The huge German coal mines that swallow autobahns and towns
Ғылым және технология
Looking at Tagebau Hambach and Garzweiler, the enormous open cast lignite (brown coal) mines in Germany which have eaten their way through towns, autobahns, farms and forests. These massive coal mines generate around 20% of Germany's electricity consumption, but at a huge environmental cost.
The A4 was one of several autobahns which have been moved to accommodate the mines, leaving abandoned stubs and interchanges, as well as several towns and villages having been destroyed.
Mining operations use some of the largest vehicles or moveable machines ever built; huge bucket wheel excavators such as Bagger 288 and 293, to remove the overburden and then the lignite, which is sent to the many large power stations nearby by conveyor belt and train.
Combination of original drone and ground based footage, with maps etc.

I registered my drone in Germany and followed all laws.

Those coal usage figures are a rare UK W against our German frenemies
this is one of the most disgusting things humans have ever done, future germans will never forgive the people who made this happen I am sure

I don't disagree with how disgusting it is. But Germany itself has done some uh... more disgusting things. And now we are powerless to stop them...
your channel is growing remarkably fast, keep it up!
It's a very very very big hole, its bigger than mahoosive. Some might say Milton Keynes could be improved with the help of a bagger or 2...
Honestly if they just used nuclear they wouldnt have to bother with all this mess.

I never understood the point of shutting down nuclear plants to replace them with coal plants. I'm not the biggest fan of nuclear energy myself but you should never shut down nuclear power plants if there is no clean alternative. Germany should be ashamed of this.
Since making this video, I've found charts saying Germany's use of lignite has declined in recent years, and their share of electricity generated by renewable sources is higher than the UK - www.cleanenergywire.org/factsheets/germanys-energy-consumption-and-power-mix-charts
That is really quite a large hole 🕳

Indubitably.
Well, at least the Green party should be happy that they closed all the nuclear power plants in the country!

Nuclear Power is not net zero. And the CDU SPD began closing nuclear plants in 2011!

Doesn't matter it's being dragged into it. We need nuclear power, renewables will not cut it. Net Zero is a con.@@Canleaf08

Really cool that you actually get drone footage yourself! I can image it aids you greatly in the edit :D Do please keep the audio ducking rather slow however. The way it is in this video it makes it feel like it's attacking me every millisecond you're not saying a sound, rather unpleasant x)
I wonder what they plan to do with them when they do phase out coal after it's too late. A new lido, perhaps? Or maybe new data centres for all your videos by 2038.

I confirm that I do have gigabytes of footage that would be best archived at the bottom of a very deep hole

They're planning to flood Tagebau Garzweiler and Hambach - this happend to smaller open-coal mines in the region before - e.g. "Blausteinsee". Our local politicans are also thinking about a channel to connect both lakes. We'll see what the future brings.

@@Janekrich Unsurprisingly, given the holes are up to 500m deep, filling them with water will take 40-60 years, while they'll also need annual top-ups as the lake beds won't be completely impermeable. They'll also likely be slightly acidic, limiting wildlife or recreational uses.

I think flooding them is a bad idea. What if we need to use them again when renewables 'turn out' to be insufficient @@mittfh
My favourite Hole, atleast the New A4 has signs for the Tree of the year so the new highway was Worth it

Recent headline: most of these trees are dead now, it became too dry for them 🙃
Do they have end-of-life plans for this hole? I wonder what they could do with it? Nuclear waste storage? Giant reservoir? Underground airport? Build a massive bunker? Ski resort? Nature reserve akin to Jurassic park? 1-million seat stadium?

I think the general plan involves letting it fill with water, and then maybe floating some solar panels on it as a token apology for all the coal.

Quite ironic considering everyone wants to go "net zero"
Should just keep on cutting until they run out.
