So many people on this show reject architectural advice and go with their boring, conventional ideas. That house will look tacky and need updating every ten years because all of its character comes from the interior design. That upstairs kitchen/living area would have been absolutely spectacular, regardless of whatever furniture or decorations they chose.

I totally agree with the majority of the comments here. This couple said that they wanted a modern home but what they actually created was very pedestrian and in fact a little bit 70s with those awful angled tongue and groove panels. Every contemporary home they saw, they seemed to love, but you could tell that they were concerned that they ddin't have the budget to replace their old fashioned furniture to make a cohesive design. It was evident that Derek was worried to death about money and this reflected in his choices. It was obvious too that Christine thought herself an architect, but didn't really have the foundation of architectural knowledge or even a natural prowess. I couldn't understand why she wanted to be so covert in the kitchen, an open kitchen means that your guests will come and help and hence create a social and enjoyable experience instead of shutting yourself off from your guests. There may be some control issues there, especially judging from the way she reacted to input. To call themselves Hippies was an insult to Hippies who have an expanded consciousness and reject this kind of convention. It's a very sad outcome, I feel bad for people who are stuck in an era and are afraid to let go and enjoy something else. I also feel bad for a couple who can't listen to music together, but most of all i feel bad for me, i watch this show for design inspiration and i didn't get any here.

Growing up surrounded by hippies, which to me, observing, was code for "I don't clean up after myself, I'm too cool for that." is just incredibly annoying. 'Hippie' usually means 'sloppy'. In dress and design, but MORE THAT ANYTHING, INTELLECTUALLY. I live on the West Coast of the US. The amount of "Kinda, sorta like, you know, like, like yeah, like you know what I mean? Cool..." I have to put up with is enough to make one ill. People who are REALLY different, ORIGINAL, creative, don't run around shoving their uniqueness in everyone's face. This was a fascinating episode, to have such tension between the experts and homeowners. The couple Say they love modern and Say they love to entertain, but the reality is not what they Say (for example, having the public spaces divided among two floors is awkward for guests). To be fair, the owners did listen, but chose to retain their mundane, chopped-up house. I like that the experts were honest that they were disappointed about the results, but it is actually very instructive to the viewer to see what is basically a failure.

I have noticed its really hard for Brits to really embrace open floor plan modern. My best dinner parties were those that have the kitchen all the open to the main living space because guests love to help with the cooking which is more than half the fun of throwing a dinner party with guests is to get them on board with helping with the cooking. I have noticed for the most part..... this is not a British concept like it is here in America. Cooking with guests while also conversing with them at the same time. Americans really defined modern open floor plans and cooking with their guests. Its takes the dinner part to a whole new level that is really fun and enjoyable. British people I have noticed for the most part the British like very formal closed off rooms that separate tasks opposed to others being drawn into the tasks.

I think they're like a lot of people. They love the look of striking modern architecture & decor, especially the more expensive/posh versions of that esthetic in the interior spaces; but when it gets right down to it, it's not what they want to live in. They appreciate the simplistic beauty, or daring color schemes, but it's not what they want to look at every day. They start out truly thinking that their style is "modern" because they do like what they see in Architectural Digest, but wind up creating the exact opposite because it isn't really the style they want for their every day lives. If they own a doughty floral couch set they want to try to fit into a minimalist/modern family room design in the beginning, then they obviously weren't tending toward the modern esthetic to begin with.

She didn't want to move the kitchen upstairs because she didn't want to carry up the shopping. Ever heard of a dumbwaiter? Now when they entertain, they and guests will be carrying all the crap up the stairs and after a gather, it has to be carried down. Then there's the bit about the house being built in the wrong position: are there not building inspectors who come on site and inspect every stage of construction? A foundation inspector in the U.S. confirms whether or not concrete forms are in the right position and the rebar is correctly tied BEFORE it is poured.

To be honest, I like rooms, having a door to close behind you, beeing by yourself. It is not only heating issues why we have rooms. I also like different lighted rooms, a kitchen needs some windows but a snuggly living room not. All that open plan huge living areas might be aery and modern but not cozy. The balance for each individual person is to find. Flexible elements like sliding doors are very useful. In this example the upside down version would have worked better. But I agree with them, it has to fit their needs.

I don't know why this couple agreed to engage with the experts. They were not open to new ideas or change and were very set in their ways. I thought their home turned out very bland and ordinary. It's a home I would not personally buy. For a couple in their 60's/70's it seems an extraordinary decision to have the kitchen and living room separated by a flight of stairs. I wonder how Derek with his bad back went climbing those stairs? The good thing about this episode is that it demonstrates the outcome of not embracing the free advice given to them. If Peirce was short with them it is understandable. They wasted his time that some other couple could have benefited from.

That's t they want, and that's not even what they built. The kitchen was the best them, but honestly, look at their not sparkly rooms or "guest rooms" that nobody can stay in, that is how they want to live they should have been open with that and taken advice. They are just lying to themselves and that is why this was a design failure, not just because they wouldn't change.
