8:42 ok, what your Patreon member told you is roughly correct. The 2 stringed instruments are called Morin Khuur (Horsehead Fiddle), traditionally the strings are made from the tail hair of a horse, the “Male” or thicker string has 150 hairs, the “Female” or thinner string has 130. They are not tuned to specifically mimic a horse’s whinny, it takes practice & skill, because mimicking a horse’s whinny or Neigh on it symbolizes a Master Morin Khuur player. The 3 stringed instrument is the Tovshuur (Mongolian Lute), and I haven’t yet learned the specifics on it’s strings or tradition as of now. While they do throat sing in this video, it is just one of 3 “styles” of Mongolian throat singing, that style is called Kargyraa, the other 2 are Koomei and Sygyt. I have always been fascinated with Mongolia & Mongolian history around the 12th Century, and when I discovered the HU, they became my favorite band. Oh….. I’m a 59 year old US Army Cold War era Veteran that’s Irish/German/Cherokee , all Warrior cultures, no wonder Mongolia & the HU fascinate me 😉

They combine Mongolian folk with rock/metal, using throat singing, and traditional Mongolian instruments along with standard guitar, bass, and drums. The 2 string being played with a bow is a Morin Khuur or horsehead fiddle. The 3 string being played like a guitar is a Tovshuur. Awesome live too, seen them open for Halestorm a couple years ago. Gala , Enkush , and Jaya throat sing, with the first 2 also on Morin Khuur. Temka plays the Tovshuur. They are the 4 main members. Also have 4 touring members, Ono on percussion, Jamba on guitar, bassist Davaa, and drummer Odko. Wolf Totem is one of several songs that have been redone with new English lyrics and guest vocalists. Jacoby Shaddix (Papa Roach) joined them for this remake. Lzzy Hale (Halestorm) on Song of Women, Danny Case (From Ashes to New) on Yuve Yuve Yu, Wm Duvall (Alice In Chains) on This is Mongol, and the song Black Thunder with Serj Tankian (System of a Down) and DL from Bad Wolves. They have also covered Metallica's Sad But True, in Mongolian.

Another great East meets West collaboration is The Hu Band and LP with Mother Nature.

Throat singing is wild. Wilder is that they can do it in a high tone as well. At the same time. Check out "Song of Women" The Hu recorded with Lzzy Hale. Avi Kaplan did it a few times with Pentatonix, and there is a video on line somewhere of him doing his "overtone" version of "The Lion Sleeps Tonight".

If you will notice, Temka's guitar-like tovshuur is shaped like a drawn bow with an arrow notched, ready to fire. So cool.

The Hu means The People, the Mongolian Nation. The horseman flies the Black Banner of War of Gengis Khan's dreaded armies. His totem was the wolf. When the band sings that they will strike the enemy with the wrath of Heaven, they really mean the wrath of God. Heaven, known as Tengris in mongolian, is the monotheistic god of several mongolian and turkish populations. The mongolian warrior and his war horse are one, a symbol of both freedom and military prowess. Metal horses replaced real ones, but the ancient battle song is still remembered! Throat singing/guttural chant is used by many modern Metal singers, especially in Black Metal.

Hu alone doesn't mean anything. It is just root word for human in Mongolian

I love the Hu band and have been a fan for a few years. The large horse head fiddle instrument is called the Morin Khuur. I enjoy all their great songs but admit that my favorite is the ballad Mother Nature with LP. 🎶🤘🔥💜🔥🤘🎶 Happy to see you enjoy this wonderful performance. Ghengis Khan obviously lives on in the passion of his descendants.❤️👍 🥰🥰Hugs from a Canadian Dear🇨🇦

welcome to the world of folk metal we have everything from mongolian throat singing to African traditional music you can headbang to Here's my list of folk metal bands that spans all inhabited continents Diablo Huma- Equador Hiddenland- Equador Cemican- Mexico MiracleOfSound-Ireland (look up his songs Sirona, Grainn Mahoil and Tale of Cu Chullain) Alestorm- Scotland (it's pirate metal but some people count it?) Tyr- Faroe Islands Percival- Poalnd/ Pan slavic Arkona-Russia Rune-Serbia Mägo de Oz-Spain Po' Metra Crijeva- Croatia (the band name means half a meter of guts) Manntra-Croatia Brkovi- Croatia (more of a punk band but look up their song "Ovce" a MAGICAL blend of rap, metal a, punk and folk influences) Metaklapa- Croatia (This one is weird ... they do covers of metal songs in traditional Dalmatian singing style .. for example they did Aces high) Dubioza Kolektiv- Bosnia & Hertzegovina (DO NOTE! This band is called a band with no genre for a reason! they varry from Regge R&B To Folk-Metal-Punk ... compare their "Space song" and "No escape from Balkans") Arka'n Asrafokor- TOGO (also worth of note is Skinflint from Botswana but they don't ussualy have much folk elements) Al-Namrood- Saudi Arabia (They played metal when it was punishable by death... IT DON'T GET MORE HARDCORE THAN THAT!) Hassak- Kazakhstan (it's an ethno band but listen to their song Amanat and tell me it don't belong on a metal concert) The Hu- Mongolia Nine Treasures - China/Inner Mongolia DreamSpirit- China Wagakki band- Japan Nini music- Taiwan BLOODYWOOD- India Alien weaponry- New Zealand Shepherds Reign- New Zealand/Samoa

Love folk metal - thanks for the list! Add Dirty Shirt from Romania (they call what they do folk core) or Negură Bunget (I've heard them described as Transylvanian death metal - what I've heard is amazingly atmospheric), Bucovina, who were my intro to folk metal so they hold a special place in my heart. Also Baradj from Tartarstan.

Good on ya guy! Here’s some stuff I read. Mongolia is the most sparsely populated country. 30% of the people are nomadic. They have never been conquered. Genghis Kahn and company took over more contiguous territory than anyone. If you joined them their reputation protected you. If not, you died. The president of Mongolia was one of the bikers.
