I don't think it's too controversial to say that Disney Star Wars and Lucasfilm has largely been going downhill since the release of The Rise of Skywalker. The studio seems more interested in nostalgia pandering and selling merchandise than it does telling truly compelling and worthwhile stories in the Star Wars canon. The Mandalorian may have started off promising, but it soon divulged into legacy character cameos the series. Same can be said for the wildly uneven and fundamentally broken The Book of Boba Fett which didn't even care enough about it's central protagonist that it had to bring in Mando, Baby Yoda, Luke Skywalker and crew to hijack the series. This now brings us to Obi-Wan Kenobi...the project that everyone's been asking for for years and Lucasfilm finally granted our wish...or did they? You see, for as great as it is to see Ewan McGregor, Hayden Christensen, Jimmy Smits, and company back in their iconic roles giving it everything they got...the overall direction of the series is nothing short of a colossal disappointment. It's not even that the broad strokes of Kenobi were bad! I ultimately liked what happened with Obi-Wan's journey - grief-stricken, filled with guilt, grappling with his faith - I just which the story they told was more introspective and character focus rather than plot-focused. I also wish that Disney in its unlimited resources would actually spend the time and money to make these Star Wars shows LOOK PREMIUM! There's no reason why the Obi-Wan Kenobi series should look like a fan film. For every massive high, the Obi-Wan show had about 3 worse lows. It's disappointingly uneven, simultaneously feeling like it's overlong, and not long enough. You also can't help but feel like we missed out on a real opportunity for Lucasfilm to make this a movie! This is a story that deserves the big screen treatment and the filmmaking upgrades that come along with it. Ultimately, Obi-Wan Kenobi isn't awful, but it really isn't all that good either, and that in and of itself simply isn't good enough for what should've been the crowning jewel of Disney Star Wars. Griffin (@griffschiller) gives you his Obi-Wan Kenobi review and explains why Obi-Wan Kenobi is a disappointment, how obi-wan kenobi failed, and the problem with Obi-Wan Kenobi. Enjoy this Obi-Wan Kenobi analysis!

I am with you on the overall idea some things worked, but there was too much going on. The main point of the refugees was to demonstrate how Obi-Wan regains his confidence in protection again. However, that was fulfilled by Leia being a part of the show. Thus, here is my rewrite of the second half: So, instead, what if Reva still finds Leia and we end episode III thinking everything is doomed. But then, to open episode IV, Leia uses her wits to escape, and she, Obi-Wan, and Tala get back to their ship just before Reva and Vader reach them. Every episode from the rest of IV-VI is a chase back to Alderaan. You can have Reva and Vader chase them down and get closer every episode, only for Obi-Wan, Leia, and Tala to escape at the last second. In episode V, you can still have Reva fight Vader and fly to Tatooine to kill Luke for revenge. You can still have Tala sacrifice herself in some way too. In episode VI, you can still have Obi-Wan and Vader fight (and Obi-Wan doing it to draw Vader out, possibly as Vader chases him and Leia on-planet), but not on a random planet--instead in the streets of Alderaan, and here, Obi-Wan fights Vader to protect Leia and buy her time while also protecting everyday civilians. This fulfills the same position in the story as the refugees, but it ties into everything in a far more satisfying way. After Obi-Wan defeats Vader, he races to Tatooine to protect Luke. Owen and Beru could be doing something else and not come, so it is up to Obi-Wan to protect Luke. Now, why am I not having Owen and Beru protect Luke? That goes to Bale and Breha to protect Leia. Vader, even in his defeated state, wants to break Obi-Wan (he has indicated that several times in the show), so he attempts to find Leia and kill her. Obviously we know that can't happen, but what if Bail and Breha put themselves in harm's way? We know Bail can't die, but he could come awfully close. Furthermore, since we don't see from Breha in any future films, she could sacrifice herself and not have in affect continuity (though don't kill her, but the real possibility would still be there). So, that could be used for tension. As for Leia being involved, the tension would not be whether she survives, but what will happen to Obi-Wan if he returns to find Vader holding her hostage/torturing her. Also, dramatic irony could be invoked in all of this, since we know Leia is Vader's daughter, but be doesn't know that. Meanwhile, things play out with Reva in a similar way, but Obi-Wan duels her in the process and wins. She is redeemed, but this time with added weight. Furthermore, since episodes IV-VI would comprise a lot of their time for chase scenes in space, this could allow for added introspection, furthering what we saw in the first half of the series. Those quieter moments could be used to the show's advantage while having a dreadful ticking clock of Vader and Reva closing in on them. Things end exactly the same way as it did in the finale, but with far more cohesion between the two halves.

I have zero issues with the actress but I have no idea why this show focused so heavily on Reva. When you look at the show in hindsight, everything she was doing could have been done by Vader instead which would have also fleshed out his character more.

I think they needed a character that wasn't Vader because his awareness of her intent for betrayal, coupled with Palpatine's veiled threat at the end to cease the practice of dueling his old master, do a lot to set up why Vader is so subservient to the Emperor rather than ever taking his shot at his new master, and is instead so intent on finding someone to help him do it. He knows doing on his own would fail because of his experience with Reva. But it does suck they couldn't give her more compelling things to do before she fulfilled that role. Also, she was after the Skywalker kids, and Vader just isn't supposed to know about them yet, so it would break canon if it was him.

@red racer It was bad and copied dude The camera angles were terrible and didn't feel as Star Wars at all The music, do you even remember it? Was dull and generic And again, the entire scene was a straight copy from the season 2 ending of Rebels Even the scene contradicts itself with other episode of THE SAME SERIES!!!! Remember? "I am what you made me" 3 Doritos later..... "I am not your failure Obi-Wan, I killed Anakin" What the hell???? Are the writers stup!d? The entire series is made with stup!d plots or think the audience is stup!d How Vader turns off the fire, to 3 seconds later can't do it, how Vader grabs a ship, to 3 seconds later can't do it Or Obi-Wan hiding Leia under the coat and nobody noticing it? lol what the hell is this show??? The entire saga is: -Leia is kidnaped -need time to escape -Leia is kidnaped (again) -need time to escape (again) -Final episode, a copy of Rebels season 2 ending So.... what was the series about? What was it purpose? What added to the other movies? Even why the hell they treated Obi-Wan as a traumatized man? In episode III was clear he was hurts but not traumatized Obi-Wan was a character built up to choose duty above all, he lost her loved one, he sees Maul kill her in front of his eyes, yet he continues with his duty Disney doesn't understand the characters Obi-Wan was on Tatooine to take care of Luke, not because he was traumatized Is the same sh*t they did for Luke If you liked the series is because you don't care Disney gives you the mid finger, because you don't understand the characters, don't care about plot holes and you are easily impressed by nostalgia

*"...after more than fifteen years of waiting...."* Honestly, for me, that's one of the larger problems. It's pretty common that fandoms just want _more_ of their beloved franchise, but storytellers need to understand there are always going to be limits and necessities for their IPs. One of the best examples I can mention when it comes to an IP that was insanely creative, ultimately limited in its story scope, but forced into a bloated and artificially-expanded franchise is Jurassic Park. Not even The Lost World was a necessary addition, though it fits with the narrative, contrasts enough with its predecessor, and, of course, had its own Crichton-penned source material, but everything beyond that has proven to be an (inconsistently) entertaining, but ultimately increasingly lackluster and derivative tacked on continuation. Kenobi is no different. If this show had to exist, it honestly would've been far more appropriate to have it function as a quieter character study. The character moments between Obi-Wan and Leia were fine, but if he and Anakin were such close friends, there would be a naturally potent kinship he would feel for Anakin's only son.

Who knows what kind of atrocities she's committed in the past, and she's proven more than once to be unstable and a wildcard. He's just endangering Luke by letting her go. Kenobi putting a curbstomp beatdown on Vader is a problem because it totally undermines Luke's story; there isn't any point in Obi-Wan loitering around a cave grooming the Chosen One's son to kill him when he could have done it himself at any time. If he had forced a draw or won through a clever trick that would be one thing, but he just overwhelmed Vader in both duelling skill and Force power. Basically, Vader only even exists in the Original Trilogy now because Kenobi -- the true Chosen One, apparently -- didn't feel like executing him in this series. This refusal to kill Vader is inconsistent with both the Original Trilogy, where Kenobi encourages Luke to take him out, and Episode III, where Kenobi callously leaves Anakin to burn to death after lopping off his arm and legs. He'll happily kill Anakin right after he turned but not the much darker "Darth" who he believes has replaced his former padawan?? Stupid all around.

Not really because Palpatine would still be there- and the whole point of the Jedi going into Isolation was on side the empire, because they made alot of ridiculous mistakes they in their hubris had to come to terms with. At least the remaining. Luke arc still remains significant after this because Obi Wan had to get rid this guilt to provide the best guiding training to Luke, and the combination of Obi Wan/Yoda experiences and spending the Isolation understanding their mistakes makes Luke pushing Vader to fulfilling the Prophecy through pure selfless Jedi approach that much more realized and poignant

I think the biggest problems are canon inconsistencies and bad overall writing. Also, why did reva want to kill Luke? She has no reason to believe that he and Vader are related, and yet it’s framed as her taking revenge against him??? What? It would have made way more sense for her to go after Luke for revenge against obi wan for abandoning her to fight Vader alone. And that’s just one problem with the writing that’s really only the tip of the iceberg. The show was surface level fun, but beyond that it has serious issues that prevent me from truly appreciating it. Heck, even the lightsaber choreography in the final episode looked way too staged to me, and I’m not that picky usually. Still better than book of boba fett at least.

Star wars is at its best when it's about the relationships between the characters. The problem with Kenobi is easily identified, it's not about Obi-Wan Kenobi. The whole show should have been the dynamic between Obi-Wan and Vader and the ramifications of what happened between them. Instead we got another Disney bait and switch, with the promise of a character we know being used to push on us a character we've never seen and frankly couldn't care less about. That's without considering the glaring script mistakes and potholes that the show introduces besides

Even if you loved the duels etc. how does one overlook the fact that, just like The Rise of Skywalker (which ret-conned Vader being foretold to destroy the Sith, essentially RUINING his entire character arc) this show retcons Ep IV A New Hope. In that film Leia clearly doesn't know who Obi Wan is when she records her SoS. Also Luke is shown to have lived a boring farm boy's life, that of one who has definitely never seen anyone wielding a lightsaber. Are the two of them, especially Leia who is often portrayed to have the mental acuity of a high IQ adult, gonna suddenly forget these events? Seriously, fuck this show and fuck Disney SW.

actually the prophecy never said anything about destroying the sith and that being how to bring balance to the force. That was how the jedi perceived the prophecy but Anakin and even Sidious viewed the prophecy completely differently. Sidious saw the balance to the force as the Jedi and the Light had dominated the galaxy for 1000 years and Anakin brought balance by now allowing the dark side and the Sith to now dominate the galaxy. It still blows my fucking mind that people think that the most powerful sith lord that ever lived who manipulated the entire galaxy, wiped out the jedi and republic, created a galactic empire, turned the jedi's "chosen one" against them etc. would not have a plan B in case he died. Even Ian MacDiarmid didn't think the emperor should have been truly dead after being tossed over the edge. Return of the Jedi and Vader's sacrifice wasn't for nothing for fuck sakes because he turned back to the light Luke got to live! Plus it took down the empire because the emperor was forced to essence transfer into a body that wasn't ready so he was essentially just stuck there decaying and only able to use his immense dark side powers to influence the galaxy from Exogol. Don't get me wrong Rise of Skywalker was shitty and how they ended up killing Sidious for good was even shittier and a slap in the face of the most powerful Sith lord of all time and Ian MacDiarmid.... but people can't seem to grasp that the whole chosen one prophecy "misread could have been" as Yoda even said in episode 3. The Sith had their own chosen one called the Sithari and supposedly it's argued Sidious was the Sithari having a higher midichlorian count than yoda even at 20,000 and wiping out thousands of jedi. People saying that Sidious coming back ruins Vader's redemption seem to forget that if he hadn't redeemed himself Luke would be dead and the emperor would still rule the galaxy for hundreds more years and Vader would have eventually been either killed by Sidious for a better apprentice or die of old age. My point is Anakin's redemption wasn't for nothing just because Sidious came back and bringing balance to the force is just a concept made up by the sith and jedi. there is only the force. The force doesn't technically have just pure dark side abilities or pure light side abilities. The jedi and Sith are just 2 cults that choose to use the force in specific ways. the jedi aren't all corrupted like the sith because the sith bend the force's will to achieve their goals and try to dominate the force.

I made a video talking about how disappointed I was by the show lol idk how I'm "ignoring" it. For me, it makes complete sense that Obi-Wan doesn't kill Anakin. Obi-Wan can NEVER bare to actually kill him, he never wants to, call it a personality flaw or whatever. He wants to reason with him and when he sees that’s lost, he just says goodbye. He also understands that while he may have failed Anakin or at least failed to bring him back to the light, that Anakin is not beyond saving, that there is hope embodied by his children that can save the galaxy and possibly the soul of their father. It’s also kinda in line with why he didn’t kill Vader in Episode 3 or 4. He simply cannot muster up the emotional strength to kill his brother who he loves more than anything. I think he pitied Vader at the end of that fight if anything else, pitied the fact that he cared so much about beating his mentor, and Obi-Wan just didn’t care about a battle of ego. It was sad. The closest Ben ever gets to killing Anakin is not saving him as he's engulfed by flames at the end of Episode 3. Even in Episode 4, Ben refuses to actually fight to kill Darth culminating with Ben inviting his own death.

  • @gabrielreed1096

    @gabrielreed1096

@@FilmSpeak I have to disagree with this. At the end of this fight, Vader tells Obi that Anakin is dead, and Obi agrees, saying that his friend really is gone. Then he says "Goodbye Darth". Not "Goodbye Anakin", or "Old Friend ". Just "Darth". He understands that the Anakin he knew is gone, and is nothing but evil. The Original Trilogy stresses this point, because Obi Wan tells Luke that he must kill Vader. He doesn't think his children can save him. He hopes that they will be the ones to destroy him. Obi sees no good in Vader. I can understand why he didn't deliver the finishing blow on Mustafar, because he couldn't bear to strike down his brother, but that was ultimately a mistake. The show even frames this as a mistake that Obi Wan needs to reconcile. It's brought up by Vader in their rematch in episode 3 of Kenobi, and throughout the show Obi Wan feels guilt about allowing Vader to live. Considering all of this, it's extremely out of character, and downright stupid for Obi Wan to make the same mistake a second time, especially after a part of his character arc was coming to terms with the fact that he created Vader by letting him live on Mustafar. He knew what letting Vader live again meant, but he did it anyway. Every graveyard that Vader fills between the end of this show and the end of ROTJ is Obi Wan's fault. It's just bad writing. There's no excuse for it

How can Obi-Wan walk away believing Vader has fully consumed Anakin and he was nothing but heartless evil monster. Reva surviving getting stabbed by Vader twice, once as a youngling. Reva knowing Vader is Anakin and knows the whereabouts of Luke. Vader knowing Reva was alive as a youngling and choosing not to finish the job, therefore hesitating when Palpatine told him not to in order to grow strong enough to save Padme. Obi-Wan leaving Tatooine and therefore leaving Luke knowing he could be killed by the empire or Tuskin Raiders if they come to the house. Bail Organa knowing how important it is for Obi-Wan to protect Luke but asks him to leave anyway when he could have hired elite bounty hunters to go and save Leia. It doesn’t bother you that there’s no reason for Reva to want to kill Luke? Or how Reva survived being stabbed twice? Or how Reva travelled to Tatooine? Or for the Empire to have a Star destroyer follow Obi Wan, instead of having Vader follow Obi Wan in his small ship, at that point and the Star Destroyer continue to follow the larger ship? Or how Bail Organa isn’t arrested for treason, since the Grand Inquisitor knew Reva’s plan to draw out Obi-Wan and it worked? Or how Leia has zero feeling about ObiWan dying in a New Hope? Or how Force powers are significantly stronger in this series, than in the 3 films preceding it and the 3 films following it? Or how the plot seems to completely function on contrivances or the characters making poor decisions? Or how no one is ever clever in the entire series, every decision is poor, it’s just sometimes things work out? How did Obi Wan become weak in the force, how did he get it back? How did Obi Wan plan to protect Luke with no force and his lightsaber buried? If he had lost the ability to protect Luke, why be near him, that just puts Luke in potential danger? Why did Obi become someone who runs away or uses someone as a human shield? Or why is Obi being constantly saved by everyone else? Or why does the show want/expect the audience to see Reva as “good” now, that’s a bad message? Or why does the Empire military not operate in anyway like a military. Or why is Leia either as brilliant or as dumb as the scene needs her to be? Or why is a ten year old treated like an adult? Or if Luke and Leia are twins, why is Leia shown as more capable than Luke in every possible way, even though Luke is growing up in a harsher environment? Or why does Luke’s Aunt have blasters hidden, that the Uncle seems unaware of? What do they use to defend themselves from the Sandpeople? Or why does Reva’s power to extract information with the force, seem to come and go between episode? Or why is everything so dark, not in tone, but I can’t see anyone, and why is the camera awkwardly shaking, are they trying to hide to poor fight choreography? Is that why the force ends every lightsaber duel, can’t a lightsaber duel be won with a lightsaber? I can keep going, but I’ll stop now.

She had a lot of scenes cut from the finale and even an arc that would have Yoda teaching Obi Wan how to speak with Qui Gon's force ghost. Great video, with some (to me) novel observations making the video well worth it. And I love “He always has high ground.” Very well said. I do have one minor note: Several times, when discussing unsupported changes in tone, such as in episode six when they cut back to the ship with Leia being suddenly angry at Kenobi. Here and elsewhere, you describe how it seems as if a scene had been “lifted” from the episode. This is a (again, small) problem, because that doesn’t actually mean what you intended. To “lift” something from a story is to reproduce it elsewhere. For example, you could easily say some of Kenobi’s scenes were lifted from the Fallen Order game. What I think you meant to say was “pulled” or, as you use it elsewhere, “excised”. Anyway, just a heads up.

Her growth seemed forced, her lines felt flat - interesting character; poor writing/ directing. Too much time was focused on her; ffs why is the beginning of the whole series her back story?! It’s called Obi-Wan (it was hard for me to invest in her character at all - most of the focus of Ben felt interrupted by her character; nothing against the actress). Just venting, so much potential wasted in something that imho felt mediocre (just as it has been for Disney since it bought the franchise). It was nice seeing Ewan and Hayden again, like you said most of the heavy lifting was these two putting in the effort. 5/10 - would’ve loved to see something darker (Ik I’m expecting too much from Disney’s exec).

I loved the interaction between Owen and Obi-Wan and Leia and Obi-Wan, some Vader scenes were great and Reva is a great example of why the Inquisitors are inferior to both Jedi and Sith. Plotholes and mistakes in logic are kinda shitty as are some sequences but the nostalgia and those characters and actors saved it for me. Tbf tho only episodes 1 and 6 of Kenobi lived up to my expectations

Reva's final battle should have absolutely been against Kenobi instead of the Lars'. With Ben knowing what he learned about her in episode 5, he is on the defense the entire fight, not wanting to kill her, and trying to get her to see that she isn't hunting vader but becoming him. With her collapsing under the grief of that realization and turning off her saber, then we get the very same scene we had between her and Kenobi with him telling her that she is honoring her fellow younglings by ending the hunt. That would also allow Obi-wan to have fulfilled his purpose of protecting Luke, as opposed to no harm coming to Luke ONLY through plot necessity.

The way you started this review, I thought we were going to be about on the same page, but you ended up being way more positive than I expected. I, too, thought Obi-Wan's performance and Leia's performance were very good, but Reva just left me wishing she wasn't there. To be honest, the very ending would have worked better for me if it really HAD been a Tusken Raider attack and Obi-Wan had to rush back to save Luke from that. It would have fit better in canon, especially given what happened to Owen's dad. And it still would have reminded everybody how important Obi-Wan was in looking after Luke. Reva could have just been another menacing inquisitor without trying to force her development onto a story that bore another character's name in the title. And we wouldn't be left with a rogue character out there who knows about Luke.

Mando season 2 and Bobba were better than the Obi show. Writing, directing, and of course by not reckoning the OG film. They shouldn’t have fought yet, and making up a relationship with Leia that now makes her message make no sense and seeing Ben again and reaction to his death as being cold hearted. She didn’t react at all in Ep. 4, even when consoling Luke. Now because of the show Leia has a deeper relationship with Ben than alike and she feels nothing. Fan service trash. I don’t mind it when it makes sense. None of this did.

To me it is clear that the directors had issues in figuring out how to tie up Reva's arc together with Luke and Obiwan all together, which is why we get this giant teleportation of Reva from the siege battle to be mortally wounded and left to die and then suddenly her appearing on Tattoine, while Darth Vader is still pursuing the refugees transport ship that just left. I personally think it would have been better if Reva's arc ended before Obi-wan had his final duel with Darth vader. Like have obi-wan see Reva's reluctance in also becoming like Darth Vader and have this scene between Reva and Obi-wan be the one thing that could spure Obi-wan on to also finally face Darth Vader like how Reva faced her internal demon. And have the the fight continue as it did with Darth Vader first winning and then Obi-wan having a come back. I would have felt much heavier. Felt a fair bit robbed after the Darth Vader fight when it cut over to Reva / Luke ... The weight continue to shift from a season climax to a side story, since it continued to cut back and forth between Reva/Luke & Obi-wan/Darth Vader Another issues that I had is the multitudes of seasons endings scenes. Like in the last episode near the end I would sit there thinkign "the end" and another scene pops up. 1: first we see Darth Vader sitting on this throne promising vengeanse

For me, the serious was worth it for the Vader/Obi stuff alone. Yeah it wasn't perfect but that last scene with the two is amazing and beautifully acted and I hope Hayden gets the props he deserves for what he managed to pull off while only seeing a third of the guys face. I didn't mind Reva and really don't get the hate but I agree more could have been done with the character. As someone who grew up with the Prequels it gave me a great sense of closure and I sort of hope McGregor doesn't come back again and it was a great send off for his as an actor playing that role. If they have to do anything else I would just want a Vader tv series but weirdly enough they have never shown any interest in utilising it's most intriguing character in live action so I imagine this series is all we will get. Edit: Forgot to say, the kid playing Leia was really, really good. From the first line it surprised me how much she acted just like Carrier Fisher and it was really fun to watch.

I don't know if it's a good idea to play the Vader card at this point. Disney proves to us that Star Wars is not a story but a brand. Money makes them make series / movies cheap, bland, without an idea for a story. They only put their beloved characters on us to encourage us to watch. Characters are spoiled by a weak scenario, making them "out of the character" (for example Luke - from hopeful loving and forgiving to a bitter old loner). Obi Wan has his VERY good emotional scenes, but it's not the script / directing, but the actors' heart for the characters and the foundation that was made years ago (prequels). I owe nothing to the creator. If this were any other series from a different banner and the main characters were not Vader / Obi Wan, it would be a bad series. Disney knows about it, which is why it allows itself to do something like this. There is no love for Star Wars out there. And I don't trust them enough to let them do anything with the Vader character at the moment. You can see that they do not understand the world and I would not like them to experiment with canonical characters anymore. I can let them creat a new story with new characyer and if they'll faild it be easier to deal with it (than with sequels - Leia dead, Han dead, Skylwaker's legacy dead, Anakin's pointless sacrifice and more) and if they are doing something unusual, it will be a sign in the right direction. I hope for they'll learned one day... But I don't think so. Only money have matters and sadly it's true. I can write very long about that....

One more thing - Vader's story is amazing! The most complex, deep, the most tragic and expressive character in the history of cinematography! but I believe that being so spared in the movies / series and showing little of him makes him an even more mysterious character. The "Vader Card" should not be used anytime you want, it should be like the dessert you are waiting for for your entire dinner. In my opinion, it gives strength of character, mystery and myth. It works, which is why Anakin's unveiling in the final episode was hefty. (amazing scene! Ewan and Hayden smash that!) We don't know what Vader hides, what he feels for real. we guess, but we don't know. Maybe Anakin is still there, brooding and igniting self-hatred to become his alter ego, or is he just Vader and Anakin is muffled somewhere inside? Who knows how he is in lonliness ... But I like these kinds of myths. And I would be afraid that all this "Vader legend" would lose a lot if he got his own series, and seeing how bad the Star Wars productions look and what they doing with loved characters it not helps - I just don't want to, because I'm afraid for my favorite character, even though I love Hayden and I want see him more in this character (Anakin / Vader), because it deserves recognition. But I don't really trust Disney ... Gosh ... It's hard to be a Star Wars fan...

My biggest problem with the show is the inciting incident itself. It's riddled with issues. Inciting incident: Leia's kidnapping. First of all. She's the "daughter" of an Emperial Senator/King of Alderan. It would not be suspicious in the slightest for them to use their Royal Guard to find her, or even imperial forces themselves. U know what would be suspicious though? If they hired a Jedi and if that Jedi was seen with her. This would put the entire Organa family on some kind of terrorist list, would it not? Bail Organa's career should be fucked but for some reason, he's just fine. Second of all. Obi wan. He is the LAST person you should ask for help simply because he knows just how important she is. The show wants us to think this is the reason he SHOULD go, but that's dumb. He needs to remain inconspicuous. He's the only one who knows Leia is Anakin's daughter, and the inquisitors are specifically hunting him and other Jedi down. Third, why isn't Reva taken into custody once the other inquisitors learn of her kidnapping the daughter of an Empire Official? Good for her, the military she serves isn't very competent. Fourth of all, obi wan literally just saw three inquisitors on Tatooine, yet still decides to leave which leaves Luke undefended. His main mission is to protect Luke. Why leave the day after seeing three people who are specifically known for hunting down and enslaving/killing force sensitive children? I can probably find more issues if I think about it more. But these are the surface level ones.

The issue with this show is that it serves two masters and ends up being a terrible apprentice to both: It wants to be a "dark, gritty" drama like Logan or Joker but also wants to be a kids show that feels like its been processed through a thousand focus groups so that it "hits all the right metrics." The end result is that it feels like a pretty bad imitation of an HBO miniseries and a live action Nickelodeon sitcom.

All the Disney Wars shows are basically the same to me, with the exact same problems. But Disney doesn't care about quality or creativiy. One thing that I'm not really seeing a lot of people talk about but which I really felt distanced me from the show was the soundtrack. Aside from the odd melody here and there, overall the soundtrack for the entirety of the series was mindnumbingly dull and so disgustingly uninteresting with little to no emotion to be found anywhere in it. When I think of Revenge of the Sith and the fall of Anakin, I immediately can hear John Williams delectable melodies in my head. Anakins Dark Deeds, Padme's Ruminations, Battle of the Heroes, The Immolation and so many more. Each of these scores takes the scenes they are so delicately crafted around and elevates them far beyond what is appearing on screen. But yet in this series, I genuinely have no recollection of any of the score and I really feel like the Few emotional moments that we got were seriously harmed by the dullness of the score. Like Obi-Wan learning that Anakin is still alive was such a powerful and monumental moment, and the soundtrack should have reflected that, instead we got nothing. Obi-Wan meeting Vader for the first time should have had some of the most powerful music we have heard from star wars, but instead we got nothing. The entire shows score seems to reside in the comfort of warm strings and never deviates into anything close to the genius operatic sounds that John Williams delights on embracing. Cinema and TV is a dual medium. It's 50% Visual, 50% auditory. The only thing is audio is much more nuances than visuals and so is much harder to quantifiable measure, but I truly believe that a huge amount of my enjoyment of the prequels can be attributed to the score, and when you're movie/show has a bad score, then you are already down 50% to me. *Edit* I just got to the point in this video where he addresses the music but I feel like my point still stands as it was a quick "By the way" sort of critique.

That doesn't mean he can't see that he ALSO failed Anakin as his mentor. It's Lucasfilm under Kennedy that wants to turn him into a broken man full of guilt and self pity and utterly one-note. It has nothing to do with what Lucas made.

My problem with the show is that is another show sprinkle with Obi-Wan and Vader. I would've care more about Reva if we saw her motivation since the beginning. She is not main character so we don't need a convoluted back-story about her. What we needed was her beginning and how she went to become an Inquisitor. How she was planning to go up the ranks and get her revenge. Sadly, she was portrait as a mysterious character when it wasn't need it. Leia was a good addition, at first. Again, she overstated her welcome making the show an escort mission and even not making sense most of the time. I would've love to see that more dark story rather than the Disney-fied version we got.

I'm writing this before watching the review but I too have mixed feelings about it *warning spoilers*: I liked how they sometimes kept Obi's character somewhat identical, a little emotionally detached ect, although I feel he played into the Disney's narrative a bit too much at the end, a little too friendly I feel at the start they kept a lot of the old themes running well, like that night-life city location, gave me attack of the clones vibes which was good, and more simple scenes like traversing through a desert, no unnecessary extra BS. Also liked how they made this series very dark, like vader breaking a kids neck etc, the reason I say this is because I feel disney sugar coats things too much, but this feels like it brings a bit of balance back to what the original series was, which was horrific at times, vader did kill younglings after all. I feel Reva trying to attack vader after 'luring him to obi wan' made no sense I didn't like how easy some characters would defeat bad guys later on in the series however, and how Reva would just trust obi wan like that, and how Reva decided she couldn't kill a kid after all that, just seems unrealistic cliche to me. I also disagree with obi wan's ownage of Vader at the end, just seems unrealistic to me I feel Vader would have overpowered Obi wan again. Those are just my opinions of course

@@Aaron722076 There are bigger issues to having them fight again. 1) Were they to fight again the line from aNH that Vader says, about the last time him being the learner, but now the master doesn't make much sense. Coming off of RotS, where his fall to the dark side and subsequent combat takes place with Obi-wan still as his senior and mentor, the line makes sense. 2) If Obi-Wan were to beat Vader, he would most assuredly kill him, no doubt. He wouldn't just leave him assuming he would 'die due to his injuries' as could reasonably be expected in the state he left him on Mustafar at the end of RotS. He would make sure he was dead, perhaps even if it meant his own life, as was the pan in RotS. (The reason Yoda lived was because he fell, and was clearly outmatched, leading to point 3). 3) The only viably option. Obi-Wan escapes / looses. This maybe viable, but would require a very competent writing team. The main issue being that with the vast amount of resources, equipment and manpower at Vader, and the empires disposal. Obi-Wan would find it very difficult to escape and not be tracked, by droids, bounty hunters, inquisitors, and Vader. Maybe, just maybe they could separate Vader from his resources and give Obi-Wan some way of avoiding detection and pursuit. Otherwise there is no way he can possibly return to Tatooine. Though I have yet to see the show, lacking Disney Plus, I have seen some very thorough reviews, that tell me my doubts are/were well founded. That they do not have any qualified writing staff ad Disney, and that they have considerably less than infinite monkey's on typewriters, and what they have are spread too thin and clearly need a break.

Can't bellieve what I'm reading this show was abysmal . The character assassinations of the characters created by George Lucas continue in Disney Star Wars . They did it with Luke in TLJ and during the course of the sequel trlogy, culminating in a Palpatine adopting the Skywalker name as well outlasting the entire Skywalker bllodline and now they did it with a deconstruction of Obi Wan Kenobi here. Obi Wan ignored the promise he made to Yoda at the end of Revenge of the Sith to watch over and protect Luke and the only reason he didn't fail completely as some have correctly pointed out was not because of something heroic he did but because of the fact Reva did not kill Luke . Reva was such a poorly written character and the way she turned good was so contrived and badly written. Also Leia should never have been in this series or at least not in it for more than 1 episode. Meanwhile the Vader we got was a pale imitation of the character we saw in the original trilogy . The versimilitude of Vaders' power that he showed at the the Rogue One and the original trilogy has been vastly diminished by the Kenobi show and the legacy of the character diminished by the fact he lost to Obi twice. That said Vader and Kenobi should have never duelled each other in this series the first place. Also Obi Wan just walked away from Vader when he had the chance to kill him . What a hero for allowing Vader to live murder many more innocent people across the Galaxy . The situation where Obi just walked away jumped the shark for me Kathleen Kennedy made this series to make Reva a hero despite never earning it. I do feel a bit sorry for Hayden Christensen who deserved much better material to fully redeem his portrayal of the character. Also Lucasfilm must be even dumber than I thought if they expect us to believe that an Imperial Star Destroyer cannot blow up a civilian transport. Also the VFX and camera work and editing was attrocious and the music was the worst I've in Star Wars film or TV media by a huge margin . I haven't seen something as badly shot or as dark in terms of lighting as the Kenobi show since Aliens vs Predator Requiem aka Alien vs Predator 2. To add insult to injury I also watched Jurassic World Dominion recently too and I thought that was awful too . I am now moving on to Stranger Things for some enjoyment instead. because I'm finished with Star Wars.

Reva should have been a great character, but they wrote her, and she is acted as an unstable psychopath. The screaming and impatient yelling is so far afield from a trained dark side user, it's comical. It makes the whole "checkbox" hire seem more valid when the character is so awful, yet so prioritized. Also, including Leia in such a pronounced role ruins A New Hope. Her recording to Ben makes no sense anymore. Her words are for someone she had never met, but had heard about from her father. Also, those weren't A-Wings at the inquisitor base (I hate the actual name). They were T-47 speeders. Oh, and Inquisitors aren't Sith.

I'm actually fully ok with the use they made of Qui-Gon. I mean, this training with him everyone seems so desperate to see? Guys, the entire show already was about Obi-Wan getting that training. Let go of your ego, of all forms of excessive attachment (be it to something you love or to something you fear, like in Obi's case) and, at heart, you'll have everyting you need to keep your identity in the Force. What's left is some Jedi mumbo-jumbo and some more meditation, then our hero will be the person we've met in Episode IV, ready to become a Force spirit when the time comes. There's no story left to tell, this was the story. And I like that Qui-Gon was a part of it in the sense that he simply showed up at the end, to confirm Obi-Wan's maturation and greet him as an old friend, from master to master. Then sure, again, he's going to teach Obi some specific technique to become a spirit in the following years, but that's not a story worth telling. Obi-Wan's inner maturation already took place. It's like telling the story of an athlete finding the motivation to train vs telling the "story" of an athlete simply training. The first would indeed be a story, but the second would be just a montage of some guy lifting weights. On another matter, I did love the setting of the final duel, because it's practically a visual representation of the state Anakin is in right now: wandering in a labyrinth of silence and shadows, unable to get back into the light. After Mustafar, it's like this is the second stage of Anakin's journey through Hell (or Purgatory, I guess, given how it'll end). And I love that Obi-Wan has to go through the fire torture, aka his own "Mustafar", before getting there.

Interactions between Leia and Obi-Wan were great. The Inquisitors were set up well, but Reva was wasted and her motivations in the end made no sense. Visually the final saber duel was fantastic, but there are so many plot holes in the confrontation. Why does Vader walk away from a buried Kenobi? He should be able to sense his opponent is still alive and fighting. Building Vader up and just neutering him at the end undercuts the story. It's already hard for the story to have stakes since we know how these characters end. Kenobi, Owen, and Beru needed to look older. Somehow they go from healthy middle aged characters to seniors in less than a decade and thinking on it takes you out of the story. 14:25 Sorry can't avoid the "achually" moment here, but those are not A-WIngs. They are speeders, like what the Rebel Alliance uses on Hoth at the start of Empire Strikes Back. Finally I have to disagree that Hayden was a good actor in the prequels. There was no depth to his character in the movies. Anakin as a character and the prequel storyline was saved by the Clone Wars cartoons. Watching other movies Christensen has been in before now, he's grown and improved, but still not more than serviceable. This show is the first time I see him as being able to hold his own with other actors in the franchise.

Reva’s redemption wasn’t earned. She was a terrible character and did awful things. She was written to be so over the top and Vader putting up with her didn’t fit with how he was shown randomly killing and hurting people. Reva should have been killed off by Vader in episode 4, keeping her alive was a huge mistake.

This video absolutely hits the nail on the head with Kenobi! Disney seem to have a problem with going for the darker original scripts, for example the execution of Kenobi feels to awfully similar to Rise of Skywalker. And yes the music and cinematography really killed the momentum of the story, making the show a disappointing 7/10 overall. Should of been a film?

It was a real disaster this show, what I started with the greatest of expectations has ended with disgust. You pointed out many of the failings in regard to the actual filming and production of this series, but I disagree in that nothing about this was redeemable not even the story or dialogue. The story was DOA. It breaks cannon over and over. It does not add depth to the universe or original characters at all. How sad the talents of all the great actors were wasted on this contrived and amateurish writing. The worst tragedy is Disney will not learn from yet another disaster.

This video essay made me feel more emotions than half of Obi Wan Kenobi. My biggest disappointment was the lack of coherent theme tying the series together, it felt so disjointed and fragmented. The Lucas Star Wars are so thematically rich, it's jarring when I watched Kenobi and was thematically starved.. However, you've managed to draw out the slim threads of theme in this series and that's what gets me in the feels.

I have no issue with the show just a little confused… just a tiny bit… on the logicality of everything that happened. Just gonna list my questions because you people might share the same feeling: 1. How does an army of storm troopers manage to fail killing twelve people in a hallway sitting practically 6ft in front of them? Hit one and get an entire chunk of stormtroopers wiped out by 1 grenade? 2. They are chasing down a freighter with *no hyper drive* as a Star destroyer and are struggling to destroy said freighter missing like 80% of there shots. Why don’t they send out their star fighters? Or use a stasis beam? 3. Obi wan launches off in another ship and Vader says let’s go after enemy 1 with the entire Star destroyer instead of just Vader flying out to chase Obi-wan, forgetting about enemy 2. Why didn’t Vader just go deal with Obi wan while the Star destroyer continues to chase the freighter? It makes no sense. 4: why is the inquisitor lady even going to tatooine to kill Luke? She has no clue who Luke is or his importance and just had her entire plan fail, without vader even so much as getting a scratch or lift his own lightsaber. Wouldn’t she just rethink her career choices or die? She does have a hole in her chest, it’s a Miricle she even makes it to tatooine let alone get a ship. 5: if Vader is the most devastating force of evil in the galaxy, who has killed millions of people without remorse and turns out is no longer anakin… why did Obi wan leave him alive??? They set it up like Vader is to die anyways (I get it Vader is supposed to survive, story and all, but in the context of the situation it makes no sense)

    1. This makes the sequels even worse. So the only old Jedi we have seen is a bitter old hermit hiding from the galaxy: Kenobi. So what do the writers do? Make Luke exactly the same. Jedi don’t need to hide anymore. 2. The ending makes no sense. Kenobi saw Vader kill many innocents to get to him and had a chance to destroy him. He is now responsible for the deaths of billions. Obviously he couldn’t kill him but they could have written it that he was saved. 3. Revas motivation was mystifying at the end. Why kill Luke? She’s not an inquisitor. For revenge against Vader? Kenobi? It makes no sense. Revenge for Vader killing little kids by killing a little kid? Really? It would make more sense for her to intervene in the Kenobi Vader dual maybe first Kenobi thinks he is outnumbered but then Vader realizes he is outmatched with two opponents and escapes. 4. The Force is Female agenda is too obvious here. Reva is forced in, Leia is the Star and Luke almost ignored and Tala is in there too. Luke runs away like a coward. Bail does so many stupid things it’s hard to count.

    1. Lukes character is already pre-ordained, to flesh his character out any further would create inconsistancies in the characters timeline. Luke had no prior knowledge of the force or the dark side whatsoever before Ben saved him, and explained it to him in Episode 4. Jedi dont need to hide anymore ? WTF are you even on about ? Literally the first episode is filled with Inquisitors hunting down friggin Jedi. 2.There are two majorly impactful factors that support Obi Wan's decision to remain neutral with Vader/Anakin's fate. The first being that he and Obi-Wan had deep seeded history and Obi-Wan couldn't bring himself to murder his brother, no matter how better off the universe would be. The second reason was that Obi-Wan trusted one mans judgement above anyone's. Qui-Gon Jinn's. With his final moments Qui-Gon asked Kenobi to "Train the boy. He is the chosen one. He will bring balance." This was a promise Kenobi was even willing to break the Jedi code to uphold. (kzread.info/dash/bejne/epmumsiOnJure6g.html) The point i'm trying to make is that Obi-Wan knew he couldn't interfere with Anakin/Vader's fate. Out of fear that the prophecy may not come to fruition, 3. Totally agree with you on this one 4. Don't think the female agenda was as bad as your makin out to be. Reva's character couldve been male for all i care and I still would of left the series hating them.

@@nizzanator I was talking about the sequel writers. Luke’s fate in the sequels is wide open. But they made him just like the only Jedi we have seen post prequels: old, hiding, even bitter. Why make Luke so similar? He is the hero of the galaxy and good friends either the leadership do the Republic. He could be happy, successful, well-liked, etc. there’s no reason for him to be hiding from the world. 2. The whole point of the encounter was that there was No Anakin left and Vader killed him. Therefore it is not Kenobis fault. But that also means that if he kills him, he is not killing Anakin. You can’t have it both ways. The writers were trying hard to give Kenobi closure and peace.

@@choreomaniac 1. Okay so you were making points about the new trilogy. Didnt realise. 2. The Jedi don't just execute semi defenceless opponents on a whim. No matter how much safer the universe would be. It goes against the Jedi code. Its like Obi-Wan stated in episode 3 "Only a sith deals in absolutes." And he'd be practically trading places with Vader for what ? While I agree they could have altered the plot slightly to accomidate a more linear/believable summary to Vader/Obi-Wans duel. It would have contradicted any and all of the events leading up to their battle. Reva was off world, planning to murder Luke on Tatooine and no one asside from the Rebels knew Kenobi was on that planet at that time. And I doubt any of them would have had the balls to step in the lion's den with one of the most feared Sith lords in the galaxy.

I’m still wondering what the point of Reva’s character was. I guess since she was a youngling when order 66 was given, her character shows just how horrific the Empire is, but they could have done that in other ways. Vader basically defeats her with just his mind, then she chases young Luke in the desert only not to kill him. It just seems like a waste of time. Btw, this is NOT a criticism of Moses Ingram, she’s a fine actor. I just think the character was poorly written.

It has to be said I’d actually argue that reeva is far worse than vader, bc we have his backstory (an actual good one) he had nothing left by the time he was locked in that suit, now it obviously doesn’t make what he did right but at least it’s tragically understandable, whereas reeva has absolutely no reason to do 99% of the crap that she does if all she wants is Vader, she kills families, children, (or at least is fully prepared to) she’s insubordinate, she’s stupid (one example among many being how she had an “opportunity” to kill Vader but didn’t do it proper, she’s incredibly lucky then that she hadn’t been killed multiple times over if that was her logic, another example being that even if we assume, as you do, that she somehow knows about Luke why would she Wanna kill him anyway Vader doesn’t know about him nor does he have any meaningful connection to him yet, and if she doesn’t know why is she after this random child, AND FINALLY WHY (outside of what we already know from the ot) IS IT THIS ONE RANDOM KID THAT SNAPS OUT OF HER PSYCHOPATHIC STATE, one good action does not redemption make (rant over I could go over the godlike plot armor she has, but I just wanted to get my thoughts out) if you like her you like her she just infuriated me so much
