Lützerath: Why Germany is destroying villages for coal

Right in the heart of Germany, the village of Lützerath is about to be destroyed for coal - even though the country has vowed to turn its back on the fuel as soon as possible. But the villagers and activists are fighting back.

We're destroying our environment at an alarming rate. But it doesn't need to be this way. Our new channel Planet A explores the shift towards an eco-friendly world - and challenges our ideas about what dealing with climate change means. We look at the big and the small: What we can do and how the system needs to change. Every Friday we'll take a truly global look at how to get us out of this mess.

@@b_uppy there's some some surfacing concerns about natural gas. Apparently with substances like methane large percentages are being leaked as part of the extraction process. I believe methane is about a hundred times worse than CO2 at capturing atmospheric heat, so natural gas has been a bit of an arguable situation until extraction is clean.

What you guys don't realize is that we will be dealing with nuclear waste for hundreds of years to come. The prize tag attached to that is conveniently left out of the discussion by nuclear energy supporters. Let alone the risk factor of running nuclear power plants. And I am not talking natural disasters only. Political instability, wars, etc. must also be taken into account. Have look at what is going on in Saporischnaja at the moment.

The factories produced a large quantity of air and water pollutant. We hope the local government can regulated that bad situation, but they only cared of their money which is still today. Everyday I can't sit out of my house because the breathtaking air pollution can make you coughing. We also can't use the underground water because it's colour everyday. If I can't live in and out of my home, what other can I have ? If the government is useless why I need hand my money to you as tex? It's better to use these to feed some stray dogs.

The thing is it’s not greed on the energy companies part. They have to mine the coal because German energy policy requires it. They shut down nuclear, and have very little renewables, so the only choice is to keep using coal. Why do you think the high court approved the forced sale? Because the government needs coal to produce enough electricity for the country. When the woman says “we need to stop digging coal now”, what does she propose it is replaced with? A typical coal plant produces 3000MW, which would require more than 1000 of the largest wind turbines to replace. Additionally, coal is a stable all-weather power source, not subject to wind or sun. The only solution is nuclear.

  • @matthau87

Nonsense. RWE want to mine the coal because they have a long-term contract with the state government allowing them to do so. They're a private company after all so all they care for is their own profit while claiming it's necessary for the national energy supply, which it isn't.

Just imagine what that money could have provided in Europe. The Ministers also get paid TAX FREE, that's 96,000 euros a year and not 1 euro tax on any of it, while you are having to pay tax on your income. Perhaps instead of trying to score points you should really be asking yourself exactly WHY Germany is not making it known that they are bulldozing villages for coal. This was a very interesting short report, I do find it very disappointing that we do use the click generating title of "Why Germany is destroying villages for coal" without really answering the question. At no point during the report do we address Germany's Energy situation beyond simply mentioning a crisis. I believe anything that talks about the coal mining in Germany should put things in context by mentioning the deep connection the increase in coal extraction in Germany has with the political decision to stop using Nuclear Energy in a country where solar panels and windmills just will never be enough. It is heartbreaking to see people getting evicted and seeing this lovely country I live in extract coal, but this decision is the direct impact from large environmental organizations themselves lobbying to put a stop to any kind of large clean energy production projects such as Nuclear or Hydroelectric Plants. This directly has the counter effect of increasing Germany's reliance on Energy imports and dirty energy. For the same reason many many many German households still heat themselves via coal or gas-operated water boilers, which is nuts from an environmental point of view. If electricity production was cheaper and more sustainable in Germany as a whole, people would use normal electric heaters. The way policies were determined in the last few years are a direct cause why Germany now has to increase its coal production, at a time when the climate emergency was never more pressing. This spells a grim future for Germany's energy independence and sustainable development unless a massive turn is taken immediately towards Nuclear, Hydroelectrical and Geothermal Projects.

Burning coal will kill people directly through disease and later on indirectly through global warming and the accompanying warfare and famine that will result. Bulldozing a village as old as Lützerath is a crime against human civilization, kicking a man out of the only house he's ever lived in is immoral as well.

Watching this documentary makes me realize something: Some people are TOO ignorant to see beyond their own ideology. Some people really care that coal mining and production produces so much CO2 emmissions, but ignore that this coal gives them heat, warmth, electricity and allows their industry to produce stuff thus giving people employment thus allowing them to put food on their table. They are in support of green energy, but when Russia decided to hault gas supplies to Germany, they suddenly felt the need to complain, mind you changing their mind whether LNG is green or not. Everyone is an environmentalist until they get cold. Everyone cares for the environment as long as it doesn't affect them directly. Everyone is pro green energy, until the sun sets and wind stops blowing. Everyone is pro green energy when the rest of the world isn't. Some people can't see beyond their beliefs, they hate reality, they want privileges and morality. Well, there you go, one of the most educated nations on earth, with no education. The French are mad for choosing nuclear energy. How true that is, today. Germany, a nation literally built upon Russian gas, wants to go green. Germans deserve this.

You guys do know that less energy-dense power sources like wind and solar causes this same greedy-mining-madness around the world, right? The difference is that in the case of rare earths and other critical minerals, they are mostly located in Asia, Africa and Latin America. So, as far as the problem isn't in your backyard, is it okay to do it? Please, people, understand that I'm not saying we need coal-powered plants. I'm just stating that this same kind of movement should be worried about the consequences of a growing resource-intensive power grid. There are communities just like Lützerath all over the world, in China, Brazil, Chad and many other countries. They are simply not receveing the same attention because the western media in general seems to doesn't care. Renewables alone ARE NOT the magic solution to both our problems of climate change and social injustice. They are certainly part of the solution, but we'll also need responsible resource management, energy efficiency, less overall energy consumption and awareness that this isn't a simple problem to solve. What I'm saying is, preventing coal mining in Germany is the same as just pushing the problem to other parts of the world and then confortably pointing the finger at them. I say: what we need is a significant change in global mining industries to be held accountable for the consequences of predatory resource exploration. It has already been done in an industry: nuclear power. Uranium mining is globally recognized as having the highest environnentaly respectful practices, due to high regulatory standards and zero tolerance for illegal uranium exploration by the fuel assembly supply chain. So, again, we have to learn from this industry to apply the same level of rigorousness to the other mining industries around the world. That's the only way to keep this absurd type of thing from happening over and over.
