That’s most games sadly. Just 8-10 years ago when most companies weren’t hungry for every dollar they could squeeze out of every they made. Games just aren’t the same anymore

Going back 10 years was the appropriate time to go back but even thinking about doing that feels exhausting. Thank you for doing the leg work, and gave us something to go on. I would really like to see how/if this influences the '23 review. Thanks for the great work, guys!

The fact that it's impossible to make a game that simulates a real sport feel fresh and new every year is why I think they should have gone with the Expansion route rather than an all-new game each year. Price them accordingly and the minimal changes would have been better received. Maybe every fourth game could be heavily revamped graphically and re-balanced with new modes that would make it a new game for full price. But this releasing the same game for full price needs to stop. It won't because the NFL and the shareholders want their shower of money, but it should.

@@shaepsycho There COULD BE, though. The PS5/XSX are extremely powerful for console boxes and they could significantly increase not only the graphics, but the player AI. The biggest leap in "game feel" would certainly be a significant increase in AI player capabilities -- but AI programming is difficult and expensive and we all know EA doesn't like to spend money on ANYTHING

@@erikhendrickson59 NO. The biggest increase would be presentation. Crowd participation, broadcast packaging and commentary. That is where you freshen up the experience. Madden NFL is the worst sports game out in presentation, by far.

I got an ad with Ed Helms in it not even five seconds after you said “Was that Ed Helms?” I was choking laughing.

I’ve been loving the sports content mixed in with Xplay, it’s like two of my loves coming together. Football and gaming.

I love the political references in a lot of Sessler’s reviews. It almost feels like a Venn diagram with me being the only overlap. I know exactly what you mean.

Short answer: Yes Long Response: YES, the game doesnt really change, its always a repaint and you can see it progressively get more aggressive to push you into the MUT mode just to hope they get that one player who's mentally weak enough to spend money in it. Fifa and 2K do the same thing its truly sad. The Ultimate Team modes get the most focus and it does a disservice to what the games could be. Go back to even older Maddens, like 08, it felt better, each game felt like abit more effort was there, then Ultimate Team happened.

2K games def do change. 2K feels different every year

The issue that the players have is that the Ultimate Team rakes millions per year now, EA has no rush to start a new engine or even put in a full effort

06 had the QB vision, and it became my favorite Madden. As a 13 year old, my franchise mode and created teams were days spent with joy.

14:29 "I think career modes don't get enough love." Detractors of Madden have BEEN COMPLAINING ABOUT CAREER/FRANCHISE MODE FOR OVER 10 YEARS NOW. That was the understatement of the century so far.

Really enjoyed this. Would love to see a version of this for FIFA , NBA2K and MLB .

I've read from multiple sources that people who play one version of FIFA for years and then try a new one say that the new one feels like just a mod of the old one. FIFA never changes.

Maaaaan… with all the remakes and rehashing going on, I’m very surprised there hasn’t been an NFL Blitz successor to put the fun back in the game.

NFL won’t allow blitz to use their players or logos anymore. It’s “bad for the brand” They made blitz the league for OG Xbox and that was the last one

Can you imagine all the good football games that could have been a thing in today's era of gaming like it was in the late 90s and early 2000s. That's NFL for not allowing gaming competition anymore.

This was a fantastic idea for a video! Would love to see this kind of thing continue where they go through some other game franchises (Call of Duty, Halo, FIFA) and do what they did here. Could just simply call it Franchise$

I'm surprised you guys didn't mention that Madden 16 is when they made the decision to switch the game to the Frostbite engine, which explains why 16 onward felt the same (in a bad way). Go figure that when you use an engine built for shooters in a sports game it goes full jank lmfao

What Madden needs is actual competition. Until a competent NFL game comes out that is not named Madden or is not an EA product they will have no real incentive to innovate or push themselves and this cycle will continue.

@@cruman87 Technically EA only has exclusivity in simulation NFL games but I doubt the NFL will ever change their licensing in our lifetimes... unless EA seriously messes up or some big changes in the NFL leadership.

@@shadoudirges Right yes only simulation games. That killed the other competitors such as the 2K series. Other game developers could make NFL games like NFL Blitz or something but I think most people want a simulator like Madden or the 2K series.

This is the big 3 for this Channel need more videos with these 3. Funny as hell, Insightful and they actually care about the stuff they are doing one of my favorite videos from this channel would love to see one on the Call of duty series next

Even if you go back and play NCAA 13 that just feels so much better than any kind of movement in this new Madden.

This was a fantastic analysis and truly a Herculean effort to play through the older games, so the experience is fresh and not tainted by nostalgia, or what you thought the older games were like. I'd love to see this done with other annual franchises like Call of Duty, Halo, NBA2K, FIFA, etc. because while the answer might be a foregone conclusion, I think the analysis might bear some surprises as well as the thought process of how the games were developed... Like when Jake said, he sees the pattern with Madden where they innovate every three years, but nothing in between.

Thanks, for liking the comment! By the way, I have a friend who is a former EA developer who worked on the Madden, games. He watched the video and confirmed what Jake theorized: The only time the games move forward and add features and improve presentation is every few years due to change in console hardware (360 to XB1) and/or when changing engines (Frostbite). The game's code base basically stays the same year to year barring bug fixes, but individual development teams are brought on annually to add new features. So, the game is more or less the same thing every year, but not the way the general public thinks. It was interesting to hear insight from somebody who worked on Madden, and knows how annual franchises work.

NOW THIS is the xplay content we love to see. Would be nice to have a formal intro with a announcer voice like back in the day though.

Never got into madden, but love this video. Would love to see more videos were you look at long running game series and what changes or lack of. Just hope you keep your sanity in the process. Maybe a racing series next.

Ive been playing Madden since Madden 94. I started feeling Madden going down hill was the year Drew Brees was on the cover. I remember the game being so bad I started not playing the game. Instead, I would be like a GM or owner. After assembling my team, I would then watch my team play instead of me playing. I actually enjoyed that and thought this was going to be my Madden experience moving forward. However, the very next year, they took away the option where you could not watch your team anymore. Instead you had a simulate the game. The last Madden I have bought was the one with Richard Sherman on the cover. I liked it the QB option was dope with Kap. But as soon as I saw the micro transaction mode, I was done. I now play Madden 07 on my PS2 to get my football fix. It's jaw-dropping better with it how you can develop players, create a team, create a stadium, and allowing the franchise mode to have a full NFL experience with training camps and developmental side games. I hate what EA has become.

Madden 03 was my jam. Great game, great soundtrack, madden cards. Now its all ultimate team. Sucks.

Really solid video by all involved. Really enjoyed the concept and the execution. I feel like Madden as a franchise has gotten old. It's hard to make the game feel or play better/different when the model they currently have IS so successful and makes EA Boatloads of cash. I think if football games were to be expanded to other franchises outside of Madden, we could see some very new and inventive styles of gameplay. 10/10 video. More longform review series like this would be appreciated in the future.

Madden actually released on PS360 until Madden 17, but 13 was the last year the PS360 versions were the primary platforms. Also Madden 25 on PS360 had Barry Sanders on the cover and released in its normal August timeframe, while the next gen PS4/XB1 versions with Adrian Peterson on the cover were launch titles for the then new platforms.

This was a fantastic video. Madden and sports games in general NEED to go to a free-to-play Call of Duty style format. I haven't bought a brand new Madden since '20. It use to be a ritual of mine every August. But the monopoly that EA has over the NFL football sim product SUCKS. Great video!

Really enjoyed the video! I find myself skipping years because of the “samey”feel. Why spend $60 for a mostly repeat. I liked your suggestion of focusing or using the mini games but even go a step further put out the mainline game and off years do a more arcade style or like NBA playground style but keep updating rosters. Could then have the sim and “party” game to balance the line up. Great vid guys

The play book seems like it never gets an update. Same plays every year on both sides.

I don't watch football or play football video games, but I still enjoyed this video. I'd like to see y'all do a follow-up video where you spend more time with the Maddens that you liked the most and decide which one is the best.

Boys! This video was analytical, and smartly presented. Kudos. As someone who loves sports games but avoids them because of the sameness this was great. Keep it up. And…as a lifelong cardinals fan, I feel the pain.

Xplay+, i think this may be your niche. Lean into the sports games and hip hop/rap games. This video, the NBA2k video, the Def Jam video, and the "Football is just a turn based RPG" video have all been some of the best content from New G4 so far. Jake, Joe, and TBH are great and this seems like this is where their strengths are best utilized.

Add a first person mode in the new iteration, maybe have a pvp mode in first person too have whole teams of players and even have a coach do the plays. I guess that’s more a simulation of football than the feeling madden gives.

Unfortunately, there's an underlying issue with Madden (and EA sports titles in general), that slides past this video. The fact is most Madden fans that I've poked with this question before don't really want any changes besides a roster update. I'll explain if you don't mind reading a bit. I only ever owned Madden 02 and 05, but played 03 and 04 at my uncle's. I never bought them because they felt a little too similar to me. Around 09 to 11, I had gotten curious, as the only people I knew who played Madden bought each new game solely for a roster update, and felt like that alone was worth the price. So I created a poll and threw it out there, asking Madden fans why they bought each new installment, what the biggest reason was. When the poll ended, the answer was overwhelmingly a roster update. When they commented below, they couldn't understand the hate thrown at Madden because, to them, $60 was a fair price for a roster update, and to keep playing online. Every year, I'd casually ask people who bought Madden why they did. The answer was usually the same, but with a new wrinkle. I'd now also get people stating the roster update, but also that the game was the closest thing to fantasy football for them. They also claimed they didn't want a F2P model, because it would let 'fake fans' in, whatever that means. With that, I kind of stopped, because there was no point asking anymore. Come Madden 23, I have one friend and 2 associates who bought it. All 3 didn't care about new animations, with 2 stating that they didn't matter because you, the player, should be celebrating. When asking about the roster, all 3 said $70 was still a fair price for a roster update, all actually even stating the fantasy football bit. Personally, I feel that Madden and it's fans deserve better. But through my years of asking the similar question, I've just accepted they don't want better. It sucks that there's only one name in town for realistic sports sims, but from what I've gathered, fans of Madden, FIFA, etc., they don't really want innovation. They don't want to have to memorize a whole new set of controls. They want to pay for a roster update, and go right back to playing the exact same way they were playing a day before with the previous title. And if that's what the fanbase wants, who are we to call them out on it. Sure, we think it's a ripoff, and fans still complain about the bugs and the monetization (which seems to be giving the games more and more negative reviews), but if they think $60, $70, hell $100 is worth a roster update, that's on them.

So, I never really played a football or sports game in general, besides 06 for 10 minutes with a friend, but I would always watch coverage of the sport games on Xplay when an episode aired. Each year with a new one, I saw some gameplay differences and graphical improvements, but it's just the same over and over... I've never seen any sports game coverage since then in gaming news, until now, because of people have vocally said "Sports games are don't even try anymore."

The only Madden game you need is Madden 08, just ask Scott The Woz.

Madden should definitely go to a live service game. They should also look into bringing Blitz back. Either in its own game, or as a setting within madden. If COD can have zombies mode, give me blitz mode. I want to feel the dual sense as I choke slam a running back at the line of scrimmage.

The answer is no. Madden isn't the same game every year. Sometimes they're worse.

Ultimately it is the same game, football, every year. You get the same rules, the same plays, the same teams...there isn't going to be a whole lot you can do to change the core game and once you get the mechanics right, why change them? Different modes, roster updates, sure. But it's going to be incremental at best.

This is why we missed G4. Honesty! Not paid reviews of paid gamers pretending that everything is fine.

Honestly Madden should have been subscription based years ago. It should allow auto update of rosters and any new jerseys. These minor tweaks a year could be fixed patch updates, any new game disc should only be for new consoles. Year over year update to game kills the line like COD. taking years off helps give devs time to build a better game.

This is sad, if you’re not an avid madden fan you shouldn’t be doing this discussion because you don’t even know enough about the product. And dropping this the same week as madden release is a promotion of madden

Haven't played Madden since 2010. It's just not what it used to be.

I haven’t had fun with Madden since Madden 06. And back when ESPN NFL 2K5 was out also, best football games of all-time.

Just make a game every 3 years, and do a season pass for players ect. until then

They never should have put frostbite as the engine of the game there was nothing wrong with the ignite engine whatsoever. Clearly the frostbite engine was made specifically for battlefield and just like you said it has ruined madden future titles and anthem as well.

Gotta say I love this format. Can we get nba2k and the WWE 2k games? Feels like the consumer needs to see these yearly releases compared.
