The Horror of The Heights by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

Ойын-сауық

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was a renowned British writer and physician, best known for creating the famous detective character Sherlock Holmes. He was born on May 22, 1859, in Edinburgh, Scotland, to Charles Altamont Doyle and Mary Foley Doyle. Doyle's early education took place at the Jesuit preparatory school of Hodder Place and Stonyhurst College. Later, he studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh and graduated in 1881.
After completing his medical studies, Conan Doyle worked as a ship's doctor on various voyages, including a whaling expedition to the Arctic. He also served as a surgeon on a British steamship traveling to West Africa. These experiences provided him with a rich source of inspiration for his future writing.
Conan Doyle's career as a writer took off when he began publishing short stories and novels. His most notable creation, Sherlock Holmes, made his first appearance in the novel "A Study in Scarlet" in 1887. The character of Holmes, with his keen powers of observation and deductive reasoning, quickly became immensely popular among readers.
Sherlock Holmes' popularity led Conan Doyle to write numerous stories and novels featuring the detective and his loyal companion, Dr. John Watson. The adventures of Sherlock Holmes, including classics like "The Hound of the Baskervilles" and "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes," made Conan Doyle one of the most widely read and celebrated authors of his time.
Despite his success with the Sherlock Holmes stories, Conan Doyle felt constrained by the detective's popularity and wished to focus on more serious literary work. In an attempt to distance himself from Holmes, he famously killed off the character in the story "The Final Problem." However, due to public outcry and popular demand, Conan Doyle eventually resurrected Holmes in later stories.
Apart from his detective fiction, Conan Doyle also wrote historical novels, science fiction, plays, and non-fiction works on a variety of subjects. He was a prolific writer, producing over fifty books, countless short stories, and numerous articles throughout his career.
In addition to his literary pursuits, Conan Doyle was deeply interested in spiritualism and the supernatural. He became a prominent advocate for spiritualism, even participating in seances and investigating alleged paranormal phenomena. This interest often brought him into conflict with skeptics and critics.
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's contributions to literature and popular culture were widely recognized during his lifetime. In 1902, he was knighted by King Edward VII for his services as a volunteer army doctor during the Boer War. Conan Doyle passed away on July 7, 1930, at the age of 71, leaving behind a rich legacy of detective fiction and captivating storytelling that continues to captivate readers worldwide.

Always loved this story. And Jordan Peele's "Nope," which is also fantastic, feels like a modern successor.

Regarding who might be interested in engines: Career day in 6th grade, I (f, now 64) went to the engine repair workshop because I was planning to take after my uncle and be a mechanic. The instructor kicked me out and told me to go to the home-ec or nursing workshop instead. I think for many women, it's not a lack of interest but a lack of support for their interest. Aside from that, excellent reading and commentary as always. Thanks so much!

How dare they! I remember taking drafting in 9th grade elective & hearing at the parent teacher evening how the boys might go into architectural, civil, or mechanical engineering & that the girls will be able to draw a better picture for a bathroom or kitchen remodel to give to their husbands. My 1st BA was designed as AUDIO/VISUAL ART: Photography, Audio Recording, Video Production (the intranet was only around when I first started college & the www was created in my last year) well before all these “VISUAL COMMUNICATION” degrees & where EVERY SINGLE JOB is a matter of “tap & click” activities. I spend over 25years in the RocknRoll/Corporate/Arts AV Industry until my health issues advanced & I needed health insurance (boo! for the USA!) before Obama helped usher in our semi-helpful Health Care Bill, which lead me to return to college for an AA degree in CADD. I then went on to participate in creating eco-sustainable aircraft engineering designs that helped save our company money, our customers money, & our environmental resources! So, I say to those bay sayers, “Go Turn a SCREW, YOU!” and go on about my merry way. It is true we wombans have a long way to go BUT we have come along way! Thank you for sharing your story, it reminded me of my IGNORANT & SEXIST Drafting Teacher in the 9th grade…& then gave me a smile for my OWN ACHIEVEMENTS anyway!!!

Thank you for the fantastic story. I haven't read any Conan Doyle, only watched various moves and series. Also thank you for the chat. You revived a memory I have of a story my mom told of my very English Great Gran. She wasn't going to put up with that cast just because her leg was broken. She told her son, take it off or I will! Now that is terror...!

I happen to be amongst the jeerers. I do truly love ACD, one of my favorites of all time. But, this story has always been one I just couldn’t get down with. Listened to it all merely for T’s wonderful post op.

Thank God/dess I check your channel regularly to see if I have missed anything! I spend most of my Sundays on here! Arthur C Doyal is fascinating to me because he had similar beliefs to me and just because of a few frauds shouldn’t make the whole belief in something other than that which our physical eyes can see, make us come across as gullible or foolish! And the strange thing is that a lot of people that judged him for his beliefs, believe wholeheartedly in a book that wasn’t even started while any of the people in it were still alive! (The gospel of Thomas and the Dead Sea scrolls were an exception and the church tried its best to suppress them like all that other secret artefact’s hidden in the Vatican according to whistle blowers) Written by men and vandalised by the council of Nicaea! Female names discarded and the wife of Jesus who was most likely the wisest and most gifted spiritually of the disciples, was made into a demon possessed whore by the church! But forgive me, this is not the place to get into that! My point is that if we all would live and let live, life would be a lot easier for all of us! Great job and fab writer so thank you so much for finding this 💎 gem!

This story explains the mystery of missing ✈ airplanes. And the phenomenon of raw meat 🍖 falling from the skies. Heretofore thought to be venison or slaughtered cattle strewn through the atmosphere by tornadoes destroying a slaughterhouse. Think again I say !!!
