    My favorite trivia about this movie is about the woman playing Jane Doe. They didn't have a mannequin/CGI for her (besides when they were cutting her open and breaking her bones obvi). The actress spent the entire movie laying still and staring straight up to give Jane Doe an eerie quality of being alive.

    One of my favorite things about it. Like I think in my mind when I watch a movie and they use a mannequin for a corpse I can just tell, I know it’s not a person, but with this movie deep down you know that that is a person laying there that at any moment could move.

    Exactly. Spending this whole film inside that environment (except for a very few shots, this is a single location movie) made it claustrophobic and that adds to the fear of wanting to GET OUT. So with the son so close to doing that and having it ripped away from him was perhaps a bigger scare than a lot of what came before it even.

    The twist ending makes sense because the son stabbed the father in the heart (ending his suffering faster than was supposed to happen) so Jane Doe's pact with the father (he had to feel and experience every ounce of her suffering) was void and the son, who voided the pact, had to die. It all makes sense looking at it this way.

But, even knowing that it makes sense in story, it doesn't feel like a satisfying ending. Both the father and son are dead, the son's attempt at sparing his father more pain ultimately got him killed, and Jane Doe is stick stuck as an immortal corpse despite all of this. It isn't a matter of the antagonist winning on this one, it's that it just feels like everyone lost.

    I too always interpreted the witch thing as she only became a witch in death, the constant torcher, and pseudo-religious practices created a spirit so powerfully vengeful that they created the very monster they set out to destroy. The idea that they broke and twisted this innocent girl into a misanthropic force of nature is incredibly compelling. As for the ending, the disappointing truth about revenge is... it never actually gives you the satisfaction that you hope it will. The fact that Austin released his father from the misery prematurely would have angered Jane even further.

    I think it’s justified in this film though. Jane Doe has spent hundreds of years trapped and feeling all of that pain. Ryan doesn’t quite grasp what the twist of the ending IS - the father accepts it, to make a trade, but the son takes his father’s life to prevent HIM from suffering (which sure as fuck wasn’t the deal that Jane got) and he does so before the switch is even complete. Not to mention these two guys just spent two hours literally slicing open and dissecting this poor woman who could feel it all, you really think after hundreds of years she’s gonna make a distinction of “oh it’s ok they’re just doing their job”??

The movie is pretty explicitly about the mystery of jane doe's demise and yes the father's own issues with his wife's death though to a lesser degree. That all being said yeah it took the path that lead to a cheap jump scare but that's not the issue that I argued against here and in the video she wasn't painted as just being an evil witch which is the issue being brought up, the deal that was made was not fulfilled so the son died it's that simple. If you wanted a feel good ending, that was cancelled out as soon as the son killed his dad. If you had watched the movie before having it spoiled here you would've noticed it. I really recommend just watching the movie because generally it was indeed in line with the rest of the story as the deaths are implied to have played out there same way with the previous victims. It seems more that people wanted a mystery drama rather than the supernatural horror that the movie actually was.

You could make them not realize that she's alive, but that would be also a fast end but with her dying because of bloodloss and such. You can drag it too, but I think that's one of the first twists that audience's would guess, so it'll be like "(15 mins in) oh she's alive isn't she? I didn't really feel like Jane Doe was wholly evil. I felt it was implied that she was conscious and had to endure the pain of having her body ripped open by these two men, essentially being tortured and scrutinized all over again. It kinda made sense to me that she wouldn't let either of them just go free. She's bitter, scarred, and traumatized and she's been forced to remain trapped in her body for centuries. She wanted to rest in peace, but instead she was dug up and unwittingly tortured. I think that fit the theme perfectly in that it showed how detrimental being bitter and cold towards other people because of past trauma can be.

Then of course they could do the same sequel set up that they did by revealing that jane doe is missing since she obviously regenerated to some extent. Heck, they even could have had both Jane doe and the father missing. Still love the movie mind, but liking something shouldn't preclude it from criticism.

    You voiced my exact issue with "witch" based horror movies! Having been to Salem and taken a historical tour and learning about just how horribly these people were treated, it fills me with horror that so many movies go "actually, the innocent women killed by religious extremism were really the EVIL ones!". It's actually vile. That's also my issue with exorcism movies. In my mind, whenever the person who's being tortured and/or killed based off of extreme religious beliefs turns out to "really be the evil one", it's just furthering the victimization of people who have suffered these things in the real world- people who may have been mentally ill, or even just diverged somehow from societal norms. I'm much more interested in seeing these victims get justice rather than seeing them be turned into monsters for the crime of being abnormal in some way. I thought that perhaps the Autopsy of Jane Doe could have actually highlighted the fact that the woman was an innocent victim but they just had to get that last plot twist in there...

    The fact that most of the victims of the witch trials (not just in Salem, but in Europe too) were widows, elderly, enslaved people, or those who didn't have the financial or social protection of men (either because they were unmarried or because they didn't have surviving fathers) really just makes the demonization of them so much worse. These were (mostly) women who literally had no way of protecting or defending themselves, and even in death, people treat them without dignity or respect. Outside of specific academic circles, most people treat the witch trials as such a joke, instead of the horrific tragedy that it really was.

    I always saw the ending justified. As I remember the movie, the son killed the father before he went through all the pain she went through. The ritual/restoration wasn't fully complete as he didn't die from the pain as I felt like she did, who knows how long she suffered for or the father would for her to be fully restored. Again, one could argue he went through enough and she should let the son go, but as I can imagine back in the day it was all or nothing. Once you seal the deal with anyone, it is done and if you break away they can kind of can do what they want instead. I can also imagine that it was mostly men who did all of this, probably similar age as the son and father (the older teaching the young as per the old tradition). So for me, it was always a justified ending, where the deal they made wasn't honoured.

    When you brought up the New England witch hunts, all I could think about was: 1. That they are highly exaggerated in the way they are talked about today. The Salem Witch Trials were an anomaly in Massachusetts history, as such poor excuses for evidence were not taken seriously before then, nor ever again afterward. 2. That the people accused and killed during the Salem Witch Trials were all, most likely, Christians and did not practice any form of witchcraft at all, not even folk magic and certainly not "Wicca." The way people talk about the Salem Witch Trials, and, for that matter, the witch trials of Medieval Europe, shows that people get the majority of their knowledge and perceptions of history from popular culture.

    I think this is one of my favourite videos of yours because you managed to perfectly put into words one of the biggest issues and reoccuring frustrations I have with many horror films I've watched recently: they start out with a really unique/different/interesting idea and tone/style that sets it apart and makes it stand out from other horror films, where you can tell that the filmmaker had a very clear and thoughtout picture in their head of precicely what they wanted the film the be, look, and feel like - WHAT they wanted to say and HOW they wanted to say it. And it all starts - and ends - the same way .. every single time.... The first half is really good, quickly grabbing you as something *different*, establishing its tone and then slowly but carefully working to build on its story/narrative/themes, and you're really intruiged and genuinely interested... Then, all of the sudden.... The second-half of the film slowly and then very suddenly devolve into the same old generic creepy horror film we've seen a thousand times before, where all the thouthfulness and subtedly and cleverness goes out the window to make room for tripe creepy figures and cheap scares... And that drop at the end where the clichéd horror-tropes suddenly comes out often feels like it's due to the filmmaker's own fear of failure rather than their incapability to actually complete the film as is, without resorting to creepy clichés. Ugh. When you know how good a film *COULD* have been, but wasn't ---- not because they couldn't actually do it, but because the filmmakers simply lost faith in their own films' ability to stand on its own and because they (incorrectly) lacked faith in the audiences' ability (and willingness!) to be open to experiencing something new or different ... It's the most frustrating thing I know when it comes to horror films: Missed potential.

    my main beef is that this movie plays enough like a mystery that in combination with the stock "salem witch" character endpoint it feels like you're supposed to have a shot at figuring it out for yourself- but figuring it out is made impossible because instead of doing about 30 seconds' worth of research, jane doe is stated to have compression to the waist indicating she spent a lot of time wearing a corset. the style of corset that would do that was popular with the Victorians. not only would the idea of tightlacing go pretty well against the whole puritan ethos of modesty and chastity and all, you /can't/ do that in a corset without metal grommets, which couldn't be produced until the Industrial Revolution. Watching for the first time, when they bring up that the dirt in her nails or whatever might be from New England, I considered that they were going in a Salem direction and decided that was impossible, because of the corset stuff!

    Ehhh. There was a New England Vampire Panic in the 19th century. So I could see a panic plausibly happening during that time. However, I do agree with you since the vibe of the movie is that she was tortured and killed by Europeans (that is the vibe I got, anyway) and likely pre-19th century. So, yeah, I get what you mean. Sigh, I didn't even think of that.

    The ending of this movie is kind of emblematic of my issues with modern horror. Horror movies nowadays are more focused on provoking you/getting a cheap emotional response, rather than actually being unsettling and creepy. IMO, this movie would have been way better if there were no supernatural elements at all, and it was just the main characters freaking themselves out over nothing.

    Love your point about Salem. As an Historian focused on colonial social history, my biggest gripe with pop culture depictions of Salem isn't necessarily the need to insert actual witchcraft into the narrative (though yes it is more often than not in very poor taste) but rather in how reductive these works make the whole event. The Salem witch trials weren't a random instance of mass hysteria/paranoia but merely one extreme example of a commonplace practice. Accusations of witchcraft were not about certain individuals being labeled 'outcasts' by a backwards community, they were about specific groups being ostracized as a way of social control. One of the scariest parts about the actual Salem trials was in how self perpetuating this control became to the point that normally 'safe' (influential/accepted community voices) groups could find themselves targeted just for questioning the proceedings. By just making it all actually about witches, these works disregard very real issues that still persist in society today. For the record, The VVitch is an INCREADIBLY accurate depiction of colonial views/beliefs on witchcraft and a great deal of its success in this regard is how Robert Eggers uses it to examine the very real issues I just alluded to. It doesn't just 'get ' witches, it 'gets' why their were 'witches'

    My biggest problem with this movie is that nothing was answered. when I mentioned that to my family, they berated me that not all movies should spoon-feed you the answers to everything and that some things are better left as a mystery. But here's the thing. I really don't feel like there are any answers in this movie. I never got the feeling that I missed something or that I would be able to figure out more if I watched it a few times. I really feel like the movie itself is a dead end, which really sucks since there is a lot in the movie to be invested in.

I loved the first half with the actual autopsy; having the father and son slowly discover the anomalies with Jane's external and internal condition was unnerving and extremely effective. But then that second half kicked in and yeah the scares weren't effective and pretty predictable.

    I actually liked the ending. It brought everything to a close. You end up not really hating Jane Doe. But understanding her. Then you get the whole father sacrifices himself for his son story, which is cool. And it brings it to a close with Emile dying, because who wants to go on living having murdered their gf, witnessing all that supernatural crap, father, gf and cat dead, and not wanting to continue the family business. He had nothing left, except 2 life sentences for double murder. Solid ending.

  • @AnomalyINC

    @AnomalyINC

    I'd argue that you can understand her, while still hating her. It depends a bit on information that is never clearly revealed. I see three possibilities: 1. She was innocent, and she became what she is as a result of the injustice carried out on her, making her more of a revenant than a witch. I see this as the least likely one, while being the most sympathetic. Not justifiable, as she takes it out on innocents, but blind rage is, if nothing else, relatable. 2. She was used as a vessel to bind an evil spirit, as suggested by the symbols on the inside of her skin. It could be suggested that the presence of this spiritual entity is what tore her insides to shreds as it couldn't pass the warded skin. In this scenario, she is not a "she" at all, but an "it" trapped in the dead body of a woman, trying to free itself. I see this as more likely than the first theory, but there are some plot elements that speak against this. 3. The most likely scenario, as I see it, offers very little in the way of sympathy. While her death must have been gruesome, she was indeed proven to be a witch with no qualms about hurting the innocent, and that the grotesque ritualistic murder of the woman was the only way to stop her. If this is how the character is intended, then I do have a problem with it, as "lol evil" is rarely a solid motivation for a serious horror story. Even then, I did enjoy this movie, as everything around Jane Doe is very well-crafted.

  • @certifiedredditgenius

    @certifiedredditgenius

    Exactly. At the end of the day, it might not have followed every English Narrative rule about the plot but it scared and entertained the audience which is what it set out to do. The scene where the father realizes that she's alive and suddenly has sympathy for what is all intents and purposes a dead body is great. The ending where the detective finds the "corpse" healed, the bodies still away is great. It means that they essentially went through an illusion that ended in 3 deaths and took place in one of the most terrifying settings imaginable. The subtle terror of the main antagonist not moving despite everything is honestly very enjoyable. So while the true horror fans might find this one a bit bland, me and my friends being casual horror fans very much enjoyed it, ending and all. I didn't find the ending cheap, to me it seemed the obvious way for the film to end.

    In case those of you are interested in the film, I want to say upfront that there's a cat in that lives with the father and son, and it gets injured from the demon (?) and the father has to break its neck to end its suffering. I wasn't expecting it and it did take me out of the film for a bit, so in case you guys avoid animal deaths in film or just need a warning beforehand (I find that finding out beforehand helps, so yeah) EDIT: I know Ryan mentions the cat in the video, but I still wanted to have this in the comments just in case xD This was a really good film, and honestly it was because of this film that I had some high hopes for Scary Stories (since they're both done by the same director); he's really good with atmosphere and storytelling, but with Scary Stories, I felt like while the atmosphere was there in places, it wasn't throughout (and speaking of, I definitely liked Ryan's analysis of Scary Stories).

I think The Shape of Water and Stranger Things were one of the worst because there were super graphic about showing the dead cat and the characters didn't really react like their beloved pet had been killed. This was exactly how I felt after the ending. They've been setting it up the whole movie long; she was brutally tortured and murdered as a witch and now seeks revenge. And after the father sacrificed himself and Jane got revenge, the whole plot was completed. I just don't understand why they decided to make her a stereotype by 'she is just evil'. And after the father's sacrifice she also had to kill the son, and in the ambulance we she see she looks for her next victim.... like come on, give closure. We don't need the 'she is still out there' for it to be scary. It was a great film until they betrayed what they promised
