Just the way this scene builds up to the mayhem we know is about to unfold, the way the tension is built, then released, is masterful. That and how direct, simple, and powerful Denzel's moves are throughout makes it all the more vicious, and how he saved the bearded henchman for last to really make him suffer with those corkscrews...yikes. Denzel is a fantastic action movie lead and he is just golden.

Easily the best fighting scene of this type ever made. It's also the gratification, the whole build up to it makes anyone really hate these arrogant thugs, in our minds we see everyone who's ever treated us badly or wrong or arrogantly abused their power against us, it's primal, so when he unleashes it's one of the most gratifying scenes to watch, a pure angel of vengeance in all it's glory descending on the wicked.. It's really extraordinary, one of Antoine Fuqua's best scenes ever.

One of my favorite bits in this scene is the part where Robert is constantly opening and closing the door, symbolizing his internal battle with himself. He wants to remain true to the promise he made to his late wife that he won't walk this violent path anymore, but these gangsters have proven themselves to be so despicable that he can't stand the thought of just letting them walk.

  • @misterexclusive8282

I felt it was to ritualistic to simply be an internal battle. too precise movements to be a struggle. I felt it was something like ocd. much like him counting the seconds of the encounter, adding up the time it actually took. it was all extremely methodical, and i thought the opening and the closing of the door was the same. very similar to people with ocd who do things like turn lights on and off 3 times before shutting them off completely.

Moving the skulls is basically warning the Russians in advance, forewarning, that shit's about to get real. That's a good point about how his action at the door reflects some internal dialogue or indecision as he tries to decide whether to walk away or exact some justice on these thugs for what they've done and are doing. Like other things in his life, it also reflects his thoughtfulness and precision, as he waits for the right moment to start the meting out of justice and then collects himself as he observes various elements around the room that will play a role in his destruction of each thug. He has an intense focus combined with supreme confidence that allows him to relax and execute what he intends to do.

Though I have never seen the movies, I love these outtakes just like I do the ones from John Wick. Wildly implausible, physically totally impossible and legally unjustifiable, each fight is a catharsis of vengeance for everyman and everywoman everywhere. But it is just Hollywood. A quick fix of impossible feats of fighting and heroism, then quickly back to reality... Sort of like the Marvel Cinematic Universe. A guilty pleasure of violent choreography. Then back to washing the dishes and folding the laundry. :)

it's not, this is just for the movie. In reality, he would be dead, because this close combat area, with weapons and guns, could not be predicted in any way. Also, in reality, physics are the same for everyone. It's not like the other guys move in slow motion or do exactly what it's predicted, while Denzel move in light speed. There a many goofs in the scene, a trained close combat personal would never do. For instance, the guy with the gun, why should he go into distance? Just shoot him in the back, that's it. Or the guy at the desk, why he has no gun at his desk. He is in the position, where he must count on such situation, so a gun should be obligatory.
