Friends' Rachel Green, Monica Geller, and Phoebe Buffay are all beautiful - but the show singled out only one as the "hot one". For a long time, there was a trend on screen where, within any group of female friends - regardless of what any of them looked like - one was always upheld as the hot friend (pretty much always because she was the main love object of the story.) But this trope split off from other ‘hot girl’ tropes for one key reason: her friendships. So where did the ‘hot one’ trope even come from, and how did Rachel (with the help of Monica and Phoebe) change it for the better? (And have we finally gotten rid of it altogether?) Let’s take a deeper look at the ‘hot one’ trope!

A male version of this trope exists as well. I think a Take on that is warranted. There are differences in how the Hot Girl is treated versus the Hot Guy.

@sammyvictors2603 they describe it early on in the video - but basically "female friendships aren't that deep and secretly everyone is competing, usually for a man." XD; I was listening to a researched video essay yesterday on the difference between male and female friendships (this is all largely due to socialization than anything inherent to our biology btw) and it seems male friendships tend to be more "surface-level" with an emphasis on shared experience (in the physical, active sense), rather than developed through conversation and deep connection, which is encouraged in girls from a young age.

As far as Friends is concerned, one of the main creative forces in the show was a woman. Marta Kaufman was a (co-)creator, showrunner, writer, executive producer and casting director of the show.
"Hot" is not about looks it's about behavior (or perceived behavior). Rachel was the popular cheerleader, Monica was the fat friend, and Phoebe was the weird homeless girl. Regardless of how they looked, Rachel is perceived as fitting the cool girl trope.

Exactly haha there isn't exactly a shortage of times the show points out that Monica and Phoebe are beautiful. Like Chandler said to Mon, "You're the most beautiful woman in most rooms." The pretty one trope usually implies that she is from a privileged background and didn’t have to work a day in her life. Neither Monica nor Phoebe had that luck. Rachel did in the beginning, which is why she is the 'pretty girl' of friends.
I always thought that Rachel, Monica and Phoebe were just as gorgeous, yet Rachel was the designated "hot" one. It's likely because she was more into her looks than the other two.

That's actually a good thing to point out, but that's also why she's designated "the spoiled one" or "shallow". She gets dragged for that on and off screen. It didn't come without a price, just saying! And she hates it when people call her that. When Ross puts it on the infamous list, she admits that she knows she is that but she's very insecure... I don't know how Leonard and Sandra treated their daughters, but I'm not surprised that Rachel has insecurities. And she's still a much better person than Jill and Amy. Edit: Welp, except I do know and it seemed very ... The kind of stuff that would mess you up.

Two things that singled out Rachel as the hot one were: 1. Ross was a very popular character at the time and his love for and his on again off again relationship with Rachel was central to a lot of storylines. Plus Ross was in unrequited love with Rachel for the whole first season of the show. So the idea of men being incredibly attracted to Rachel was introduced early and frequently during the series. 2. In real life Jennifer Aniston, who played Rachel Green, dated and married the guy who was considered literally one of the hottest men, if not the hottest man ever in Hollywood, Brad Pitt. If Jennifer Aniston is good looking enough to attract the attention and "commitment" of a young, hot, and famous Brad Pitt she must be the hottest "Friend." Note how in both of these examples what makes Rachel the "hot one" is not any innate personality traits she has but just popular men being interested in her both on and off screen.
@MatildeVallespinCasas
Ай бұрын
@@Shadow-zf5ucall that plus the fact that Rachel was meant to be an archetype before the casting and when Jennifer was chosen they carried on with the initial idea. In fact, Courtney Cox auditioned for the role until they realised that personality wise Monica was better match. Also, and talking about Ross, the creators wanted to make the cliché in movies of "geek gets the hot girl" and they had to play along(DS and JA are mote than average attractive people and she is not much more noticeably attractive than him for the trope to be believable)

When do you think they left the "hot one" behind? You used a clip from Riverdale which was not that long ago, Euphoria has the hot one, a lot of modern media continues this trope.
When we look at the hot girl, we only notice things on the surface, like her ability to attract men, but we fail to see the downside. While it may be flattering to have men gawk at you, it can also be disturbing, because you have no idea of the kind of attention you are attracting. The lovers of the hot girl love to control her and she is seen more as an object to her boyfriend/husband than a companion. Once Ross got with Rachel he was controlling, always belittled her for pursuing a career in fashion and in the end she gave up her dream career in Paris to be with Ross, while Monica and Phoebe ended up with supportive spouses. Marilyn Monroe divorced Jo DiMaggio after he beat her, it was said that he could not handle the pressure of being married to the pinup girl, Monroe’s next husband, Arthur Miller called her a horrible actress and a slut. As much as they try to glamorize this trope, there is tragedy on the other end.
You guys are missing one important thing. This isn't about the difference between effortlesely hot and pretty but not hot, it's about universal appeal vs more specific appeal.
You're right in that a lot of Jen's screen time revolved around her on and off relationship with David Schwimmer's Ross, which dwindles compared to Courtney's and Lisa's. I liked it when Rachel's family members were on, and she comes off very well rounded when that happens and not "the hot one". Definitely not that way...
There’s always going to be someone hooter taller and better than you
I think P&P is a bad example to use. Because Jane isn't the 'special' one, she isn't the protagonist or main love object of the story, Lizzie is, who is less pretty. It isn't an example of the 'hot one' trope but actually subverting it where Austen is saying that a woman's personality, spirit and intelligence is more important in making her interesting and finding her 'love' than her looks are. And this sentiment is repeated throughout her books, except for Emma (who would be a better example of the hot one trope between her and harriet - but also a criticism of it), the protagonist or main love object is never the prettiest in the room, it is more about her character and mind that attracts her love interest. more progressive than most stories today! The fact that it is Lizzie saying it to Jane without any jealousy also shows how the sister's don't have that cliche jealousy for each other, appreciate and can compliment each other, and that Lizzie isn't worried at all about being the 'prettiest' - even if her pride is hurt when Darcy calls her ugly, so we know she at least likes to be considered nice looking (who doesn't), this never results in a competition between women

That's something that exists in the world of the story, but the framing of the show doesn't have to express approval of that. In fact, with context in mind, of the two sisters they chose, the love interest was the "less desirable" one by that world's standards.
@LillyBelle951

@yundorphin edwina's stock plummets after she jilts anthony because people aren't sure if he wanted to call it off or if she did. it was implied both then and before when anthony wanted to call off the wedding that HE couldn't call it off because it would lessen her value in the eyes of society. her apparent value only rose once more after the queen implies that an even more eligible gentleman, a prince nonetheless, could possibly want her. this was seen by both the show and the audience as a triumphant moment for her with fans still hoping she married the prince. the framing may not express approval entirely (although it does in many ways) but it definitely doesn't express disapproval.
It also is a way to say "look we have diversity!!!" when they finally add a woman of color. When it's just hyper sexual, sassy and spunky character that traps women of color in a cartoonish character that is supposed to be next to do "sweet girl" who is often white, skinny and blonde.

One who could make the case that Joey is the hot one from the three male Friends. Although we know he has other qualities, Joey's main point of desirability is his attractiveness and while Ross and Chandler are handsome, good catches and date a lot too, they have other points that seem to "lower down" their desirability (Chandler is uptight and sardonic, Ross is neurotic and conceited). Not to mention, at least when the show started, that Matt LeBlanc fits more the conventionally attractive mold than Matthew Perry and David Schwimmer and his previous roles leaned more into the "hot guy" role than the other two.

I lived in Eastern European country and because I'm Asian, I never have been considered attractive by majority of men and all women. Therefore I could have female friends, because they seen me as no threat. Some of my "friends" even were surprised when men liked me more than them and assumed they have some yellow fever. After moving to Germany, that changed because there is no such thing like "German women are most beautiful in the world". Some women are not eager to be friends with me, since I'm above average Asian for them.Worst was when I studied computer science, and female students were never talked with me because I was surrounded by many male students
Sometimes, it is our bodies chemistry. Let’s be honest even we as women, some men just make us feel in strong chemistry once we meet compared to others. And we regularly find women in love with that man and less with other men. Regardless of looks.
This was so great!
All things being equal the brunette is usually not going to be pegged as the hot one which could be another reason that Megan got knocked down a peg in favor of Rachel .

I don’t think being brunette counts against her in this case. I think a lot of it is the framing by the show, plus the character’s personality and perceived charisma. If anything, she’s a striking contrast and visually stands out next to the others lighter features. It may not have been as common I’ve seen some examples in older media, where brunettes are The Hot One. -Archie Comics has rich brunette city girl Veronica favored over sweet blonde, small-town Betty. -Mary Tyler Moore on The Mary Tyler Moore Show is portrayed as more desirable than “frumpy” Rhoda largely due to her being approachable to the point of getting taken advantage of for favors and sitcom shenanigans. -Lois Lane was one of the first superhero love interests. -There’s a movie where brunette Joan Collins is the hot, threatening love interest over the blonde “frumpy” housewife. I keep seeing clips on Facebook of a scene where the jealous wife, in tears, slaps Joan Collins who isn’t even phased and shoots her an “I already won” smile. - Agent 99 in Get Smart is a rare example of being framed as both hot AND smart - Even in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, brunette Dorothy is not actually portrayed as any less attractive. She just doesn’t play the part of the hot girl the way Lorelei (Marilyn) does. Dorothy gets just as much attention, and the attention she does get is often actually better quality. Nowadays, we’re refusing to be limited to The Smart One or The Hot One. We can be both.

@@amazzonkaneBut most of the time 'hot' one is blond. 🙄

Oh for sure. I thought that was also the case in the Gossip Girl. Serena was just blond and tall while Blaire had all the charisma and was overall much better looking. The audacity of the writers to make Blair feel like a plane jane was absurd. Also according to my brother most guys have a bit of a fixation with blondes. His friends would usually go for the blond girls just because of the hair, even if the brunette in the group was actually prettier.

@@Evija3000 Not every guy is into it, but the bright color is eye-catching for sure. It definitely gets more attention and benefitted by cultural interest, lots of representation, or white supremacy but it’s not always good attention. There are negative stereotypes associated with it too like being dumb, easy and always approachable. Or a trophy. Traits that many creeps like. I wouldn’t be surprised if the stereotype of blonde being youthful ties in to naïveté. I also have a conspiracy that because it’s one of the most expensive hair colors to achieve that requires the most work and upkeep, especially with bleaching and the damage that can do, that it’s promoted more to get people to spend money. Vs Brown which is one of the lowest-maintenance and therefore cheapest colors.

@@Evija3000 Sounds like your brother and his friends aren't connoisseurs of beauty and are just looking for a superficial marker to fixate on .
Lisa’s character Ursula was portrayed a lot more as a hot girl on Mad About You (of course this character later crossed over to Friends but was a lot more exaggerated at that point)
It’s all how men see you - and if women are jealous of you.
There were so many ensemble cast shows back then. This type of extreme fixation on Friends really undermines what was going on back then. Friends only became big through syndication and eventually global viewership. But global viewers have no idea all the other media that was present at the time. As always when it comes to American media they get what we give them.
Hot is most often just about wardrobe. To make SMG the hot one on Buffy, they had to keep Allison Hannigan dressed as a giant toddler. I don’t think they started pushing Aniston as the hot one until she got “The Rachel,” which came with short skirts and tight sweaters.
Marnie Michaels from Girls is one of my favorite subversions of this trope
I remember I saw Love, Victor and 5 minutes in I was like, “so many pretty people”
When my Dad was alive, he always assumed that any and all of my male friends were "romantically interested" in me. He would always ask me "How do you feel about this guy? Do you LIKE him?" I usually said we were only platonic friends, and he NEVER understood that! (He was born in the 1920s)! If you want friends, you should have ONLY girls as friends, or it will lead to Disaster!
it's funny that clips of Riverdale showed up cuz even before they did, I thought of the redhead -- not sure what her name was since I only saw a few episodes, a long time ago. She isn't shown in the clips but it was hilarious to me that in the cheerleader tryouts or whatever, Veronica's dance thing is supposed to be better than the one the redhead did 😂 as a dancer myself, Veronica's was a bit painful to watch, while the other girl owned it. So even when the directors and story try to force "the hot one" on us, we as the audience can't help but laugh in the face of it
As someone not a part of the target audience of this show I found none of these people attractive as a kid and still don't (to me). Which is the reminder of how subjective manufactured beauty ideals are.
Can you go over why film made fun of students with glasses and braces? Even why some high school movies still do it now a days?
Extremely random question but what is the song playing at 2:38? Is it a royalty free track?
Hey, i love your Videos. And i wanted to ask you If you could also do like a: the psychology of Blair Waldorf? Because she is Like sooo iconic. That would be SO Great.
I love the series footage from the series Misfits.
I feel like you guys made this video, like, three times already
Most people I knew thought Monica was physically more attractive but her character was neurotic so maybe less appealling.
Can you guys please do a video on Heartbreak High series (2022)? It's got interesting characters and addresses sensitive topics among teenagers.
I am a 51-year old woman. I wish I had The Take when I was growing up.
Oddly, in reality groups of people will also try and enforce who of the group is to be defined as attractive or not, regardless of what they themselves think or what the minority in the group think independently too.
The thing is that being hot is about attitude. You can be pretty but some women just don't have the sex appeal or flirty personality to display being the hot one... That's why some girls get more attention than others despite being beautiful and with rachel and monica the thing that set them apart was personality, monica was too uptight to be the hot friend
omh alisha from misfits i love her smm
Idk they were all gorgeous to me. I always saw Monica as the most beautiful
My favourite (also looks wise) was Phoebe, although I found them all beautiful
I miss this trope
People commenting who they found most attractive of the female leads are missing the point in a hilarious way Its funny if you watch interviews with the fans in the studio audience when the show was originally filmed. The rachel love is kind of on another level frim the male fans haha
This was an interesting video and might just change society's perception for the positive
All three are beautiful but Monica was just stunning.
I always found Monica more attractive…
for a long time i thought i was broken because i never favored the "hot one". and i like glasses. and Courteney Cox will always be the One From Misfits O' Science.
lol how/why does this perfectly describe the dynamic of my female 'friendships' in middle school/high school? 😅😬👀👉👈
I see Rachel the 'cute 'one, especially if we compare her to some really gorgeous actresses. Jennifer is beautiful, but not the way that takes you breath away.
which show is 2:14 ? thanks
its just styling mostly
what is the series from 11:26?
I remember thinking it was totally unrealistic when every male character in a TV show would get attracted to the same woman. That was before I met my present day best friend, who gets hit on by every guy she knows, and my gay ass is like "What does everyone see in her?"
Unpopular opinion: I don’t think she’s all that tbh.
Hi I wonder if you can talk about the characters from the tv show Lost? 1 by 1 Like you did with the characters from Friends

It’s Rose that kicks ass, in my opinion :) I couldn’t get my eyes off her
Them all being attractive on Friends was why singling out Rachel was funny. I preferred Monica myself, but she didn't have a hairstyle named after her, which pretty much seals the deal. Women saw Rachel as the hottest of the trio just as much as men, because I'll tell you a secret: Guys don't care about hairstyles that much to make it a fad. This video doesn't talk enough about the pride in being The Hot One, and how there can be ownership in that. I think of Sex and the City (really surprised it didn't get a mention), where The Hot One was obviously Samantha. And in secret agent stories like Charlie's Angels, playing up being the Hot One in the group even helps with missions. And from the male perspective, Templeton "Face" Peck from The A-Team is literally this. (Played by Bradley Cooper in the film adaptation, also arguably "The Hot One" of the friends in the Hangover movies). So sure, everybody's beautiful in their own way, and sunshine and rainbows and kumbaya yada yada. But flattening this all out has certainly been one of the contributors to media being a lot more boring to watch and talk about, that's for sure. So let's get down to it: Saved by the Bell- The Hot One: Kelly Kapowski. Three's Company- The Hot One: Chrissy The Brady Bunch- The Hot One: Marcia. Literally drives Jan nuts! Totally Spies!- The Hot One: Clover (I don't make the rules) The Fellowship of the Ring- The Hot One: Legolas. See? A League of Their Own- The Hot One: Madonna's on the team... The Take- The Hot One: ??

Poo-poo Madonna --- Geena Davis is the hot one in any room she walks into!
I love the irony that they flipped the idea of girls fighting for the love interest and made the guys have those situations instead! When we think about it, it's funny and a nice twist
Monica is by far most beautiful to me.
I always thought Courtney Cox was gorgeous and was confused by why Monica wasnt the hot one, lol!
Sorry, but gotta ask can you add more bipoc chars in your examples, like more than 1 or 2? a lot of your videos seem majority white-centric. I’m not sure if the topics you chose are just only related to white chars and I’m not asking for the topics of your vids to be about bipoc chars, just in the imagery you use.

Unfortunately, that is just the society we live in. They don't even realize they do it. But instead of looking for validation in channels like this, there are plenty of other channels made by BIPOC that cover the topics. Don't give channels like this views if it goes against your principles.

Considering the topic, we should accept that beauty standards have been eurocentric for a long time and that therefore the trope is mainly white too. Beauty standards have been very anti black and colorist in the America's, sadly.

It’s not their fault Hollywood is white-centric
Why do they make some of the hot one kill people like in gossip girl Serena believes she killed some one and Alison dilaurentis pushed Ian in the bell tower . He could have died .
Rachel always dressed hot... With the stylish hair and the hot girl makeup... Monica dressed in flowy simple t shirts and tops that made her look a little tomboyish...while Phoebe was the weird, hippie boho one with eccentric looks... Sp its obvious, Rachel will be seen as the hot one
i think its the stereotype of the blonde being the "bombshell" and it wasnt phoebe because she was seen as the "simple" more comical character, but i do think monica is stunning
I never got why Jen was considered so much hotter and cooler than everyone else.
I thought Monica was the most beautiful one!
If you think about a show that really broke the trope, It would be Living Single.
Female characters today are far worse than they were before, relationships and connections are the most important factors of our lives so telling ppl they can be fulfilled through shallow sex and work etc in the same way is a lie for most ppl.
In Beverley Hills there were TWO hot girls: Brenda and Kelly. Then, in a rather unexplicable turn, screenwriters started to make Donna as the hot girl. And this had nothing to do with the fact that Tory Spelling was the producer's daughter.
Television doesn’t need a hot one, but it does need hotties because that puts men in buying moods and that’s what everything is about under capitalism.
Just wanted to say....Phoebe with the wavy hair ❤
Not everyone in this coment section still arguing about who the hot one is.😂😂
Thank you for pointing out that whilst Friends has some outdated jokes that simply don't fly anymore and it's a very cis white straight cast... it broke ground with it's female and male characters in other ways. Like challenging female roles of "hot", "house-wife" or "weirdo"... And how supportive and LOVING the male characters are with each other - a stark contrast to the way masculinity is usually portrayed, which causes more harm than good as men bottle their emotions and isolate themselves which leads to a sad reality of the biggest source of mortality of young males being suicide. Friends did a lot of good for the time it was created, and that's why I, a 90s kid, love it as much as I do.
