The Illegal World of Chinese Bootleg Games | Xplay
Ойындар
Xplay dives into the bootleg bonanza that was the 1980s in China. Nintendo was out of reach for Chinese families, so knock-off game consoles exploded leading to unauthorized Tekken 3 in 8-bit, a Pikachu platformer, Final Fantasy 7 for the NES, Pokemon Jade and Pearl, and a new Sonic The Hedgehog game featuring Super Mario?? Jackie Chan was even the face of a giant keyboard that played Nintendo games! This video is an absolute multiverse of madness of games that should not exist.

As an 80s child who often visited my parents' native country of Vietnam, I saw TONS of these systems/compilations/modifications/add-ons. Storytime: my mind was blown as a SNES kid. On my Asia travels, they had a SNES add-on that was fed 3.5" floppys. I always wanted to bring these back to the US with me but was told customs wouldn't allow it. Now I know I should've brought ALL OF THE ADDONS with me.

Shoutout to Jefferson's awesomeness in this episode. This is oddly fascinating, i was not aware of how wild of a rabbit hole Bootlegs Games was and still is.
When the NES Classic and other mini consoles started popping up, Famiclones also saw a bit of a resurgence. For some parts of the world, those truly were the face of retro gaming.
It is so nice having editorial segments like this just delving into odd corners of gaming. I love retrospective gaming history videos
Makes me wonder how many of the games I played growin' up in the Philippines were bootlegs
As a Southeast Asian, it is quite common to come across bootleg consoles and modded games. Additionally, it is frequent for us to purchase a single game that contains an entire library collection of games from specific video game titles or even old consoles.
he's not leaving right? Like Ovalee < can't spell so fire me! Come on I like them!
I collect chinese emulator (handheld) and there's some AMAZING handhelds now for under 40$ US. I have 3 that play Playstation 1, GBA, 32X,Arcade and every sega and nintendo product that are less than 64 bits. To play Tekken 2 or Final Fantasy 7 flawlessly on a 40$ handheld is crazy impressive to me.
It's great seeing Adam Sessler with fresh new faces like Jefferson. It brings a re-energized sense of nostalgia. Jefferson and Adam bounced off each other really well. I've been learning about Video Game history for 10+ years and I never knew the history of bootleg games! Great video guys!
You guys hit the nail right on the head! For youngsters living in poorer countries, these bootlegs were often the only viable and/or available option for gaming. While things have since improved, console (and PC) gaming is still a pricey hobby. That's why I won't knock mobile gaming too hard; poor people need to have fun like everyone else.
Lmao visiting family in the Philippines, bootleg games were so fascinating. It was like a whole new world.
Damn this was an amazing history lesson to bootleg games of the past. Hell even there’s hella representation of Asian and even Filipino experience especially to video games. Also bravo to jeff being on camera once again, can’t believe he’s no longer there. MAN i just realized how much bootleg playstation games i would get from the philippines only to realize my parents or relatives going "hey why won't these games work" and then going through the whole modding my playstation. oh man how much further can you explore this topic lol
Wow how did I not know China was barely able to buy consoles by 2015?! That is actually insane.
@yangj08
Жыл бұрын
I spent my high school years in China and while you could barely buy consoles at home, if you knew someone then you could import consoles through them whenever they went to a nearby country since personal items brought back were perfectly fine. As someone who traveled to Japan a lot while studying abroad in China, I was that someone for some of my local classmates.
So, ETA on the Polystation review?
As a self-admitted FFVII zombie I must say that bootleg NES version of that was impressive. Bear in mind, as long as some key likenesses were used and a battle system like the FF series' was used the developers could have just thrown together whatever lame game they felt like. But instead it looks like the three-disc Playstation blockbuster was heavily researched, then carefully pared down and retrofitted into the best NES adaptation the developers could manage. If FVII was legitimately remade nowadays by Square-Enix in a retro version using NES-era programming and sprites, I'd *LOVE* to have it. It would be so deliciously novel to see and play the most famous FF title, the first to be 3d, in that manner.
Same here. In the Phils, original consoles were too expensive so bootleg or what we call "pirated" games were all we got afford but it gave a chance to play a variety of games we wouldn't have been able to.
Really loving these longer in-depth episodes of Xplay. It's some of your best work. Not as limited as it was than back in the TV days.
First time in this channel but I love how it hits so much PH childhood. I don't remember as much with Polystation but that GLK-2010 along with VCD 300 DVD players. Bruh.
Fun fact: the NES Clones were even avilable in Germany :-D my friend had a SNES look alike NES clone with a Zapper gun and over 200 games included (ok it was maybe 40 or so the games were repeated and started at different levels or had other power ups as standard. Contra for example had one version were the spread gun was the standard) ... you mostly got these consoles on flee markets
I had one of those famiclones! In my country a real NES was too expensive bc we didn't yet have trading with countries like the US so imports were incredibly expensive yet Chinese products (which were contraband at the time) were really cheap! I loved my famiclone, it was identical to an original Famicom down to the Nintendo branding. The only thing that didn't work was the speaker on the 2nd controller. People here didn't call it Nintendo or NES, they called it Family due to the prominent name on the machines and boxes. Even the original NES were called Family and some kids even thought the NES was *the* fake one 😂
@henrysokol3466
Жыл бұрын
And nowadays, Famiclones can and are openly sold around the world, because Nintendo's copyright protection on the hardware has run out. They sell decently, too: it's easier to find old cartridges on the market than the consoles that play them.
@henke37

That was a mic, not a speaker.
It hits too hard with that Filipino auntie bit.. One of my godfathers (I have a lot of them), got me NBA2K 2006 in 2008, for PS2. I had a fun time, but like... Yeah... Lol... NBA2k 2006, the one with Shaq on it when he was in the Miami heat. Lol, 100% he definitely tried Also, the Pokemon jade also hits... Goddammit... I remember being at a family party and one of the other kids was like "hey, I have this new Pokemon game" *pulls out Gameboy advance SP* "look at how cool this is" It was weirdly enough a super cool experience basically believing that Pokemon jade was a new Pokemon game, lol... This video is too stupidly relatable
The ones I find cool are the Digimon bootlegs. Since it never got as popular as Pokémon in America I've always felt slim pickings. I'd love a Pokémon style Digimon game, technically Cyber Sleuth but I didn't really care about the small confines of the story/world.

I remember seeing Pokemon Jade and other titles online as ROMs for GB/GBA, as well as seeing a physical copy of Jade when I was little. However as for 2022 I wouldn't mind getting some specific GB/GBA cartridges, since some of the genuine ones are way out of my budget 😅
After Jefferson bears his heart "Lets talk about Pokemon!"
It is sad that these countries make our systems but couldn’t afford ones themselves! So good on them for making bootleg games!
These things are still in circulation in some malls in the Philippines. 🤣
As a Gen Z born in South East Asia, I can confirm getting an official NES game console and game cartridge is very difficult

Indonesian here. I grew up with modchipped PS1 and PS2, also used to own official Sega Megadrive but with bootleg 19in1 cartridge. I saw PolyStation in late 1990s to early 2000s but never bought that. But we had local video games magazine like Hotgame, Game Station, and Ultima here up to 2010.
I turned this off before I got to 4:00 because I had 4 commercials over 3 commercial breaks. Insane!
I have a Super Pretendo and a Sega Fakesis!! They're so great!!!!
In my childhood playing this clone console and bootleg games here in the Philippines. Im surprise i did not encounter this knock off mixed characters in one title of another game as some sequel.
This was a pretty fun and enjoyable video! I would have missed it if it weren't for a recommendation by Vito.
As a Singaporean kid i remember in the 2000s knockoff consoles were popular as they were cheap and many parents here tend to go for the cheaper alternative. Funny thing i recall i had a gameboy knockoff the console was so bad it is unplayable. I also recall having GBA cartridge with like 999 games but with three main gba games that you can't even saved the game progress. The rest were just NES games and clones
Chip & Dale with guns fighting gorillas is hilarious
Minions is an Adventure Island reskin. Which is already an official reskin of a hypothetical NES version of Wonder Boy.
As a kid i only played these bootleg games , i couldn't afford playstation and other legit consoles
Jefferson really killed the Filipino impressions! I feel like I have a different view on Bootlegs now bc of this vid too!
New G4 keeps getting better and better. You guys are growing into your own style and personality while keeping what made G4 so integral to our lives back then, an honest blend of knowledge and comedy. Excellent performance from Adam and Jefferson, and big ups to the research team on this one.
Ah yes, buying bootleg Chinese videogame consoles in Isetan Recto or Harrison Plaza is the rite of passage of every poor Filipino kid from the 90's till the early 2000's.
Watching Adam takes me back to going to my cousin's every weekend as a middle school and high schooler. Skate all day , game all evening and G4 at night.
As someone from Pakistan, I had to buy a bootleg Chinese Famicom Console which has the inbuilt games which were legit. but a large part of games on cartridges was bootleg. in Pakistan, only one of our cousins had the original NES from the US and his father had dubious means of income. If someone had an original NES or FAMICOM either these people's source of income was questionable or they were businessmen's kids. Not a lot of middle class people could afford the original NEX/ FAMICOM or even genuine cartridges.
I grew up with an Asian mom. That impression was spot on. 😂
Ive been looking for the english name for the fema clone for a long time. I played these before I immigrated from China. They were so awesome. Thank you dad for the childhood.
Yeah my family here in the US didn't have enough money for a nintendo when it first came out. Eventually I got my first game console. Even though it wasn't a nintendo but a sega master system it was still one of the best Christmas's ever.
Minions is a hack of Adventure Island, a game that had 3 original versions released on the NES. They just changed the background and "boy" sprites. The fruits and etc remains the same.

Here is a story I learnt that no one talks about: So back in like in the mid 90s or so samsung a popular electronic company from south korea produced some bootleg copies of snes games but they did not do bootleg they officially released sega consoles in south korea due to a boycott that prevented japanese products from coming from south korea but this boycott ended around in uh 1998 or 2002 but nintendo sued them for piracy violation but samsung learned their lesson and destroyed all of the bit of bootleg snes game copies they had in their stock so nintendo teamed up with samsung to stop bootlegged games from coming in areas like eastern europe, south amercia and across asia and this is one of the extremely instances where a company is sued from making bootlegs but learnt their lesson and destroyed their bootlegged copies/games and helped with the company that sued them to stop other bootlegs sorry for that repeating I'm commenting this late at night.
Wonder Boy, aka Adventure Island! I recognized the movement of the minion and the throwing motion INSTANTLY!
Awesome upload!🙌🎮 Adam and Jefferson, great Xplay combo . Anything better and it would involve Morgan Webb. That's all I need. 👍
I have one of those mini NES knockoffs. My wife "won" it for $12 online somewhere. It was actually worth the $12 shipping in my opinion though. Its loaded with over 600 8-bit games, some authentic like Blaster Master and Excite Bike and others generic clones of Super Mario and Ninja Turtles and stuff, but they're still fun. I didn't expect what I ended up getting.
In the early 2000s in Bulgaria, I bought a famiclone that looked like a psone, but had genesis 6-button controllers.
Ha! My first console was due to my high grades in Elementary School. Dad promised me to buy a "Family Computer" if I could show him good grades and I did. The following Sunday, after church, we went to electronic shop and I could still remember tune 📺 TV's that plays demos of colorful Famicom games. The endless array of colorful game cartridges. I was expecting the red and white Famicom console like I saw in my friends' house, but the sales lady said they ran out, so I ended up getting the gray Famiclone that I was hugging the whole time we were on the bus ride heading home. On the of endless joy I was experiencing, we had Jollibee after shopping. I was the happiest kid. Now, that I can afford to buy latest and greatest console(s), nothing can match the buying experience I had with the "bootleg" console. Buying another game console is not the same, let alone playing games.
Damn, I didn’t know the world of bootleg games was this deep. My only experience with this world were those weird looking handheld devices with dozens of games on them
I like how the Chip n' Dale box art isn't even the titular characters. It's Fievel and some random teddy bear with a headband.
There is one bootleg and that game is Mario 14 aka Jackie Chan action Kung fu what makes it fun all move item you get are limited for actual game but in bootleg version you get infinity move
I remember the Family Game (NES bootleg) that was sold in South America for a long time, it used to come with thousands of titles in one cartridge, mostly 9-10 games and their hundreds of thousand alternated copies, that even came with Super Mario Bros. I haven't seen one of those in the US or even online, but I knew a lot of people who had the Family Game when I was a kid.
15:38 This is Wonder Boy (1986). mostly known as Adventure Island
18:58 That's one vicious looking Tokomon. As a big Digimon fan, part of me wants to try these.
if I can't buy sketchy stuff from the internet where else can I buy it
Unlike the Filipino aunties who buys Famiclones for their kids because it has a familiar character they know about, at least I can give my relatives in Mexico any video game console or game give to them, and not just some cheap Famiclone console or NES game, it also helps that Mexico continues to have a large supply of official consoles.
Pokemon Jade version unlocked a memory in me! I remember really enjoying that game inspite of it being not a Pokemon game at all and finished it. I remember also that I begged my father to buy that game for me in Toy Kingdom, Festival Mall at Muntinlupa, Philippines. Haha. This is also where I bought the Gameboy Color Version of Pokemon Ruby (Another bootleg one). It retained the Pokemons in it but it didn't feature the Gen 3 Pokemons and all of the attack moves were wack! And the letters were just a jumbled mess. I also finished this game. Haha.
Mine's bootleg brand was "Good Boy" and it had Christmas lights blinking while I'm playing it. I had together it together with my Sega Mega Drive and Gameboy. Good times!
I was one of the buyer of those 9 million in 1 game cartridge. I remember they have "Konami" logo on the cartridge and they cost like US$ 15 each
The cool thing about the bootleg cartridges/consoles with a bunch of games on them is that some of the games are bound to be good just by probability. I mean, that's definitely true with Super Console X where most of the games are true to the original. At least most of the ones I've played.
I swear as a kid in the 90s I had the bootleg pokémon game from the thumbnail it was very hard to get it to boot up on my game boy color but once in awhile it would work and it was actually kind of cool
18:42 this reminds me of Leene Square just before Marle's teleport attempt.... just between 2 cauldrons
