The reason the wheels are as wide as a tank's tracks is so the tank would set off any land mines first. HMMWV wheels being the same width wouldn't drive anywhere the tank hadn't. So it wouldn't hit any land mines placed between.

Geoff knows his stuff, but things the wizard should check (more for the benefit of new owners who don't know anything about these trucks): 1) SPINDLE NUTS!!!! I recommend every new H1 owner replace them with the Bluehummer/MM/Stage 8 Locking Spindle nuts. The stock nuts are fine - IF they're properly installed and, well, they're not easy to install and most shops don't know how to install them. You got your truck from someone who knows his stuff, but I still would put the locking spindle nuts on just to be safe. If your spindle nuts come off while on the highway your tires WILL FLY OFF AND MAYBE HURT/KILL SOMEONE. 2) Check the compression. 3) Your ABS/TT4 code is *probably* a bad shuttle valve in the modulator. Thankfully its the same ABS unit as out of a Land Rover Discovery from the same era so they're plentiful (but expensive). If its the 2-6 blink code when you jump pins 4 and 15 then its a 99% chance its just the shuttle valve internal solder that died. You can re-connect it externally easily and save yourself thousands of dollars while making the modulator more robust. 4) Check for proper vaccum pump. It should be pulling a ridiculous amount of vacuum, something like 22 inches or something. If its not then your blend door actuators wont work and your turbo wastegate controller will die. 5) I fought my leaky A/C for months. Turned out it was the service port manifold every time. But if its the expansion valve behind the front passenger tire then be prepared for a VERY pissed off Wizard because they are a PITA to replace. 6) Get the water pump bypass restrictor fitting that helps the water pump achieve balanced flow and replace the fan clutch while you're in there. I could go on for pages but that'll be a good start.

Your buying a Hummer brings back memories of my time as a wheeled vehicle mechanic in the Army, particularly of my time in Korea. One thing I recall was replacing blown 6.2 liter engines because they weren't meant to do over about 50 without a overdrive, and the ones there at the time didn't have that. We did at least 60 in a vain attempt to keep up with Korean traffic, like the Cadillac STS with local plates (not the ones given to military personnel) that absolutely ran off screaming from us. I was there at the end of the last century. I never drank like that before, or frankly, after. Good times... Oh, and one more thing. Running over Priuses? Sounds like weak sauce to me. Doug at least managed to run over an Audi with his Land Rover.

The best description of a Hummer that I ever saw was "an Isuzu truck in a party dress". This from the country that made your magnificent Stingray. Talk about going from the sublime to the ridiculous. Musically it's like going from blues to rap.

I know that the Wizard will love that ride. As a previous owner of 6.2/6.5 Detroit diesels, the electronic injection pump would fail and the PMD which was cooled by the injection pump would suffer early failures. The heads would form cracks between the valves, the bottom end was very prone to failures. This was corrected with the optimizer 6500 block by AM General which had more Molybdenum, making for a much stronger block and heads. After that you have a motor that banks can add power to.

Glad you're putting another old Hummer back on the road. For what they lack in practicality, they make up for in character. There really is nothing else like it on the road. Obviously not a daily driver but WoW what a cool ride for a cruise now and then. Maybe you could drive on some rough off-road places once it's all sorted. Hope you and the Wiz can get it back to it's former self! Or Cummins swap to make even better than it ever was!

In case anyone is wondering, it is also called Bimetallic Corrosion when you mix Steel or Aluminum which will create an active Cathode/Anode setup. If someone would make a NEW VERSION of this HUMVEE style but totally made of Carbon Fibre Composite and have a high-torque Cummins Diesel with a BIG long-range fuel tank it would be truly fantastic off-roader/overlander/boondocker vehicle! v

I like how much Hoovie appreciates these, but one thing is that he should differentiate between the HMMWV and the HUMMER. The military ones are not so nice at all. They lack any comforts in the interior and the engines are purely mechanical with the only electrical component needed to run being the battery. No computer to fry if hit with an EMP. Basically tho they are the same vehicle underneath. Probably the most rugged thing you fill find made by AMC. LOL

The width had nothing to do with tank tracks (Jeremy Clarkson made this "fact" up). It was made just wide enough to fit through the narrowest train tunnel in Europe since it was designed to be a support vehicle during a Soviet land invasion of Europe. Also, the Ford Raptor and TRX have wider track widths FWIW.

While I've heard the comment before regarding the HMMWV/H1 width based upon tank tracks - I'm not thinking that is the case: An M1 Abrams is 12' wide, and the Bradly M2/M3 are 10.5' wide. Truck aint going to be following those tracks very well. The width of the HMMWV is really determined by the drivetrain components tucked up high in the cabin for ground clearance, plus just a bit of room for a Driver and Passenger. That passenger side is cramped as you noticed. BTW, I drive my yellow 1999 H1 soft-top nearly every day. Love it.

Enjoyed the video, certainly an eye-catching vehicle 👍 I am curious though, it’s clear what uses the Hummer is not appropriate for - shopping, car parks, congested streets etc but not so clear what the use is that IS appropriate for it in a non-military environment that Hoovie kept referring to? I can imagine it being used as a alt-type limo for proms etc (as you often see them here in the UK) but I’m struggling with anything else that could not be done by a less-wieldy, cheaper pick-up type vehicle?
