THE ILLUSTRATIONS OF EINAR NERMAN HD
I first featured Einar Nerman quite early in the unsung heroes series, but as with a growing number of others I felt should return to his work in greater detail. At that time I made the mistake of pronouncing his name Eye-nar, but found out later in Swedish it's Ee-nar. Any other linguistic slip-ups featured here I also apologise for in advance. But I make no apologies for this extended look into his remarkably forward looking and entertaining body of work.
PS...thanks to the viewers who have explained that Kalles Skansen-besök translates as Carl's visit to Skansen. And apparently it should be Golden castle, not moth as I stated.

I don't think I've seen such a masterful use of positive and negative space in illustration. The images are striking and leave a visual impression, while communicating warmth and humor. Less is More!

@petebeard
Ай бұрын
@@blank557 Another viewer made a similar observation, and I honestly don't know the answer. Its possible of course, and I'm pretty sure that Nerman's image predates the kelloggs box. But it could just be coincidental, and I would be surprised if whoever designed it (presumably American) would have even heard of Nerman. The jury is well and truly out on this one.
These illustrations just confirm that less is more. It takes such talent and precision, and to know when enough is enough to produce such perfection. Just enough to let the viewers' imagination to fill in the rest. Love this collection.

Wonderfully vibrant, playful, inviting, and often comedic, Nerman's work has an undeniable charm to it. His caricatures, stylized design work, and simple lines, demand your attention. He was a fantastic illustrator for children's stories as his work is so often very sweet and cheerful. He's an artist worthy of remembrance and study.

A hundred years ago, really wasn't that long ago. I love the big red and black tiger with the long black and red tail. The way he used shapes together in such a way that they not only formed the front legs and tail, it gave them 3 dimensional qualities also. He mastered the use of negative space. Today's computers can easily recreate this, but all the work that went into creating the original is becoming a lost art.

I've heard of and know about the late Aubrey Beardsly, Swedish illustrator Carl Larrson and Erte, but not some others! Thankfully, we learn something new everyday! BTW, an illustrator is an artist as is a painter of many different styles. An illustrator is a commercial artist, a painter is a fine artist. A fine line between the two though as many famous fine artists have had their work commercialized, even after death! 🎨🖌😍♥

Many thanks for your appreciation. Here in the UK we tend to differentiate between art and illustration more than in the USA so I would never refer to myself as an artist - illustrator suits me just fine. There is a short and not very good resolution video on the channel of what I used to do when I was working, and if you put in a search for Pete Beard Portfolio you'll find it. Not earth shattering stuff, mind you.
Solstickan is on so many things in Sweden becose it is sold for support of young children and elderly, it is a charity. In the 1930s, when it was all created, matches and lighters was in common use but to day it is not as mush. To ceep the money coming in to the charity the brand has ventured out to other products such as fire extinguishers, tee lights, boxes and anything else they can think about that has something to do with fire or lights. Not all the of the sale of this things goes to the charity so it has been under some criticism over the years.

Basically, an Illustrator and an artist are the same thing.... America's most famous "illustrator" was Norman Rockwell...however, his originals were painted on canvas, they were only regarded as illustrations, when they were used as cover art, usually on the covers of the Saturday Evening Post magazine. It doesn't matter what it is used for... art is art.
