I think if the older generation that got to earth could raise the babies to adulthood then it might be possible.

@Phantaplex This is me thinking out loud, but would the sandstorms also showcase just how bad the soil is? I forget about finding water. OOOOOH, it's going to be tough for them.

@@angryferb1079 Let's just cross our fingers that the robots can raise them to have common sense and a basic understanding of their surroundings. If that happens then maybe there's a chance!

I remember hearing this question is why they added the images of the humans successfully rebuilding during the credits. Apparently the test audiences all left with the impression that the humans were all going to die within a generation. Considering the captain wanted to plant a pizza like it was a seed for a plant, I honestly felt the same way when I watched too. I don't know why I hadn't considered how badly their physical state would mess them up. So they're not only mentally unprepared, but they'd be physiologically wrecked too.

It's nice to see them doing well in the credits! It's nice to see robots helping them. But at the same time, it seems like a lost cause. Probably should have gone to some other planet and started from scratch there.

And now they need to struggle to survive war and conflict will most likely happen again. The film depicted an utopia without material scarcity without war and struggling as dystopian and depicted a grim ending as a happy one. I always found that rather odd even as a child.

I always felt one of the points of the movie, is that life isn’t even close to being as weak as we are lead to believe it is.

I always thought the end credits explained how generation after generation, the humans and robots came together and made Earth more sustainable again. So yeah, in a way, they did survive.

Another big factor is how the Axiom landed back on Earth. First of all, that ship is ridiculously enormous that when it was landing it shook nearby buildings and broke glass. When the of the city and the Axiom shows, you can see the Axiom in the background, covering the view. Second of all, those support beams. Those have had to be made from like dark matter or something b/c the fact that it could hold something that weighs as much as half of New York is mad impressive. And when you see the Axiom landing on the beams, according to the laws of Physics there is NO way that ship would have stayed still on that platform, even if it did the winds would knock it down. The landing trench would have been covered in trash due to 700+ years of neglect as well. Nevertheless I believe that superliminal travel is possible, just, not now.

Now that you mentioned it... how much does that space ship even weigh? And how was it able to sustain 700 years of space travel without breaking down? All that radiation in space would probably eat away at it.

Auto is just following the directive from the CEO. The CEO's last command was to take control and not return to earth. This movie really pumps Auto as the villain when it was the inaction of the previous generation that screwed humanity over. I feel that shot of portraits of Auto getting closer to the captain showing them as the villain was a mistake. Having Auto as a villain is exciting for the grand final, but it makes us forget the real villain is the inaction of people allowing Earth to fall into ruin. I agree with the top comment, they had a test audience that said that Wall-E's humans were doomed and had to add in a credit scene showing them surviving to solidify a happy end, rather than rewrite the silent film robot movie to incorporate more human characters caring about Earth. (and I'm fine with that for I love the silent film robot movie)

Smaller point but relevant. Looking at screens all the time would cause the humans to all be substantially myopic which would pose a problem in their endeavours too

I think what frustrates me the most is that they don't have a plan before going back to Earth. At some point, they can go back, but they should take some steps to educate on what they're getting themselves into. Insisted on jumping right into it.
