Yeah, for your friends that actually thought you bought the Helios lens because they saw your phone picture, they're either not really diverse/experienced photographers or have never touched the Helios (or any real craft lens for that matter) lens. Or just saw your picture in a text message and didn't really zoom into it at all. The edge detection on the p40 is still far from great. Any photographer that sees these fake portrait modes on a phone can instantly tell it's artificial. And I'm not even talking about pixel peeping. You can just immediately tell if you have a decent enough screen in front of you.

It makes me so sad that so many reviewers say they will not recommend this phone to anyone outside of the US just because of lack of GMS. So you are telling me that you would not recommend it to any tech savy friends of yours? I surely do. It is not that hard to use apk pure and amazon store to download the apps you can't find on the Huawei store, and we can expect that more and more apps will make the jump there as time goes on.

I don't think you were listening. He said it in the video. The average consumer, American or not, may not bother doing that. If I'm paying ttay amount of money, I shouldn't be bothered to tinker at my phone. Personally, I can do it, I have the knowledge but what about the average Joe?

App finder, Patel search and Huawei app gallery have all the apps available like full Google play. I'm really happy with Huawei p40 Pro and for getting rid of that Google all stuff

I have the p40 Pro in the UK and I love it some games I used to play I don't miss and I found new games I didn't think I would ever look are even fun third party app stores are the best way to get more games and apps a bit like aurora store

I quite like EMUI but drives me mad no landscape mode and clearing notifications doesn't clear notifications on the apps! Nice phone shame about the politics! Mate 20 X for me still then!

I cant say i`m a fan of emui mate (even though yes it does have some good points ) , or the phone for that matter , After my P30 pro 8gb /256 gb model , i would not buy another ! It annoys me that much i thought about giving it away ! seriously ! it cost me a thousand + bucks brand new 6 months ago ! While huawei does get some things right , like the camera is quite good and the 5x zoom is very cool , battery life is pretty good . Some things are still very very average though imo , software does have its issues , even huawei apps , some of which are less than good even some advertised phone features refuse to work . elements of the phone user experience and hardware design , imo are seriously wanting , the microscopic notification bar and its text and icons , the in display speaker/ lack of stereo speakers. Mine clears the notifications when i tap on them to view them lol , and they do not come back ... . pinch to zoom sometimes freezes the phone up and i have to turn the phone off and turn it back on again to unfreeze it , no its not my connection because my galaxy note and S8+ do not have this problem . Maybe mine is just a serious dud , i wanted to like it , but it is a disappointment .. All the best with yours mate .

Good review. But honestly as photographers perspective for a blur like helios 44 There should be a fall off blur instead of separating the subject to background. I think edge detection is good but adding a little fall off blur which every high aperture lens does make the true portrait photo. Example 3:34 your left shoulder should be slightly blurred off instead of putting it in focus thats what normal lenses do to roll off. but its a good camera pictures look great and sharp. I think the reds are slightly off to magentas. but i think shooting raw would be really good :)

Does this work with APKs for Pokemon Go and Apple Music? Those are the main two apps I would need on this.

All the people suggesting you don't buy anything from China, wakey wakey! You are aware that there are very few phones not made in China, aren't you? Your lovely shiny iPhones, designed in California, made in China...it's on the back of the box if you care to look. Samsung phones...they are a Chinese company, they are made in China. The vast majority of the tech stuff you buy will be at the very least assembled in China, so if you want a phone at all, good luck finding one that isn't made in China!

Just like, wasting the day away with info on 99% incremental upgrades/changes and mostly software based, on products from the most resouce hungry business on the planet. Us consumers on bad infodrugs pretty much, fooling ourselves that our lives depend on 90hz vs 120hz display on a phone? Really? All these videos do is present us info on a choice and then we ponder it like crazy, as if it had actual impact on our lives. I'm ashamed of watching really.

The companies want to make you feel like you "have" to have 120hz or 90hz, you simply don't. For gaming yes on a big screen sure, but on a small device with lame undemanding games on it, not worth it.

If they didint put that double punch hole on the screen this would be the nicest looking panel, the bezels are practically non existent. What an amazing screen.

The camera is good, really good....until you start recording video with it. All in all, obviously a great phone but the price & Google services problems - makes the last year's P30 Pro much better choice and value at the moment

The problem is they focus on unnecessary things that rises the price if the smartphones. Like curving the display all around that rises the price dramatically. And many unnecessary cameras in front and back ( we don't need 4 or 5 cameras). And at last but not important is the aluminum frame. They could easily make it out of plastic and make it feels premium.

I thought the fingersprint scanner was 30% Bigger not faster...

The new Huawei P40 Pro its looks pretty awesome, more than the S20 Ultra. Honestly, No one should be worried about Google Service. there are many options and store's to download it. choose smartly.

Powerhouse of a phone. But you can't ignore that pill cutout, and that price. Reviewers really need to stop praising 4 figure phones.

There is APKpure, Amazon app store and the App Gallery. Huawei has poured BILLIONS into the App Gallery. You'll even find some popular apps in there now like Snapchat, Tiktok etc. Plus I've see a review add a browser short cut to Google maps and it literally works just like the app and you can still sign in to Google. Same for Google drive. So what is there not to recommend? We shouldn't be so reliant on a monopolistic company like Google. It's bad. If something happens to Google what are you going to do. I for one am glad Huawei is doing their own thing. We NEED alternatives so that innovation can be pushed. I was basically a Google ambassador. But I refuse to give up such great phones for Google. I'll happily even live without it. There are plenty great alternative apps. Once you own a Huawei phone everything else just becomes a disappointment. So....goodbye Google. Huawei is coming for you.

SDav21 Yeah.. If I want Chinese Spyware i’m sure i’ll get a Huawei device. Also APKPure isn’t a verified method of installing apps, you could easily download something running external code in the background. Regardless.. If Google dosen’t hold the monopoly the apps you’re using likely have Google trackers installed so either way they win.

No stereo speakers - it works great, loud and clear. Very few of us care about stereo, more about quality and volume. Still FHD display - My N10 is FHD and it makes no difference to viewing. QHD was simply marketing for the youth that fails to realise that FHD+ on a 6-inch device is retina friendly. Software sucks - software is much better than Samsung, offering more useful features. No Google apps - There are workarounds and it isn't perfect but for me, I can cope easily and it may even be better. No LPDDR5 RAM - The Exynos s20 Ultra has LPDDR5 and that sucks at everything. It is about optimising not about just spec chasing and having a poor user experience. Pros Only cameras - Yes an easy win over the S20 Ultra on photos. The Ultra has better video but not significant. 65-watt fast charging making the s20 Ultra look slow. 45-watt wireless charging, finally wireless charging is useful. Upscaling video from 24fps to 60fps on media and 60fps to 120fps on games. The ability to watch 720p at 1080p. A chip that is 25% faster than the Exynos s20 we have in Europe. 3D face recognition. It is a crime that the $1400 S20 Ultra still has 2D recognition. You can use as a remote control due to the inbuilt transmitter. It is cheaper in Europe by £100 phone for phone compared to the s20 line. Other stuff but I have made my point. In Europe, the P430 Pro Plus kills the Exynos S20 Ultra, there is simply no competition. In the US you get the Snapdragon so a closer call and down to pros -v- cons of each device. Still a win for the P40 from my perspective.

Wow phones

They can wow the market all they want. But here in the USA, it's DOA without Google apps. Will that hurt it's sales, yes absolutely!

You've got the right idea. The standard S20 with the Exynos is crap. 4 hrs screen on time in 60hz mode? For a £900 flagship? Nah. The performance of the Exynos chip is always sadly lackluster. It's such a pity, actually my Galaxy Tab S6 is brilliant and the battery life is superb, but I've had 3 S20's from my network now, and I've had to send them all back. If you put it in 120hz mode, you'll be charging it 3 times a day. All 3 the network sent me were all like it? Definitely don't bother with the S20.

Three biggest downsides in my opinion: the 4 curves, EMUI and the hole punch. EMUI is also well known for automatically lowering your games resolution to preserve battery/performance(due to Kirin's underpowered GPU) even if you set the resolution to maximum. The game would still render at lower quality.

Lowered game quality is due to the fact that game apps are usually better optimised for Snapdragon and renders less textures on chipsets with Mali GPU.

The exclusion of stereo speaker is a bummer

I'm a fan of Huawei but the dual curve glass on my P30 Pro still give me typos and annoyance to this day.. Huawei's answer to this? ADD TWO MORE FUCKIN CURVED CORNERS!

You talk about it not having 120hz but then then don't consider all the facts. They did it for battery life. The Samsung can do 120hz but then only at 1080p. Once you go to QHD then it goes right down to 60hz. Huawei struck the best balance. You get a high refresh rate AND a high enough PPI count. You are then never at a point where you have to choose between the 2. You always get smoothness AND great pixel density AND battery preservation. That to me sounds like a win over the competition.

Yeah, the battery life in 120hz on the S20 is absolutely dire. Exynos battery management is terrible anyway, I do not want a flagship phone that I'm having to charge 3 times a day! I've got the P40 Pro on pre-order, I don't think it will disappoint.

That Spin effect in Portrait mode has been in the S10+ , Note 10+ and now the s20 ultra

This is the most esthetically beautiful phone. The curved glass and glossy angular back are delicious eye candy.

People are so easily tricked when they're asked to judge if a photo was taken with a DSLR or a phone...

I won't consider "high refresh rate" screen a bummer or a must because you literally can't do anything with it except drain your battery faster. High refresh rate screens are still a gimmick for phones.

Google is a deal breaker for a lot of people these days and the US is not allowing it on the best android phone on the market because its a China brand fair trade my arse.
