The Hungry Ghost Realm: A Buddhist Teaching of Hope in Addiction

All channel income from October 31-November 30, 2021 will be donated to To Write Love On Her Arms to help the Hungry Ghosts around us every day. Thank you for supporting an organization that helps those who are struggling.
We each have a Hungry Ghost inside of us; if you or someone you love is struggling, please reach out to a professional. Many great organizations, including ‪@TWLOHA‬ are filled with people trained and willing to help.
The Realm of Hungry Ghosts is a Buddhist afterlife marked by suffering and dependency. The journey of one of the Buddha's disciples, Maudgalyayana, to this realm provides a first step for how to break the vicious cycles of addiction and trauma.
Mythos & Logos are two ancient words that can be roughly translated as “Story & Meaning.”

By helping the hungry ghosts, we stop ourselves from becoming them. This touched me so deeply. I live my life in service. After battling addiction, service keeps me from returning to the hungry ghost realm.

Im trapped in the cycle of addiction and a desperate hungry ghost, ive never been this bad before, its terrifying as I have been into tibetan Buddhism, gabor mate, all kinds of good knowledge and healing, but im deeply ashamed of the state im in and how much ive neglected every aspect of my life. Im terrified of the withdrawals and I've burnt all my bridges this time. I don't eat for weeks at a time. I just hope that i can free myself somehow

Special thanks to my friend Alex for introducing me to the Hungry Ghosts, and the Buddhism community on the Garden of Eden Discord server for teaching me about the relevant scripture. Shout outs to Religion For Breakfast's recent video on Buddhism and Doug's Dharma (both on KZread) for great overviews of a tradition with which I would love to become more familiar.

I really enjoyed this a lot. You are a great presenter. I recently read an article about these scrolls that you show here. They're in the Kyoto National Museum. They don't say who the original artist is but it's interesting how wide spread buddhism was around the year 1,000. It was interesting to have the sutra reference in your video. Thanks!

It is interesting (coming from a Catholic raising) that the Buddhist hells (or the reincarnation cycle in general) serve as Purgatories in a sense. I would love to hear some Orthodox connections if you would like to share :)

Great question! Some sources tell of the Hungry Ghosts living in the same places as us, but invisible. There is one image from Tripitaka of the Hungry Ghosts gathered by a river, drinking the water kicked up by people’s shoes. Others may wait near a table to try and pick up scraps. They can be anywhere, unnoticed.

Gratitude 🩷 I saw my son in this realm in a dream is that possible? although he's here in the physical, mentally he hasn't been this year has been tough, The dream was 6 months prior I didn't understand it but knew it was important. This was profoundly helpful because I want to help him and I'm also working on my own issues. I'm on the journey of enlightenment and correcting the wrongs isn't easy but will keeping moving forward and thank you so much🙏
