Saw Maiden in Warsaw on Sunday night. Blood Brothers, Ace's High, Hallowed, Fear and and my two favourite Blaze era songs went down extremely well. If it's what people want to hear, and the stage show matches, well nowt wrong with that. Saw Priest the month before at the Mystic Festival. Sure, I've heard Breaking the Law and Living After Midnight 000's of times since they first came out, but for casual fans, they're songs that they're going to recognise. Bear in mind, that BtL and LaM are encore songs. (They played Rocka Rolla & Turbo Lover mid set!)

That's true. Some people go to shows all the time and have been for decades; for others it's a rarity. For the latter, they want to hear the classics and would be extremely disappointed with a show featuring unusual deep cuts. This setlist though puzzles me, since Maiden seems to be fully aware that most people that go to their shows don't want to hear new songs (Bruce even says "I promise, no new songs!" sometimes), and Senjutsu wasn't well received, particularly not that sorta milquetoast country western-esque song they released as the first teaser for the latest album. Soooo many people heard that and were crestfallen. The rest of the album was better but I don't need to hear anything from Senjutsu live or studio. It's not a terrible album but it's a terrible Maiden album (I haven't listened to it again since it was released; didn't plan on not listening to it again but the fact that I never did speaks volumes).

I think the reason why Blood Brothers is so overplayed by Iron Maiden is that Steve Harris is emotionally attached to that particular song. He wrote the song when his father passed away and it's about the experience of losing one's father. It's been said again and again that Maiden's setlist is dictated by whatever Steve Harris wants to play, and additionally management mandates several live staples by contract. This is what it is.

The light show and display of professionalism with the musicianship was jaw dropping. I’m not a huge fan by any means either. My 2 favorite albums of there’s are Threshold of a Dream and to All My Children’s Children’s Children that don’t have a single radio song on either album and just happened to come out the same year as well as the same year as King Crimsons debut.

Brilliant show as always guys! Great and interesting choice for discussion. For people like us who have been Maiden fans forever, everything you all said was spot on. What I would add to the mix is that bands like Maiden get first time fans at every show, especially older fans bringing their kids to the show for the first time. My daughter went to her first ever show on The Book of Souls tour. I absolutely loved it as they played loads of new tracks, and my daughter loved it too, but was a little disappointed as a load of 80s hits were missed off. I guess it's a real balancing act, especially on the hits tours to satisfy both demographics. I'm totally onside with you guys, newer fans, maybe not so much? I guess for newer fans, imagine going back in time to your first ever Maiden show in the 80s? That's the experience (or close to), that they get. That also gives them longevity getting newer fans on board I guess?

Interesting topic, I was just looking at Slipknot's set list for this tour and there are a lot of songs they are playing forever and I was literally like, there like almost 75% - 80% songs I wish they would leave alone, "Spit It Out" and "Surfacing" are the first, I'm sick of hearing them, "Wait and Bleed", "Psychosocial", "All Out Life", "Custer", etc.

The first 2 bands i thought of when seeing what the show was about were KISS and Anthrax. Same damn setlist year after year, tour after tour. And it's not like they couldn't find any other good songs in their catalogues. 100% agree with Chris when he says that Anthrax needs to lay off the covers. I can't stand ''Got the time''.. and never really cared for it from the beginning. Persistence of time has tons of other better songs. Antisocial and Got the time are in Anthrax's top 4 or 5 songs in terms of number of times they have played them live. Two covers. As for KISS, well i can't just pick one. Rock N roll all nite, Detroit rock city, i was made for loving you, etc.. same thing every time. They even still have the same props and stage show as in the 80s. I understand they are appealing to the masses, and not me who has bought all the albums, but it's annoying. The masses who probably don't even realize that it's not Ace and Peter on stage. Oh. Forgot Cold Gin. Cannot stand that one. It would be cool if they did like Priest and started digging out songs they haven,t played in forever.. Exciter, I've had enough, etc.. Although Paul can't sing those anymore, so it won't be happening :\ I think i'll go watch Bruce's band.

Maiden should revamp their entire show. When they did the 7th Son setlist tour I was disappointed. I never want to hear them play Aces High, 2 Minutes To Midnight, Evil That Men Do, Iron Maiden, Fear of the Dark, Sign of the Cross, Wicker Man, Blood Brothers, Prisoner, Wasted Years, Bring Your Daughter To The Slaughter, Can I Play WIth Madness... stay away from all of those. I know the last few aren't played much, but they haven't aged well. I feel the opposite about Priest. I have always loved Living After Midnight (1st real rock song I learned on guitar) and could drop Breaking The Law and You've Got Another Thing Coming. AC/DC should drop You Shook Me, Thunderstruck, Dirty Deeds, Shot Down In Flames and Hell Ain't A Bad Place To Be. The first two are just for the soccer mom crowd. I liked them for a long time, but want some variety. The last three are just staples they always play. They've been done to death. Add some songs from Flick or Fly or play Ballbreaker or Stiff Upper Lip. There are some deep tracks from both the Bon and Brian era that could be done.

Great show, and you guys already picked most of the songs I can't stand either, however, here's a few more that were missed in my opinion: 1. Metallica: Sad But True (never, ever, ever, want to hear this song played ever again, period!) 2. Megadeth: A Tout Le Monde (always went to grab a beer or t-shirt when this song was played) 3. AC/DC: T.N.T. (I know they have to play it but it's so overplayed I can't stand it anymore) Lastly on the topic of Maiden, it would be so nice to see them bust out songs from the first two albums, or even say Somewhere in Time, or one of the few good songs off No Prayer. I was able to see Bruce on his speaking tour this past March, and a lot of the questions he was asked was about their setlist being the same old songs... would be nice if the band actually listened to the fans.

You guys must have all loved the Nostradamus tour then! That tour was my first experience seeing Priest live. I got free tickets, so I said why not. I waited all night to hear Living After Midnight...crickets. The only song I recognized that night (admittedly, I know Priest WAAAY better today than back then), was the only song they did for their small encore: You've Got Another Thing Comin'. I felt ripped off, even though I paid nothing. :) If there was a silver lining, they played a song that apparently they had not played for a while, called Rock Hard, Ride Free. I had never heard the song, but it was so memorable live that it led me to explore Judas Priest's catalog further. Fortunately, I was able to see them again with Deep Purple years later, and that show was epic. Total redemption! :)

I’m glad Pete said it because that is one of my pet peeves at concerts. People playing non stop material in the parking lot of the band they are about to go see. And of all the signature songs that they are going to play. Why do people do that? You may as well take it a step further and listen to a bootleg from the show on the same tour so you can hear exactly the show you’re about to go see and diminish your live experience even more.

To Chris' point, I don't like the pace they play Hallowed Be Thy Name live with Nicko. He is an beast, but he plays it way too fast. It kills the dynamics and that anthemic pace. There's none of that "2-hands-swinging-the hi-hat" that Clive did. The Maiden song I'd drop would be Fear of the Dark. Even though Trooper, Hills, Number, IM are played far more often, I understand the reason why they do those. But FOTD?!!? In its place, they could play both Evil That Men Do + Flight of Icarus (to name 2 hits , but still not constant on the setlist) which are way better.

I will say in regards to the Maiden complaints, while yes, they are lazy with their setlists, I have to give Bruce Dickinson credit for being willing to sing songs that the band made with Blaze, because it's rare to see a vocalist return to a band and perform anything that the band made with their replacement vocalist. When the MK II lineup of Deep Purple reunited, Ian Gillan refused to sing anything that they made with David Coverdale, and the same can be said for David Lee Roth not singing anything Van Halen made with Sammy Hagar, Halford not singing anything Priest made with Tim Owens, Ozzy not singing anything Sabbath made with the other singers, even Dio on any of the times he reunited with Iommi and Butler, he didn't sing anything Sabbath made with Tony Martin. Dickinson, from day one of his return was performing songs they made with Bayley, because he's a team-player and he knows it's about the show and the quality of the song, not just showcasing his (and Di'Anno's) era. The only other singer I can recall who's done the same is Joey Belladonna singing at least one song ("Only") that Anthrax made with John Bush. Just thought I'd put my two cents in.

So to finally be able to hear the songs like Aces High, Mama Im Coming Home, Hallowed, Crazy Train, and all that live was really cool, but i can see how it can get old when youve seen these bands multiple times over the years and those songs are at almost every show. Would I have enjoyed some deeper cuts, hell yeah, but for the first time seeing a couple of my favorite bands live, it was really cool to experiance those songs in a live setting for the first time, and not just in studio or on a live album

Funny Show guys, but you are killing me. Firstly oohhhh to be somewhere where you can see your fav bands all the time to the point you get sick of seeing them play ANY song. Secondly the reason I'm a metal head in the first place is I heard 'living after midnight' on the radio in 1980 (or maybe saw on TV) as a 14 year old so immediately went out and bought British Steel and Stained Class and never looked back, before this I was into AC/DC, Deep Purple, Status Quo etc. Thirdly I still love 2 Minutes to Midnight and Hallowed be Thy Name, both 5 top Maiden songs and they are my fav band of all time. Penultimately can I say I actually like the "Whistle Song". And lastly, yeah we all get sick to death of songs because they are overplayed by everyone else, but I cant hate a band playing it live and you know that of course the average punter wants to hear it at the concert. So funny, highly entertaining show guys. PS Pete, don't ever get rid of the HVS from your programming. PPS, To get around this playing the same old - same old I went to a Midnight Oil concert once (final ever tour... until the next reunion tour) and they had a spinning wheel with their entire catalogue on it and just spun the wheel and played whatever came up. Excellent!

An awesome HVS show except for the Overkill bit, ouch that hurt me, Chris. 😆😆 I agree you could do a whole show just on Iron Maiden. Heaven Can Wait polluted the show for way longer than it should have. I would kill to see Back in the Village make the set list. I've always found AC/DC's The Jack a momentum killer, I'd rather hear Ride On or Soul Stripper or Squealer. Sweating Bullets was a GREAT pick. I'd drop A tout la Monde if it was up to me (which is isn't 😆😆) Jet City Woman by Queensryche would be one of my picks, sheesh! a mediocre track at best. Alice in Hell by Annihilator would be another for me and I know Jeff Waters is sick of it as he said so last time I saw them. I'd much rather they play something else these days. I recall going to watch Evile a number of years ago, they did 2 tours close together, the 1st was to support their 3rd album, the 2nd wasn't supporting any album so they decided to do mostly deep cuts. It was one of the best gigs I've been to. I wish more bands did this.
