For the people that say that The Hurt Locker did not deserve Best Picture, this is one of the most critically acclaimed war movies ever. It won multiple awards at several film festivals, not just the Oscars. Do you people think an average movie is going to get that much praise by movie experts? Just because it is not a fast paced, action filled, fun movie, that doesn't mean it's not a masterful one.

scifinerd17 dude, the only reason why The Hurt Locker won is because the people on the Oscar board were a bunch of old white men that in real life supported a war that was just as pointless as the war in Vietnam. They have no vision, they could never be open to modern films, and they only support movies that in their eyes are traditional. And on top of that, they always discriminate against science fiction films.

I can understand why Hanks presented the award in that fashion. The pacing of this show was terrible to begin with. Why should it take 5 minutes to announce the nominees and why do the clips have to be so long. Hanks was like, screw it, the pacing is already bad, let's get it over it. Great way to make a statement Hanks.

Man. Poor Tarantino. All of his movies are worthy of academy awards, but Inglourious Basterds was probably the movie that was "typical oscar material-y" enough to get him an oscar. Especially in 2010 when so many movies were nominated. Any other year half of em probably wouldn't have been nominated for anything at all. Keep making amazing movies Tarantino. You deserve a lot more than what you get. I hope one of these days you win an oscar. You deserve it.

i really dont get why people disagree with this..the hurt locker was THRILLING, suspenseful...made you sit on the edge of your seat...thats what movies are supposed to do...avatar was great for the art aspect of movies and deserved the wins it got...but as far as best picture, the hurt locker wins anyday

My Opinion is that Inglorious Basterds was the best film of 2009 but some people may feel different obviously the academy does.

I agree, Inglorious was much more entertaining, but I do have that feeling Hurt Locker had a much better chance with the similarities of how Tom Hanks compared Casablanca to the world back then when it was in great turmoil. Not in the sense that it was about the politics but about the messages in the film. I guess you can compare this with American Sniper. If you can push politics aside, its a great movie.

***** But My thing is that not only was Inglourious Basterds more entertaining bur it also contains incredibly metaphysical dialogue and Characters. The Hurt Locker was a good screenplay but not better than Basterds. Even with alk the politics pushed to the side

Jordan Alford My point being if I were part of the Academy, I wouldve placed my vote on Tarantino over Boal, but its clear why there was a different outcome. It's unfortunate its controversies conflicted with it and if you dont know what I mean you can look it up about the mixed receptions it received compared to Hurt Locker. Both are well-deserving in my opinion though and I'm sure if nominated seperate years they both wouldve received their fair share of recognition.

This film still holds its power 7 years later. It is (along with Bigelow's other 21st century film, "Zero Dark 30") one of the great films of this still young century.

Dude... The sound in The Hurt Locker was frigging amazing and the editing fit the style of Bigelow's directing flawlessly. So yeah I think it deserved every award it got. I think the script of the film in particular is ingenious because it deals with something that's really happening to soldiers mentally: Getting hooked on war. No one has dared to speak up about it in the way Mark Boal did. District 9, even though it is really good and I liked it, is overrated in my honest opinion.

I love Inglorious Basterds, watched Avatar like 4 times in the cinema when it came out but I felt deeply touched that hurt locker won and I'm not even an american. There is no happy end like in all other movies, there is only life and death and the reality that this movie is based on.

No one who observed the critics awards that year really expected Avatar to win this or the Director Oscar. The Hurt Locker almost swept the Critics Awards, the only real threat could have been Up in the Air. Avatar has good effects, that's it. In the end Avatar is a much worse Dances with Wolves.

For everyone complaining or otherwise being confused about Tom Hanks not listing the nominees, this ceremony is part of a recent format change during which the nominees are actually listed and highlighted in installments throughout the entire ceremony. This is necessary because of the increased number of best picture nominees; in the traditional presentation of best picture, back when there were only like 6 best picture nominees, nominee announcements were accompanied by short clips of those films---which would be long af today with 10+ nominees. By highlighting the nominees here and there throughout the ceremony, you can just skip to the announcement of the winner at the end.

I literally just watched Hurt Locker for the first time, and was blown away. Literally open mouthed and could not take my eyes off the screen. Those incredibly slo mo moments of explosions... the acting... and the tension was almost unbearable. I'm so glad Katherine told the story of this - it was a masterful, HUMAN story. So sweet to see the crazy excitement of the three main leads when they won the Oscar 😁😁

So glad that The Hurt Locker did. The only thing that shocks me is that Avatar was even considered a frontrunner. I though worthy contenders to The Hurt Locker were Up in the air, District 9, Precious, and Inglourious Basterds. That's just my opinion though. I still think the Academy made the right decision this year. Great acting, suspenseful, emotional. Not just a bunch of special effects
