    "The scene where the "DALLAS" is shown "leaping" out of the water is actually USS HOUSTON just outside the Straits of Juan Defuca, 600 yards off the Starboard side of a US Frigate, conducting an intentional full speed emergency blow that was practiced 6 times to get the timing and positioning right for the 6 cameras arrayed on the surface warship. Each practice was done without an actual emergency blow, the submarine "drove" to the surface. On the final run the HOUSTON alerted the crew 1 minute before actually initiating the emergency blow. Positioning was done without the benefit of GPS, which was not available." trivia

    On a side note, the XO of the Dallas should have been short listed for his own command after this. The utter BALLS to slide your sub DIRECTLY BEHIND another sub without hitting it considering that ALL your navigation is done using only charts and sonar, for the sole purpose of INTENTIONALLY getting a LIVE torpedo on your tail, succeed in it, then SUCCESSFULLY evade that torpedo. Its a shame the entire Op was classified, so few people unaware of the MASSIVE BRASS BALLS of that XO.

    Greer knew, and he’d make sure Thompson got his due. I don’t think the books mention Thompson again, but (spoiler alert), Mancuso gets promoted to COMSUBPAC and then eventually to CINCPAC, so if Greer didn’t, Mancuso eventually would. Knowing Bart, he’d have his former shipmates from Dallas in key places.

    I think the XO is also mentioned as being a CO in Red Storm Rising. Right after the Russians invade Iceland it shows the message going out from both Atlantic and Pacific Command to all Navy ships to immediately begin unrestricted warfare and sink all Russian ships. I think Thompson is CO of a different sub in one of the short stories in that involving submarine warfare and if I remember correctly his boat destroys 3 Alfas and 2 Akula submarines along with several Soviet Destroyers and Cruisers. As a Marine Corps Vet while I love Red October Red Storm Rising is one of my favorites as it shows a non nuclear war between NATO and the Soviets/Warsaw Pact. Another one of my absolute favorites is The Bear and The Dragon. That is where China invaded Russia right after the collapse of Communism and the Soviet Union to steal its minerals and oil in Siberia and The US aligns with Russia and invites it to join NATO so that China has to fight Russia and the US. Phenomenal Story. Tom Clancy has always been one of my favorite authors and I read all his stuff up until the stuff put out by his estate that used other writers starting in the late and early 2000s. I was born in Baltimore where he lived until his death. He also was a minority owner of the Baltimore Orioles baseball team

    it's the pace as well, he had to keep the action going.. so things were condensed so the layman could comprehend it.. Seeing a torpedo chase an American sub 3000 yards off her stern , the audience would see just the blackness of the sea from the fish's vantage, but danger close from the subs crew's vantage.. plus the timing was condensed to seconds instead of minutes.. situational awareness, reaction times, etc just don't take 3 min 43 sec.. ..Hollywood stuff, but we get the gyst.. in fact in the book it's a collision that kills the alpha as you know.. much more likely and better use of Octobers immense bulk ( though titanium is pretty tough, maybe shoddy soviet welding saved the day?).. either way, good observation.. It's guys like Lockwood, Gunther Prien, Morton, O'kene , and a host of Jap U boat skippers that hauled huge brass ones behind their boats.. Otto Kretschmer comes to mind too.. Doenitz himself pulled off a doozy or 2 in ww1.. American accomplishments are too many to mention, Cavallah, Dace n Darter, Nautilus ? Barb hitting a train anyone ? lots of material to make a good movie from ...

    The Alpha class is an extremely fast submarine, capable of about 40+kts, while the Typhoon (Akula in Russia) isn't the fastest submarine in the world, they aren't a slouch either at 27kts. Red October might be slightly faster thanks to her Caterpillar Drive, but no more than maybe 32kts. Either way, the best case isn't to far off from your estimate (77kts), and a thing to remember is that these are estimated distances, not actual distances.

    Soviet submarines are infamously durable things, cast-titanium triple-hulls make a sub quite durable (yeah, the Soviets were able to cast titanium so effectively they made it look like they're casting steel). A Typhoon would be one of the many subs with this sort of hull, as well as the Alfa. It should be noted that Soviet torpedoes have more boom than their NATO counterparts, likely due to the fact that they've assumed that NATO could cast titanium as well as they did...

    The torpedo was locked on the Red October, but the Dallas pulled between the Red October and the torpedo getting it to lock on Dallas and draw the torpedo away at least temporarily. They then used an emergency blow and countermeasures to pull away quickly and throw off the torpedo.

    Yes. The Torpedo’s sonar is looking for anything it can get a solid return off of. The Dallas interposing itself caused the torp to lock onto it instead. Presented with a new big target, the torpedo pursues it relentlessly, having lost sight of the red October.

  • @FloatyBones77

    @FloatyBones77

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@dmmchugh3714 the countermeasures are bubbling because they are noisemakers. The bubbling action creates a strong localized noise source and confuses the Torpedo, much as jamming does to radar. Most torpedoes are programmed to either circle around or go through the noisemaker and reacquire the target. In this case the Dallas fired the noisemaker as it began the Emergency Blow, and the torpedo lost lock and sought out the noisemaker and dove through it. By surfacing, the Dallas took advantage of the fact that most torpedoes have poor vertical detection and exited its sonar envelope before it could begin a new search pattern.

    It was a part of the plan. The crew of the Dallas knew what Mr. Thompson’s plan was. Since the Dallas could not fire on the Russian attack sub, Mr. Thompson figured the best way to help Red October, with the Dallas’ Commanding Officer and best Sonar-man on board, was to pull the Russian torpedo away from the Red October then drop counter measures and full-blow.

Next time READ CLANCY'S BOOK, if you know what a book is! These are not fighter-jets in the air, launching chaffs & flares, to get rid of a missile and a modern torpedo is not an IR-guided "Sidewinder". These are submarines - especially a beast like the "Typhoon"-class - will not enact those manouvers in seconds, like shown here - it will take them many minutes just to make a simple TURN - sometimes HOURS, so if you don't get irony - please! - keep the trap shut, 'cause the only fool here is you. 😂 PS. Personally if I were Ramius, I would feint surrender, intend to pull up along side, then put the pedal to the medal and smash her before he can get moving..
