The Impact of Glassjaw

Ойын-сауық

Mr. Shiver I’m glad you sent a line.
I will discuss the band Glassjaw. I will talk about their early career to their present and how they influenced other bands. Although they didn’t have much commercial success, they are the most influential bands in the post-hardcore genre.

Loved glassjaw, their sound was so new york it was like the youth of today affiliated bands with a singer who could actually sing.

Worship and Tribute is Glassjaw's "Dark Side of the Moon." Experimental, moody, spacey, with perfect pacing and transitions between songs. Perfect album...still listen to it regularly 22 years later.

One major critique though, wouldn’t say GlassJAw is “incel” by any way as girls do like glassJAw as well and the lyrics aren’t about girls but just toxic exes. It’s just a lot of shit thrown at Daryl because “you can’t say that about a woman” but women say the same stuff about men and honestly I’d say it’s fair play both sides (plus “Her Middle Name Was Boom” isn’t hateful either, it’s about a close friend they appreciate who is a woman and who did stick by Daryl when he was in the hospital). And I think it’s harmful to label glassJAw negative stuff like that because I know I benefited from listening to their music as corny as it sounds their music helped me overcome my depression as I’ve been treated wrongly by women and people in general because of my appearance and mental disorders but having Daryl to look up to made me feel less alone and more like I can do something productive about it. I used to be big into emo but the frustration and relentless energy of EYEWTKAS is just a whole different level of what self-expression in music can be.

Seconding this. I'm a girl, but even listening to GJ as a teenager, I interpreted those lyrics in a 'not all women' way-but that's just me. His early songs regarding women are intense, but they're about toxic ex's and everyone has a right to self expression. Daryl (imo) likely aknowleged the 'problematic' lyrics because people are so quick to cancel things nowadays, and felt the need to 'own up' to his past self and lyrical choices because he knew a lot of people wouldn't view it in that light and write them off. Regardless of the reason, I have nothing but respect for GJ.

@@angel-spitt Ya the focus is def not about women. Its about toxic exes. Just because his ex was female doesn't mean he's sexist.

Im mid thirties from LI, and generally of the school of "old good, new bad" but glassjaws evolution over 3 decades is amazing. Material Control is a masterpiece. Love that recycled Sons of Abraham riff on Shira

2000s emo/post hardcore wouldn’t be what it became without glassjaw imo. their influence is undeniable and many bands were influenced by gj without even knowing. sometimes I even hear remnants of midwest emo in eyewtkas

Saw them 11/19/2002 @ St Andrews Detroit w/ Blood Brothers and American Nightmare. Had to sneak out cause i was grounded and it was a school night, but my older bandmate had a ticket and car so it was an easy choice. The sound was amazing for a hardcore show at the time, I can still remember the feeling of the bass and bass drum thumping in sync thru the speaker that was like 5 ft in front of me. IMO the albums (pre 2003) that seemed the most influential at the time were the 1st two LPs from Glassjaw, Poison the Well, Thursday, and Thrice + Norma Jean - Bless the Martyr / Killswitch Engage - Alive or Just Breathing, and obviously Refused

Glassjaw has the gift and the curse of being one of those “your favorite band’s, favorite band”. There’s no other band like Glassjaw. I hate defending the lyrical content of the first album because it indeed has aged poorly but what I will say, to me, it was an expression of misguided teenage rage. I’m not saying it’s right, but as a kid, when I was betrayed by a girl, I had all the hate in the world in my heart towards this one person and thought some hateful things in the moment. With age and wisdom you realize how dumb, hurtful and dangerous this thinking was. Again, not defending the lyrical content but as a dumb teenager once, I understand it.

"I only beat you when I am drunk; you're only pretty when you're cryin'" the lyrics were not misogynistic they just felt pressured to say so cause everyone now acts like a bunch fragile fucktards. They artistically shined a light on the tragedy of romance a darker twisted side of love too many find themselves trapped in, a tale of what not to do, what not to be. Everyone knew & respected that back then, today people are just so brainwashed & beaten by the censor that they to afraid to live & try to understand what it is to be human. Instead they Kowtow to a bunch of petty tyrants who get off on control & whom try to demonize anything that veers blue by anyone not permitted to do so. Some of the most misogynistic music ever made is being made today, but the censors dare not say anything for fear of violating their own progressive stack.
