The re-creation of the sub for the movie is at the Hunley museum in Charleston! I went this last summer to tour the museum and it is a fabulous museum/research facility.

Me and my kids and my wife went there in Charleston in 2011. The submarine HL Hundley of the Confederate States and even my wife was amazed and proud will the amazing display of heroism buy these men. I was proud and humbled and amazed will the first enemy submarine in the history of the world!

What a bummer they blocked the video from yesterday. I know you’ve been working to get it posted.

My brother (Charles D. Stringer) was an extra in "The Hunley". He played one of the surviving casualties from one of the Hunley's sinkings. He was a bone cancer survivor, and had a leg amputated above the knee while he was still in grade school, so there was no need to conceal the lower half of a leg for him to portray an amputee!

Chicken Tikka Masala 1.5 lbs chicken breast cut into small pieces 3/4 cup plain yogurt Juice of 1/2 lemon 4 cloves garlic, minced 1 tablespoon ginger, grated Spices: 1 teaspoon each: salt, cumin, garam masala, ground coriander, turmeric, kasuri methi (dried fenugreek leaves), kashmiri chili Toss ingredients together and marinate for at least an hour. Tikka Masala: Oil for cooking 1 onion, diced 4 cloves garlic, minced 1 tablespoon ginger, grated Spices: 1 teaspoon each: salt, cumin, garam masala, ground coriander, ground turmeric, kasuri methi (dried fenugreek leaves), kashmiri chili, sugar 2 (8 oz) tomato sauce 3/4 cup heavy cream Chicken broth as needed Cilantro for garnish Into a skillet add some oil and sear the chicken for 2 minutes on each side. Do it in batches to prevent overcrowding the pan. Remove from skillet, add a bit more oil and sautee the onion for 4 minutes, add the minced garlic, ginger and spices. After a minute add the tomato sauce and chicken back into the pan. Lower heat, cover and cook for 10 minutes or until the chicken is completely done. Add heavy cream and chicken broth if mixture is too thick. Serve with rice and garnish with cilantro@@andrewc6602

Armand Assante and Donald Sutherland... seriously high caliber acting names... they did stellar jobs in their roles... in fact, the whole cast turned in great performances.

Absolutely fantastic video. I watched this movie around the time it came out and as a Civil War buff, really enjoyed it. But I really enjoyed the discourse in this video that captures the more modern findings on the Hunley - absolutely fascinating. Thank you so much for posting this!

This may well be becoming my favorite KZread channel. As a kid growing up in Sumter County, GA in the late 90's, this, and "Andersonville" (also TNT film), were near childhood obsessions for me. Very well done gentlemen! The movie was fairly accurate, for being created as a 'for' profit' entertainment project by 'the mouth of the South'. Just a few points if I may ... I agree completely with your assessment of Mark K. Regan's work. With regards to the 'H. L. HUNLEY', he has no peers. Referencing Mark, the movie suggests that Captain Hunley was not experienced in commanding the sub, 'What was Captain Hunley thinking? I think he wanted to prove he could operate her'. Mark provides two points that argue against the supposition that Horace was not experienced commanding her. Knowing that in the early days of pioneering invention, it was quite common for the inventors themselves to first operate their inventions (Wright brothers for instance) and as far as even assisting 'hands-on' in her construction, Horace was very involved in all aspects of the sub. So Mark points out that it would not be uncommon to see Horace in the conning tower, commanding the sub in Mobile. Also he provides an example from William Alexanders own documented 'post-war' writings, where Alexander states, "Captain Hunley had become expert in handling her". Alexander wrote this, referencing his being Horace's First Officer during the very first trials of the HUNLEY in Mobile Bay. Also, the film shows Dixon as almost suicidal because he wanted to be reunited with his wife who (in the movie) was killed earlier. In fact, his fiancée who gave him the famous coin, Queenie Bennet is documented to have survived the war and mourned Dixon's sacrifice until her passing. Lastly (you're welcome) though the movie shows the HUNLEY backing away (150-200 feet as designed by Beauregard) before the lanyard triggers the detonation, forensic evidence proved the torpedo exploded upon initial contact with the HOUSATONIC's hull, while still on the spar ... meaning the crew was only about 30ish feet away. The copper sheathing used to mount the torpedo on the iron spar, and designed to come away with the torpedo, was peeled back and still on the spar. The deep draft of the HOUSATONIC, and the harbor bottom only being 30 feet down, means this would Greatly intensify the shock wave reverberated back into the sub. Lance's experiments (as shown by you) did not account for this resonate phenomenon. (Lagniappe - the snorkel worked as designed. The compass was so inaccurate that the captain could not keep a true course. It was necessary to breach occasionally to correct bearing-to-target. It obviously became an opportune time to open the hatches and rapidly exchange the air instead of laboring at working the bellows.) Keep up the good work! Respectfully, ^v^

I distinctly remember this made for TV movie when it came out. I loved it then and its been so long since I had seen it. Thank you for reminding me of this little treasure.

I saw a documentary (Mythbusters, I think) that explored the fate of the Hunley. To demonstrate the power of a concussive shockwave, they set off two M-80 charges next to two sealed mayonnaise jars; one in the air and one underwater. The jar in the air just had a loud BANG next to it and was unharmed. The one underwater was pulverized.

I truly enjoyed IN THE WAVES, and I am glad that you reference that work in your coverage of this film. Thank you for that!

enjoyed this video. you are right this movie seems to have remained unknown to so many people's knowledge. You mentioned that you went sat inside a mock-up of the Hunley at Fort Moultrie at one time? Everything is now located at the Hunley Conservatory on the old Navy Base in Charleston where the Hunley was brought to when it was recovered. Now a permanent home, they have that section of the Hunely you speak of in the museum section. I believe that was actually used to film the movie as a set. The sub that was filmed on the surface of the water is sitting behind the SC State Museum rusting away. Those sequences showing that vessel were filmed at Lake Marion. I remember when this was being filmed by TNT, had some friends who were in that movie as background actors. I was on set at the back end of Magnolia Cemetery the day they were filming the field hospital scene, it was magnificent ! While there I also saw Donald Sutherland in full uniform in between takes. He looked right at me and I wanted so bad to take some photographs but did not as it is one of the quickest ways to get thrown off of the set. Anyway, I have vivid memories. It is "underrated" for sure. It is about as good as Hollywood will ever make a Docu-Drama. It should have been released on the big screen, I think that is one reason is remains so unknown. I also watched your hike on Iwo Jima, never been there but the history of it was engrained in me at Parris Island.

Keep in mind, too, that while the Hunley was being excavated, the crew remains were all found to be at their individual stations, no mixing of remains nor all piled near either of the hatches. This could evidence a sudden death from a shockwave or something similar to what the movie depicts.

Sorry, but we will never know if there was chaos in the submarine b/c there was no room for each crew member to move. They were basically shoulder to shoulder and entered and left the vessel one at a time so I do not believe panic was not there in the end.

Thank you gentlemen. I recall seeing "The Great Adventure" TV episode in the 1960s about the HL Hunley. It spooked me. I looked it up and there were numerous famous actors in this show. Jackie Cooper, Van Heflin, even a young Wayne Rodgers. I didn't remember the actors, just the story.

​@@Redwhiteblue-gr5em I had nightmares about the Hunley crew surviving, going on more successful missions, breaking the blockade, gaining sovereign recognition from somewhere, that 'somewhere' moderating peace talks followed by church bells pealing throughout the south as the new dixie nation celebrates its constitutionally protected right to negro slavery. Then I get flogged. I wake up after the first lash.

I wonder if they haven't already, but it would be interesting if they reacted to the 1991 movie ironclads, which tells the story of the battle of Hampton Roads, and both ironclads that took part in the famous battle. It would be interesting too see your take on it.

I will grant that Donald might have been a bit old to play Beauregard, but BOY, did they resemble each other.

Good movie!

Finally caught the video before it sinks without trace again. Or not, as the case may be...

Civil War history is just so incredibly important. Especially now as our country seems so divided, we should remember mistakes of the past lest we repeat them!

The Hunley Museum in Charleston is wonderful and has the actual set piece from the movie there. You can get in it and try and crank the propeller. Fantactic place to visit.

This was exceptional. I don't believe I've seen this film in over 20 years. I definitely remember connecting to it in a similar fashion as earlier grand Civil War epics such as Glory or Gettysburg.

So that's why I can't find my comments!

I noticed on the cover of the book, "Submarine Warfare in the Civil War", that there was a foreword by Clive Cussler, the Author and Co-Author of the NUMA adventure fiction books. I think I read, that he and his non-profit naval wreck organization had a part in locating and raising of the HL Hunley, as well as other civil war and Texas National Navy ships. If this is true, he and his organization should be given credit for their efforts.
