The Huge Difference Between Blizzard And Grinding Gear Games

Ойындар

Path of Exile 2 is set up for tremendous success not only due to GGG's excellent, hard-working developers, but also thanks to all their responsiveness to player feedback about PoE2. The action RPG genre will rumble once this game hits and ARPGs will never be the same. Time after time, they are proving Path of Exile 2's gameplay will be a step above everything else, and when PoE2 early access arrives, we'll all understand this fact.
This breaks down where Blizzard falls short and GGG rises to the occasion. Diablo 4 could've been a better game, if only Blizzard listened to their players before launch...
The hype for PoE2 continues to grow, exiles.

I was part of the Alpha in D4 and gave feedback on the lack of build diversity. Where was my Pet build for the Druid that I cand create from the start like D2? Felt like I had to babysit my minions. Felt like picked the same skills if I would make a second class of the same kind. They mentioned that they would go back to its roots from D2's skill tree. I mentioned that I didn't feel more powerful putting extra points in the skill tree. That was my focus during the alpha. I didn't care for Endgame so I was focused on the journey of building different characters for variety's sake. Nope. When they released the pre-launched Beta. Nothing changed. I was optimistic that it would be better and since I liked the Diablo franchise, I paid the $70, ignoring my better judgment. Worst decision I made. I've played POE occasionally when it was competing with D3 and it didn't grab me for some reason. I saw the trailer for POE2 at Exilecon 2023 and was completely blown away. Now that is what I thought D4 would be. I digress. So back to POE and after reading build guides, and the basics of POE, I ventured forth to understand the basics of POE. Completely blown away by the build diversity within the gem system. Mind blown! In the end, POE2 is on my radar and I don't even care about D4's coming expansion. I'm intrigued about the new class but it won't sway me to come back to D4. I've tried the recent 'Loot Reborn' season and still not convinced. I don't like that builds are tied with items. That's what it was like D3.

I'm not sure how rehauling the item system completely while adding 6 end-game bosses is "forgetting the game." I want more from them, but I also feel like I got more than my money's-worth out of the campaign. If people expect a better campaign from PoE, I think they're delusional. It doesn't make sense to put that kind of money into a game where you'll spend most of the experience outside the campaign anyway.

I think that the main reason for why D4 was released in a state where it needed 12+ months more development time, was primarily due to the higher-ups at Activision wanted the game to come out before the sale to Microsoft, so they could increase the value of the company and also get a bonus payout from the D4 release.

"...Blizzard ignored the feedback, moved forward with their vision and released in the state they thought was best." I don't think v1.0 had anything to do with the game's vision being in a good enough place that the development team felt confident about the release state. I think the development team was pressured to release because the current build was just far along enough that the initial game sales could be leveraged before the ABK sale to Microsoft would be completed, thus netting one final cash-in for shareholders, and also inflate the company value during acquisition negotiations.

What happened with Diablo IV is very telling. And, I can't quite come down on either side of the situation. When the huge issues started up with Blizzard and how they run things, etc, they ended up shifting people around, letting people go, reassigning projects, etc. The guy who was in charge of Diablo IV at that time was caught up in all of it, so the game ended up in someone else's hands. Now, the second person was a huge fan of how Diablo III works (and was a big part of it, too, including their way of doing Seasons/Leagues), and I think was instrumental on how Immortal came out, as well. The first guy, though? He wanted a more MMO-ish version of Diablo IV, with seasons that were more like how Sea of Thieves and Destiny do things. There are challenges and achievements to get each season that progress you through. Even if you don't do those things, just grinding out XP would have progressed through the rewards. The reason it is open world is because of his wishes for the game. Same with world bosses, the helltides, and more. All of those are things he wanted for the game, and was working towards for endgame content and more. With him, we had trailers showing things like mercenaries that would be available on launch. But, when the shakeups happened, he was replaced for Diablo IV. But, the game had already been in development for so long and needed to release very soon! To make the game 'viable' they chose to rework the things that were not absolutely completed, and into a more Diablo III style to be safe. What we ended up with was a 'Frankenstein's Monster' of sorts, very similar to how the original Justice League movie released (due to the same basic stuff with directors), and very similar results. Would the game have been as it has been if this had not happened? No, it would be far better from the very start. So, that part has been forever changed for the (much) worse! But, the shakeup was kinda necessary because Blizzard has been being a really crappy company internally for a long time. However, what would have occurred had all those people being wronged just up and quit all at the same time? Would Blizzard have changed things without needing such a drastic chaos internally? Too many pros, too many cons... all ends up looking very difficult to pick a definite side.

Reaction to feedback is what actually separates two for me heavily. I remember how they've tried to emphasise that they're going back to D2 which many of us wished for, they've even brought in famous speedrunners for the test runs but any feedback I remember was not considered and actually they've moved past D2 things since then making it a D3 clone which people ultimately hated in broader diablo community. Whilst PoE is reacting so quickly it's astonishing. It's not even alpha yet and it's changing significantly, in all possible directions and not just some focused small tweaks. Thought about some random new feature, neat - implementation same month. It's insane considering literally no one is doing similarly.

Id love to see if and how they can "upgrade" the poe1 skilltree system. Maybe its possible to make it modular, sort of like the paragon board in d4. At least with these private tests they're filled with more of the hardcore players who understand everything with the game. I love the changes they've made, especially the flasks! That needed to revert and they did. Love how GGG listen and adjust what's needed to make a more amazing game

One other thing I noticed when it comes to Blizzard vs. GGG (and even EHG) is that Blizzard devs almost never mention other games in their interviews/chats. It's like their lips are cursed. Jonathan Rogers, on the other hand, has no problem talking about LE, No Rest, Diablo and others outside the ARPG genre. GGG knows what they want. They want to give people a game they enjoy. And if their preference has changed due to other games, they will make changes to fill that need in their own way. They embrace this evolution of the genre. In other words, they are proud about their product and have all the arguments at hand to instantly reply to any interviewer why they chose to do a certain thing. Blizzard feels like they are afraid (and maybe they are - of the shareholders, not the players) and want us to "think" they trust their product, but who knows what goes on in there.

Even being a free game vs diablos 3000000 dollar expansion i expect PoE 2 to bring in more revenue as a free game cause its just in a different stratosphere then this joke of a game blizzard released and is trying to fix but one fix breaks 5 other things. I feel like D4 will come out on top this time, I don't have high hopes on GGGs part. The leagues nowadays are pretty lackluster or even bad. The overall feel of poe2 is not path of exile from what I've seen, more like a reskinned D4. They will simplify the game too much, to the point that it will become a generic arpg. Forcing archetypes and streamlining everything. In poe1 you could make an immune deep delver that used vaal impurites with flasks and you took 0 dmg(only from darkness) or a 0 hp delver that could oneshot everything and went to infinity. Or a lab runner with 900 ms. Unintuitive stuff, that you felt smart by figuring it out. We will lose that in POE2. It makes sense in a business perspective (a wider audience), but it feels like that the game will become what's D4 was on release, 4-5 days of playsessions per league, rinse and repeat.

Plus vessel of hatred is going double down on MMO aspects and d4 just isn't fun there's no challenge there's no thinking, the only good part was the campaign which they allow you to skip and now let you get to lvl 100 in 2 hours now to do all of the no end game they have

From what I see, the fact that all these other games have been inspired by D2, the game designers at Blizzard have the mistaken impression that they are still able to produce a game like that. "It's our game that they are pulling from so we must right about things regardless of what the community says. Obviously we know best. We made D2." That is the problem they have to solve. Blizz on the other hand has turned into a garbage factory of self important sycophants, they have focus all their attention on cosmetics that are WAY over priced when they should have spent time on SKILLS,MAPS, and BOSS's with a fun yet challenging end game. Each of these companies has truly earned whatever HATE or LOVE it's gained because this stuff doesn't just fall out of the sky.. I've tried launch and each season of D4 and I just can't do it anymore, my main is Sorc and it's clear that D4 devs just don't play there game and don't understand the power fantasy of Casters , not to mention the the hilarious cosmetics for Sorc... I will not git blizz any more $$$ unless they fix the core game and honestly by the time that happens I'll most likely be in a rotation of POE2 and LE.. Blizz's ignorance and arrogance is finally catching up with them... Although we all know there are enough normies that will continue to support blizz no matter what..

I mean, after the fiasko with Diablo Immoral, we realized Blizzard and Activision are way out of touch with their own player base. You would imagine they would try to change things and listen to the feedback of their hardcore players who were invited to playtest. But no....they just don't care that much. They want to make money and it seems they are willing to do that with the least amount of work. Only when player numbers dropped drastically, and they realized people would buy their shit any more, they started to implement the changes... I, too, was part of the closed beta, and I tried diablo immortal, but I am tired of this company. I had enough of their greed and half asses attempts and excuses.

I think painting Diablo 4 as a failure is a mistake. It's a multi-billion dollar game. I don't think D4 ever saw PoE as a competitor at all, they made a cinematic, highly refined campaign. That was the selling point, a 20-25 hour experience that you have the option of doing some things later, but you don't have to to get the full value out of the game. And that makes complete sense for a game with a box price, if I spend $60 on a game, I don't want to have to play 200 hours to get the best experience. I don't want to grind a mageblood in every game I play.

While PoE offering hard and massive amount of mechanics , Diablo 4 offering fast food gameplay where you just getting easy understanding mechanics and gameplay. So it’s on a player to choose if they wanna sit with opened guides and tips and all other things or chooses to just playing without any challenges and needs to follow any guides.

I don't think comparing PoE 2 to Diablo 4 is a good idea. When finally PoE 2 will be released Diablo 4 will be a 2 years old game with a major failure in its core architecture (and probably still without a real endgame). Why even talks about Diablo 4? - in the PoE world streamers make a talks about the game, discussions, interviews with the developers. Blizzard makes they own "campfire" where Blizzard workers talk to each other?? For me this is a proof that nobody cares about Diablo 4.

  • @circaen

In the last 10 - 15 years Blizzard has really thrown away a lot of human capital. They don't seem to take expertise as seriously as they once did. They don't seem to learn from their past mistakes. As fun as D4 can be for a few days, many of it's biggest issues are rehashed from D3 or they learned the wrong lessons. POE is a game where people who loved a genre became experts & are now using everything they learned to make the best version of an ARPG they can dream up. I don't see Diablo 4 as having a chance to compete in the long run. I believe POE 2 is going to hit enough of an accessibility threshold to really dent D4.

And to show you the obvious mistake in your claim, since you probably don’t know how to play PoE, majority of PoE players don’t even grind for items they farm currency barely ever picking up items, to strategize a deterministic craft (or purchase off trade) unlike diablo’s dumb down basic crafting system with no strategy just a pure slot machine gamble. And here’s another thing for you to consider, how do you farm your items in D4? Most efficient is to kill helltide boss over and over non stop. With multiple broken builds in the area she’s shot down in 3 hits. It’s dumb, it’s not challenging, it’s far from fun, it’s repetitive and most likely not even rewarding. Season 3 actually had some good ideas and i can see why they thought this was a good thing to try. The story was fascinating. The issue was it was just too much to get into everything. Season 2 was freaking amazingly fun to level but rngesus struck again. Moving the codexes to the codex library that are reusable. Having 925 drop at a guaranteed monster level is great. Tempering and mastering are interesting ideas. The issue is still too much rngesus. Wth is with greater affixes being so rare and when you do get one it’s shit? Tempering having the worst possibilities with greater weights. I’m looking forward to poe 2 but I’m probably going to stick with d4 for a while.
