo (not the in-game version, but the symphony ver.)
i thought you also included the mario & sonic rio 2016 rearrange ver in Rhythmic Gymnastic. That thing was blast and rearrange by Tomoya Himself :(
I think Reach for the Stars has become the closest thing to the series main theme at this point. Green Hill Zone can't be used as often as Sega like because they don't own it, and while Live and Learn is iconic, it doesn't appear as often, just being unlockable in Generations and Frontiers and being the staple song in Super Smash Bros. Reach for the Stars has also been a mainstay in the music selection for both the Mario & Sonic Olympics and Super Smash Bros. series. For the latter, it's obvious because Smash for Sonic puts an emphasis on vocal themes rather than stage themes (I theorize this might be why Sonic's music selection isn't as large as series such as Mega Man. They may need to pay rights for vocalists. That being said, Sonic has one of the most diverse selections of 3rd party franchises, covering 16 games). On the other hand, Mario & Sonic is the opposite, focusing on instrumental stage themes. Smash has 11 vocal themes, with only 7 vocal themes, but way more instrumental music appearing as unlockables through the Mario & Sonic series: Super Sonic Racing (Sochi only) Escape from the City Sonic Heroes Right There, Ride On (prior to Rio, where by that time it seems Sega has some legal issues with Rush music, also disappearing in Smash and iTunes) Let the Speed Mend It New Venture Reach for the Stars The track also appears in Sochi for Sonic's Figure Skating Spectacular and Rio Wii U for Rhythmic Gymnastics
Once again another wonderful video! Hopefully you’ll make more Sonic music content in the future!

not gonna lie i never liked this song, i grew up with jason's era of sonic, so i was used to the heavy rock/metal. reach for the stars felt so safe and poppy, and as i was worried it was a turning point for the franchise, continuing in this new direction
"Colors is bad/mid" mfs when they realize they've been listening to the same track for over a decade straight: "EVEN IN MY GOAT FRONTIERS?!?!?" I must say though, hats off to Ohtani for being able to consistently make songs that capture Sonic's character, from Open your Heart all the way to I'm Here Revisited. Every one of them have a similar theme: Freedom. Throughout all that's changed about Sonic, whether it's the gameplay, the team behind it, his characterization, his tone, or even the media, one thing other than his speed his stayed. His high value for freedom, in his nature and his wishes for everyone around him. And in my opinion, I think his music does it the best.
"Endless Possibliity" Dude you spelled the title of the song wrong. Spelling error on the KZread thumbnail. And its also at the start of this video
