Evidence based medicine has been corrupted by
corporate interests,
failed regulation,
and commercialisation of academia,

Global trends in clinical studies of ivermectin in COVID-19
Morimasa Yagisawa, Patrick J. Foster, Hideaki Hanaki, Satoshi Ōmura
Kitasato University asked Merck & Co., Inc. to conduct clinical trials of ivermectin for COVID-19 in Japan.
This company has priority to submit an application for an expansion of ivermectin’s indications, since the original approval for the manufacture and sale of ivermectin was conferred to it.
However, the company said that it had no intention of conducting clinical trials.
The release into the public domain of previously confidential pharmaceutical industry documents,
valuable insight into the degree to which industry sponsored clinical trials are misrepresented
Until this problem is corrected, evidence based medicine will remain an illusion
Karl Popper
Critical rationalism,
advocated for the integrity of science and its role in an open, democratic society
A science of real integrity
practitioners are careful not to cling to cherished hypotheses,
and take seriously the outcome of the most stringent experiments
This ideal is, however, threatened by corporations,
financial interests trump the common good
Medicine is largely dominated by a small number of very large pharmaceutical companies,
that compete for market share,
but are effectively united in their efforts to expanding that market.
Scientific progress is thwarted by the ownership of data and knowledge because industry suppresses negative trial results,
fails to report adverse events,
and does not share raw data with the academic research community.
Patients die because of the adverse impact of commercial interests on the research agenda, universities, and regulators.
Hierarchical power structures, product loyalty,
and public relations propaganda over scientific integrity.
Universities, have adopted a neo-liberal market approach,
actively seeking pharmaceutical funding on commercial terms.
As a result, university departments become instruments of industry:
through company control of the research agenda,
and ghostwriting of medical journal articles and continuing medical education,
academics become agents for the promotion of commercial products.
The corporate university also compromises the concept of academic leadership.
Deans, (proper academics) have in places been replaced with fundraisers and academic managers,
who are forced to demonstrate their profitability or show how they can attract corporate sponsors.
In medicine, those who succeed in academia are likely to be key opinion leaders
(KOLs in marketing parlance),
whose careers can be advanced through the opportunities provided by industry,
physicians are selected based on their influence on prescribing habits of other physicians
KOLs are sought out by industry for this influence and for the prestige that their university affiliation brings to the branding of the company’s products.
KOLs present results of industry trials at medical conferences and in continuing medical education.
Instead of acting as independent, disinterested scientists and critically evaluating a drug’s performance, they become what marketing executives refer to as “product champions.”
While universities fail to correct misrepresentations of the science from such collaborations,
critics of industry face rejections from journals,
legal threats, and the potential destruction of their careers.
This uneven playing field is exactly what concerned Popper when he wrote about
Suppression and control of the means of science communication (Popper)
Regulators receive funding from industry,
and use industry funded and performed trials to approve drugs,
without in most cases seeing the raw data.
Drug companies, “mark their own homework”
Our proposals for reforms
liberation of regulators from drug company funding
taxation imposed on pharmaceutical companies to allow public funding of independent trials
anonymised individual patient level trial data posted,
along with study protocols,

It breaks my heart. I am a physician and all you highlighted here is true. There are still researchers with integrity but they are sidelined if they protest against unethical manipulation of data by pharmaceutical companies. Modern medicine has saved countless lives but the continuation and evolution of it should not be in the hands of those for whom the financial bottom line is more important than the actual health of a patient. In fact patients are already losing their trust in allopathic medicine. Even more worrying is the fact that money has such a pull that people will delude themselves into thinking they are doing good when long term implications have not been considered. With every patient decision I make, I have to consider if this decision may harm my patient, now or later, and it becomes increasingly difficult when I cannot fully trust that the medicines I might be prescribing have not been fully or honestly been evaluated. Vioxx comes to mind. I salute your courage in saying this on a public platform. There are those who would attempt to crucify you professionally.

My friend has been a doctor for going on 25 years. Started as a surgeon but due to family life decided to become a GP. I have kept regular contact by phone and internet during the pandemic. His dismay at the politicisation of medicine and the egregious profiteering directing policy, has been grim to hear. Doctors apparently are forming large social media groups like WhatsApp to freely share "real" information on stuff. Treatments etc. because they are not free to do so anymore without oversight from an economic standpoint. Says he never thought it would have come to this, where medical professionals would be mocked by people who could tell a femur from a hole in the ground.

I am practicing medicine for 30 years, fighting with system which has more authority than ever. The problem was deep and widespread for years, like you and the article point out, it’s not only the big pharmaceutical, big health insurance companies, ( Kaiser, Aetna), big universities, big research institutions like NIH ( Fauci, Collins), regulators, ( FDA, CDC) , hospitals, WHO, politicians , big “ philanthropist” ( like Bill Gate” who use pandemic as means of control, the list is long. It’s biggest swamp , bigger than the “ millitary industry complex” . They are writing the “ science results”, writing the rules and policies. everyone has to “ believe “ it, and follow, or you are out. I gave the article A+++ for having the guts to point it out.

I did my own Independent Study, I brought Iver mec tin in to my girl friend age 57, who was on her 21st day of hospital Covid protocol at the Matsu Reginal Hospital in Wasilla Alaska and dying. Blood clots in lungs from no movement! No visitors for the first 14 days, then ICU, I could finally visit on the 3rd 4th day of ICU. Then I realized that I was given IVM about 10 days earlier. So on her 21st day I brought it in and squirted about a gram on a spoon. I didn’t know how much to give so gave another gram 6 hours later and a half gram about every 24 hours for four more days. Here tummy gurgled during the whole awakening. She came alive right in front of everyone and I thank God for answering my prayer to help Luci! I told an RN on the day she was released. I wanted someone to know that it “WASN’T” their care that saved her. That it was a God given ingredient! 🙏🙏🙏🙏

I'm curious to see where the public are in 1-5 years when it comes to accepting new vaccines and drugs.

Okay, this was a very difficult discussion to live through. Mainly because I am a retired ARNP. I spent 40 years in the medical field. Saying that to say, I could research the data on medications that Physicians were told not to verbalize or give to their patients. I tried to talk to a relative of mine who would not believe what I was saying. She is not trained in the medical field but holds an administrative leadership position in a medical system. She kept saying I am going to go with what the physicians are saying in this system. It was really sad as I see the corruption and what it has done to our medical system. There we go… Bless you for presenting this issue. It is indeed contaminated by short term commercial interests…

They wanted someone with a medical background to write reviews of medications to get investors for the drugs. To give me an idea of what they wanted they showed me a review that someone had written about a new drug. I read it it was for a anti inflammatory drug much like ones we were already using for years. I said this is ridiculous we already have a drug that has been around for years and is cheap and works well. That was when I saw the future and lost a great deal of respect for drug companies.

A wise may question what he is being told however to make informed decisions we need to be experts in a field and clearly we need to draw the line somewhere and put trust somewhere because life is only so long to educate ourselves. Naturally going along with the majority in general is a safe approach, not necessarily the best but generally safe, following the advice of seniors in a field is difficult because con artists represent themselves very well as reputable at least to the majority of character types so what we are left with is opinions from government experts (governments often put politically driven reasons above technocratically driven reasons because they look at things holistically). My point is it’s always difficult to identify trustworthy sources of the truth and most of us read books by their covers (me being culpable as much as the next man)

I am long retired from academia, but during my even longer career in academia I witnessed, and criticised, the commercialisation of academia. And not just in medical faculties and departments. Commercialisation has permeated (infested?) the entire academic enterprise. That universities promote the pursuit of truth is a myth now. Researcher who bring in big money, based on their publications that toe the party line, are rewarded in academia. And if your research doesn't actually require big money to conduct, the researcher is not rewarded at all. There are also biases at the funding level. This I know from having served on the boards and review committees (and chairing those committees) of many funding agencies. There is a publication bias on another level too: If you haven't published in the "right" journals, you won't get funded. If you haven't published articles in line with the biases of the grant application reviewers you won't get funded. So much for objective peer review. There is also a problem at the very core of evidence-based anything. Namely statistical analyses. People tend to forget that ALL statistics MANIPULATE the data. And too many analyzers misuse and misinterpret statistical analyses because they haven't the foggiest notion just how the statistical programme has manipulated their data. This is much more prevalent now, given the "statistical packages" so readily available directly on one's personal computer. So researchers ignorant of statistics can tell their computer to apply a certain statistical analysis even though their data do not conform to the requirements for legitimate use of that particular analysis on their particular data and the computer just does what it is told. It is like putting lipstick on a pig or attempting to get a silk purse out of that sow's ear. One terribly prevalent misuse of statistical analyses is the application of scores of t-tests on multiple variables from the same participants. Okay. I will dismount from my hobbyhorse now. Thank you for "listening". 🤗

  • @ChrisM541

Totally agree with the use of these 'statistical programmes' - being an actual proper statistician is far from a requirement. They are about to graduate college with a degree and they are that incompetent!! I could not believe this. This is what happens when the admission standards are minimized and profit maximized. People who are unintelligent get in and then the education standards are lowered so they can pass. Along with your point about manipulated data, people seem to forget in general that statistical results are an estimation within a ramge of certainty, rather than themselves a reality.

We have paid into the NHS for 50 years, and he fears he will die before he gets operated on. Horrendous. I feel for you, your Dad and the millions of other ill elderly people living in fear and despair.

Very. It'd take me pages to describe the times the system failed me up here in canada. (in fairness i have also received great emergency care most of the time). But here are a few points : It is 1/6th of BC's economy. Just under half of taxes paid. I pay roughly 50% of my income in tax, before sales taxes etc. Since I started working at 14. I've paid an average of about 50k a year in tax. So I've probably paid our system at least 200k. (I'm 34) Was recently tossed out of an ER (along with others) by a tyrant nurse who was power tripping. I hopped out on one leg, and a lady walked away with split stitches and meat hanging from her foot. We'd been there all day, denied the use of the bathroom. I was denied the opportunity to wash up. An orderly felt bad for me and brought me some sani wipes. She was given shit for that. The woman in front of me was kicked out for sipping water with her mask down. I was then thrown out for giving my wallet to my GF at the door to get herself dinner. I was yelled at, cut off, screamed at, threatened with security, through it all, I got out less than 3 words. Just for standing up and going to the door. It took me 9 months to get a surgery when I was 10 or so. I grew 6 inches without being able to move my leg.... It is still screwed. Had a ball of bone/ scar tissue blocking my kneecap for 6 years, causing my knee to lock painfully and randomly. I was never listened to. They just told me to exercise more, and i was denied a X-ray until i found the thing myself. It risked my life at work, and prevented me from being able to run for a long time. I'd just randomly fall over in pain. And the more tired I was, the more it happened. Developed a chronic foot problem due to puncture wounds and a constantly wet environment. Treatments were too painful to walk on and still perform at work, so I let it go a few years. It got so painful I could hardly walk, and i hated every step. So I saved money for treatments. Took nine months to see a specialist, and that asshole milked me for all I was worth by providing only the most expensive care, and only intermittently, despite the fact it was extremely painful and barely worked. Refused to consider other options, and when we saw progress, he cancelled the treatments. Took me a year to get another referral to restart treatment. Finally convinced my local doc to pull out all the stops and do the most painful, aggressive treatment available. I saved up years to take time off to do it. 4 months I couldn't walk, could barely sleep, but it was working. Then, covid happened. It was all cancelled. And the problem came back. Laws had changed and so I found private care. 200$ and the problem was solved. Free follow up, and prompt care. The government then ordered me to isolate with my ex for 6 weeks, and then ordered her to isolate at my house for another 6 weeks. Then another 6 weeks. Then again. 50k fine and possible jail time for ignoring a PHO. So now I am common law married, because the health system micro managed my life. A friend of mine was not allowed to see his dying parents. Didn't matter they were dying. Couldn't risk covid. He got so mad his family had to restrain him, and he's a controlled enough guy that he is at or near the top of the law enforcement bureaucracy here. He never saw his mom in the last six months of her life. I could go on. Pages. But basically the gist is that our health system is bloated, arrogant, often useless, and massively overpriced. Also, if that nurse continues to treat people like that, someone will probably attack her at some point. It took all I had not to, and I'm a calm fellow.

Dr Campbell, thank you so much. I wish I could have you for my GP in America. I am a former Assistant Director for Metabolic Diseases from Smithkline Beecham. I left the company as I was responsible for the safety aspect and management of clinical research associates who were verifying clinical trial data at clinical sites. Often we were required to work with these key opinion leaders, who tasked their non research experience residents. The principal investigator was never involved, the quality of nurses and resitants resulted in numerous violation of the protocol, inadequate charting and follow up of patients. These situations were intolerable. In numerous studies on a drug called Avandia for type 2 diabetes, I found significant trends of cardiovascular abnormalities that I went to the in house medical monitor and asked if they were seeing these trends across all sites. He told me no. We then added insulin to the drug, and the events increased. I was in Toronto Canada for a meeting regarding another drug under study. I went to dinner that evening at an outdoor café alone, and I found the medical monitor seated at an adjoining table. I sat with my back facing the table and over heard the company medical monitor talking to who I became aware quickly was speaking with the study statistician. This was because they were discussing changing the study power. As you know this is absolutely never to be done midway in any study. I returned to the States and took my complaint immediately up the chain. Needless to say I was let go after 12.years of laudible service, having received many awards. I was right. Within 2 years the FDA removed the drug from the market for numerous cardiovascular deaths. Imagine my surprise when I learned the FDA gave the NIH authorization to renew studying the drug under a different compound # for new indications. I am disgusted with the industry, particularly because the NIH denied any early TX for Covid, and only Remdesivir, also under EUA which has similarly horrendous trial data. Patients have been denied TX with Ivermectin in hospital, and been permitted to refuse patients visitors or advocates for there care with hospitals incentivized to put patients on Remdesivir, many succumbing from kidney failure or cardiac failure due to toxicity. I cannot forgive these doctors for doing this. Life and empathy for life should be the underlying reason for being a doctor. There is no excuse for saying they made me do it or I would loose my job. Nor is it excusable for University Hospital doctors to keep their mouth shut just to keep their jobs. Sorry, they are as guilty as the rest. My disgust is where are all those American malpractice lawyers. What's their excuse

As an attorney engaged in litigation, I was very quickly taught that expert opinions are for sale. This greatly troubled me, because I had naively assumed that trials were exercises meant to uncover the truth of a matter. I did a lot of work in the area of what Michigan calls "Worker's Disability Compensation", which was a statutory scheme that covered people injured while on the job. The most common injury was a lower back injury. The rules of evidence do not allow the worker to testify in medical diagnostic terms. They are not doctors. Making a diagnosis requires a medical degree. Similarly, assessing the extent of the disability flowing from a back injury also requires a medical degree. The injured worker basicall can only testify as to the symptoms they are experiencing. The insurance company hired a Board Certified orthopedic physician as its expert. He or she always opined that, after one exam (which many times involved nothing more than asking questions) that the worker had suffered no injury and therefore had no disability. If by chance something, an x-ray, for example, showed an obliterated disc or vertebral fracture in the lower back, the testimony would be that, yes, there was some evidence of an injury, but it was obviously a pre-existing condition, and that it did not in any way impair the worker's ability to work in any way. In short, these doctors were hired to lie. It was quite a lucrative field for those with the stomach to do so. I admit to being part of that corrupt system, hiring Plaintiff's experts who gave "opinions" just as phony, but in the direction of always finding a serious and totally disabling work injury. It was only a very short leap of logic for me to assume academic studies followed the same rules. Whoever paid for a study got whatever conclusion it desired. If you wanted a study that a drug had no efficacy, the clever medical researchers would come up with a protocol which would produce data that would support the purchased conclusion and have within in it some pseudo-scientific explanation why contrary data points had to be excluded.

So many of them are essentially mechanics or technicians, who aren't well practiced in or suited to the work of old-fashioned, dialogue-based, history-taking diagnostic medicine. Well done Dr John! I worked in academia for 9 yrs in the field of ovarian cancer research. Our lab was interested in a novel selective chemical agent that targeted cancer cells. It showed alot of promise in vitro and in vivo. You are spot on with the information you present in this video. Personally, it was very disheartening to investigate novel compounds that showed such potential only to fall short when it came to patents and money making. Much of the research I did was funded through small grants but no private sector pharmaceutical companies were interested in pursuing the patent. Ovarian cancer makes up only 4% of the cancer cases according to American Cancer Society. The work we did was eventually abandoned due to lack of funding for Phase 1 trial. Further, as you so bluntly stated, often times data on existing drugs is not published if the results do not show efficacy, especially if the drugs ars considered a "gold standard" for other cancers. I would like to see academia have access to raw data regardless of who funds the research. My two cents!

Thank you Dr. Campbell, frequent watchers like us admire and respect you because you've always been fair in your analysis of every topic you analyze, expound and discuss. I found this particular topic very enlightening, although I'm sure many people might already be aware of the inherent bias in the so-called evidence-based medicine and even in other sciences. In the end of the article where proposals were presented, I believe that the most important recommendation is the independent funding of clinical trials and studies. However, I think this is easier said than done, and this is an area where more detailed fund-sourcing studies have to be made. Shall rich countries and governments pool their resources to directly fund these independent clinical trials? Can or should we include financially-capable but independent private humanitarian agencies as co-sponsors provided they are thoroughly investigated against potential conflict of interest? On the the big pharmaceutical companies controlling the narratives on evidence-based medicines, their apparent bias will somehow be tempered if pertinent laws and regulations will be crafted to minimize if not totally eradicate these biases, some of which are as follows: 1. The studies and clinical trials of say, top 5 (or top 10) big pharmaceutical companies, although approved already by the government regulator such as FDA and others, must still be vetted by a third party, say the 11-15th (or 16-20th) - ranked (respectively) non-affiliated pharmaceutical companies, or other disinterested parties. This is to avoid conspiracy or collusion between the government regulator and the pharmaceutical company. 2. As humanitarian measure during any future pandemic, all new medicines (treatment and prevention/mitigation) and new vaccines to be invented and given emergency-use authorization or full approval (as the case may be) shall, thru government intervention, be temporarily exempted from patent and shall be priced at no or minimal profit although governments will be the ones procuring them. Hence during any pandemic, all other pharmaceutical plants will be able to copy and produce the drugs or vaccines without restriction, ensuring enough and quick supply & distribution even to poorest countries. Once the pandemic has been officially declared as over, that's the only time they can apply for patent after which they can price them commercially. These are just some thoughts that entered my mind, I'm sure there are other better or more comprehensive and detailed recommendations from other parties as well. Lastly, I find the words of the Bible so true when it said that "the Love of Money is the Root of all Evil". Clearly, money is the motivation and driving force here that is spoiling the supposed evidence-based medicine. Thank you for your time, and more power to your channel.

I just absolutely love your commentary on this! It extrapolates the issues so well even in the academic and educational realms what the issues are even in choosing phD candidates! Amazing. My experience in the academic environment in political science I witnessed just that - how PhD candidates were chosen based on their profitability to the industry and ability to mold the people into what they want them to be versus the ability to bring brilliant objective minds to a field of study. This very process I believe impedes true objective research in any field.

Its difficult because it costs enormous amounts of money for research and trials. Someone has to pay it, and right now only large companies have the funds. Its also risky. Companies could throw huge amounts of money at something that fails. But due to capitalism, as a business they have to show some kind of gain for their investment, which obviously leads to suppressing of negative results. Thats why there is regulation to try and combat this. But if we make it difficult for companies to guarantee profits, who is going to invest the hundreds of thousands of dollars into research?

And STATINS just shown to not help, but actually hurt people, after 30 years of use, all are generics. (Code for no money/uninteresting). I’ve just been in a study called Cor- Cal it has to do with how much calcium is found in your coronary arteries of your heart and they look at your lipid panel to see if the results agree with each other, high lipid panel equals high LDL equals high calcium in the blood and arteries. I have zero high calcium in my arteries and I have a high LDL. Why did it take so long to do this study? It involved a CAT scan and a lipid panel. Of course I held my breath for the CAT scan but they also used an EKG to take the pictures in between the heartbeats to get a perfect picture of the arteries. This is being done by Intermountain health in the Rocky Mountains of Utah and Idaho. We have generally good health because about 50% don’t drink and don’t smoke. I want to look at the trial and see the data. As you say Dr. Campbell any trial participant should be able to look at the outcome data. I did find that I had ground glass opacities throughout both of my lungs which usually goes with Covid but I had Covid a year and a half ago. It is not scattered or traces it is over the whole lungs, which I did not know I had. Lung cancer can start like this but I had no mediastinal lymph node enlargement which is a good sign. I worked in a NICU for 5 years as an RN as I was getting my Masters in Nursing, Family Nurse practitioner. We all clean about two isolettes ( incubators) every day with very strong chemicals and since I worked there they did find that these chemicals were causing COPD. I may pursue looking for reasons for why the ground glass opacities lung problems and how it has affected my breathing and exercise tolerance.

I agree, but just one thing: I was a medical researcher for 8 years at Harvard Medical School. I met and worked with several hundred other scientists, and I never met one who was completely unbiased and "followed the science." The best you can hope for is a hard-fought consensus, and if *opinion* is substantially divided, there will be no consensus. Yes, pharma companies are profit-minded, but scientists are grant-minded and often politically-minded, and that's probably worse because people are just now waking up to it.
