have you tried giving As Above So Below a shot? its a highly underrated found footage style film. it has a deep plot which you will better understand if you know the basics of Dante's Divine Comedy and have some info on Paris Catacombs. its a very smartly made movie with just the perfect balance of scares and symbolism. i suggest you give it a try!

That moment when Cheryl is interviewed and she absentmindedly scratches her head and we see that she has no hands left really got me on a visceral level. It was so, so much worse than if the lack of her hands had been the focus of the scene. She’s sitting there crying about not knowing what to do without her torturer, even as she scratches her head with the stump where her hand should be. He has broken her on every level, and the enormity of it pierced through me to the bone.

Yeah, that scene was messed up, especially if you just wanna go along with the movie and pretend you're watching a real victim in real documentary. Worst thing is, I can easily see something like this actually happening. I mean, Stockholm Syndrome is a thing and so is brainwashing, just look at the Mansion Family cult, dude had so much power over his followers, it's insane.

That scene and that one where the woman enters the police car, and he reveals to be a killer. And then she says that he can do whatever he wants, but to release her alive afterwards, in which he replies "No. You don't want to stay alive after what I'm going to do with you". I watched this movie by accidente. Without knowing what it was all about. At the end I felt like something was robbed from me. Not necessarily time.. But ever since then, I always recommend others to NOT watch this movie. Not because it is good or bad, but simply because it is a movie that it was made for you to feel bad at the end. There is no saving grace or anything. Of course, if someone likes this type of movie, by all means.. go watch it. Is just that I wouldn't like people that I like to feel the same thing.

Makes me think of an episode of “I shouldn’t Be Alive” (I think or it was the “I Survived” spin-off) The girl was telling a story of how she was kidnapped and brutally assaulted for days and days on end. Her captor kept her in his van as he drove across the western US. At one part when she was telling about being released by him, the camera cut to her actually talking and not playing the dramatic reenactment and she was crying, she went to wipe her tears and she had no arms. She wiped her tears with a cloth on her prosthetic arm. It sent shivers down my spine, and not 20-30 later into her talking she said he cut her arms off and let her go. It just stuck with me and that was probably 10 years ago or more

That's the thing, we already know this stuff exists and why. Were numb to it all, we know there are just evil people out there and it has become more depressing than anything. However, things like ghosts and goblins are the unknown, there's a fear in that. Fear of the devil, fear of the afterlife, fear of something bigger than humanity could never explain. That's a fear on a philosophical nature.

I feel they confused us with fairytales meant to scare us about wild animals. Sure, in certain parts animals and old ladies are a problem but it just feels now it was a poor attempt to shield who the real monsters are. People.I know when people started to act bad I was confused. Only monsters do really bad things? Why are people acting like these monsters? The contradiction created doubts and confusion. Who do you turn to when your family acts like monsters? Those fairytales were no help at all and failed us in the end.

  • @pennyc11

    @pennyc11

I am still waiting for the ghosts. I am sure someone who died has a problem or an issue with me ? These monsters are metaphors or warnings of what could be ..but isn't. I get bugged when people swear it's real. Get all emotional about it and scare kids. Yeah, well these angels, Jesus, Allah, have all turned out to be real perverts. Like Santa Claus they see you when you are sleeping, awake, in the shower, the bedroom, and do nothing to prevent bad things from happening. So I have to believe these helpers don't have to help. Just make me feel paranoid, maybe become delusional messing with my head? Well, I hope they are helping someone. I learned I need to depend on live human beings, to be helpful and give credit to those who actually have helped me thru life. These are who I really can count on. ...ghosts...how many poor souls have gone nuts because someone made them crazy by making up stuff like that ? A lot.

The reason why i love this movie despite its flaws is just how we never get any answers because there simply aren't any. I think the whole "empty motivation" thing actually very much works in the movie's favor; there is no explanation, there's no motive. The Butcher is a perverse man who rejoices in the power he has over people, plain and simple. So much so that he taunts the police the whole time just to show that they can't get him, no matter how hard they try. Every time they seemed to have a lead, it was the Butcher who gave it to them, even when they found his house and tapes. He played absolutely everyone like a puppet, not just poor Cheryl.

The scene in this movie that terrified me most was the cop car pickup. Mainly because it really accentuates Ed’s power desire. The woman apologizes to Ed, trying to gain pity from him despite her really not doing anything wrong. Ed tells her she shouldn’t get into strangers cars but she didn’t. She was under the pretense that he was a cop, people who keep others like her safe from people like Ed. Ed uses that to break her down and question her own decision when she hadn’t even done anything wrong.

This movie kind of grew on me. On the one hand it tries a bit too hard on the "serial killer is too smart for us" but the actual found footage stuff was really well done and I kind of wish it didn't hype the killer too much with the interviews.

From my watch of this movie, I assumed that the reason why Cheryl kept looking to the documentarian and saying “I don’t know what to say.” was because he was the killer. In doing this documentary he is continuing his video log and of course inserting himself into the case in a whole new dynamic. I could be wrong, but it adds a whole new creepy dimension to the whole piece of art.

I love that idea. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work. For one thing, the interviewer spoke to the mother of Cheryl many times. In the tapes, we see that Cheryl’s mom has a brief face to face with the killer and horribly realizes who he is before he runs off. I’m sure she would have noticed if the interviewer was him. The reason Cheryl behaves that way is due to the trauma she faced while in the killer’s captivity. People who are broken the way she was tend to become extremely submissive when out of the captor’s grasp. Her asking the interviewer what he wants her to say is akin to never being a free person while in captivity. Everything she did during that time was controlled by the killer. That is why he spent the first few days (or weeks) forcing her into painful postures and causing psychological torment. He needed to make her into his own puppet/ slave. This is because he is a sick, deranged individual with no form of conscience.

I liked The Poughepsie tapes because it stays somewhat grounded and more or less shows how a serial killer might operate so it's valid in my eyes. On the other hand, I hated the acclaimed french "martyrs" which I watched in theatre {in original version, I'm french). It made no sense to me but I somewhat liked the first half, it had something interesting going on, But then it abandons it to descend into torture porn where a woman is beaten the shit out of her for what felt an eternity only to be skinned alive for outlandish reasons with a no-payoff which resonates to me like a giant lazy fuck you. There I ask, what for? I went out disgusted, not by the violence itself, it's a movie and I can take it if it has something to say, but because it was pointless and gratuitous. Why so many people think that it's a good film is beyond me. A Serbian film is another one that has questionable motives but at least it doesn't present itself to be anything else than a ridiculous edgy dark comedy.

Thats when I got a chill and wondered, what if Ed is the one making this documentary? All the investigators said how easy it would he for him to switch identities/personas to get what he wants. They said he would get off on reliving the experience and relish how he fooled everyone. What if the reason why the final girl (I forgot her name) was acting weirdly was bc she had a feeling it was Ed and thats why she asked him what to say? What if Ed edited the video to cut out the parts where he tells her to keep quiet about it and to pretend it wasn’t him? She would definitely do it for him.

I can't remember the exact line of dialogue, but one of the interviewees says something about how Ed did something to most likely impress people, and then the interviewer asks "were you impressed?" That line in and of itself is darkly humorous. So yeah, Ed was the interviewer. The dark humor seems to go over everyone's heads. The movie isn't a "found footage" horror film. It's a mockumentary horror film, but there are found footage aspects in the snuff films. It's kind of a weird juxtaposition.

I've lived right across the Hudson River from Poughkeepsie my whole life. This movie absolutely chilled me to the bone. After I watched it I researched the actual case of the Poughkeepsie Killer and it is LARGELY exaggerated. Kendall Francios, the actual Poughkeepsie Killer was an absolutely despicable human being, and he did make snuff films of his kills, but he was much less of a cerebral stalker and he was more of a monster who killed alleged prostitutes. He only is credited with eight slayings, the youngest of his victims being 25 years old. Not sure if this info means anything to anybody in the comments, or if it will even be seen, but I just wanted to clear the air a bit to bring some perspective on the actual beast who really took the lives of eight women who were (allegedly) just trying to make a living. If one were to make a case for legalizing prostitution in this country, the Poughkeepsie Killer is not a bad place to start.

This is horrifying to me my parents having grown up there, and growing up in the next town myself. In Poughkeepsie the son of family friends was tortured, cannibalized and then murdered when I was a teenager; my brother’s second grade teacher went missing years ago - she was found about 4 years ago after her husband died - he had hidden her body in the walls. I won’t bore you with connections or unfathomable details of Kendall Francois - Poughkeepsie’s own serial killer in the nineties. Forgive me if this was mentioned; fun fact - Ed Wood is from Poughkeepsie, went to High School, with my Dad I believe.

Roy Hazelwood, the granddaddy of FBI profilers, wrote a book about SK's. His conclusion is very simple: self-gratification thru power. Period. The SK gratifies himself thru the exercise of total power over another human life..Usually the sex drive becomes mixed up with that desire for power and violence, driving them to continue...what this film got wrong, apparently, is the idea of changing MO's. The SK is consistent with what gets him off and follows a pattern. And yes, they do enjoy the power of being talked about in the media and feared....I could go on, it's an expertly done book by THE expert...but here's a thought: they do not show people running on the field at baseball games to discourage it and deny them the fun of seeing themselves on TV...but SK's are covered and depicted literally ad naseum...maybe just make the public aware while they're at large, spread any description and leave it at that, hmmm? Imagine the Zodiac reliving the glory days, taking some Viagara and watching his old murders in a real movie, over and over-another aspect of SK's is many are less prolific specifically because they just relive earlier murders and masturbate to them, until they need new material. One SK masturbated during his confession. A guy from South Africa whose MO was strangulation ==== The point of me writing this and maybe the film is that there's nothing to understand...As Alex de Large said, 'I do what I do, because I like to do'. The idea of backgrounds and specific events causing these crimes is just Hollywood bullshit, and SK's are really not interesting people...they just have a hobby we find interesting. They tend to be boring and not evil geniuses, but from slightly above average intelligence to morons. The once most prolific known US serial killer had the IQ of a gnat, The Green River Killer

I think a lot of people have dismissed SKs as just damaged children who grew up to be damaged and violent adults. And there is some correlation there no doubt. But I think it's more than that. I think murder can be a carnal vice the same way that too much drinking, or gambling, or sex can be. You could be a regular guy in every other way, but just really enjoy torture/murder in some visceral way. The question is, if you're a man with such a predilection, what's stopping you from acting on it?

The fact that a lot of times police do a poor job on catching them/letting them go,twist the narrative that they were “ never found “ because I’m reality they didn’t do their job properly.

Also, after Cheryl was found, hospital staff attending to her eventually found out she had started self-harming after she’d been “rescued.” In addition I kinda found him taunting her to be an odd choice for him bc, while it was something he’d do, the fact that he did in broad daylight without a disguise makes the fact that no one could identify him all the more inexplicable. Also I liked how in the final interview Cheryl looked like a skeleton- it made it all the more fucked up

The movie makes a few mistakes that really take you out of the realism. Some of the talking head interviews aren’t convincing; the movie claims that it’s honoring the main victim but realistically they wouldn’t show all of that terrible footage of her if it were real. This movie needed a large dose of “Lake Mungo” level of commitment combined with its storyline and found footage and it could have been absolutely legendary.

Honestly this movie was fairly accurate. If you look at websites like bestgore, liveleak, ync and many others people are fascinated by this type of crap. Then you have the disgusting, revolting and sinister real life pedophile sex trafficking rings being busted left and right nowadays. They're tracking down sick fucks in the U.S., Australia, Asia, Africa, Europe, South America christ even in Antarctica they're arresting and bringing sick pedophiles like Richard Huckle, Peter Scully, Shannon McCoole, Jeffrey Epstein and just recently they busted a pedophile ring in Germany this year. They found over 600 terabytes of child pornography traced back to everyone all over the world. I'm in a group who attempts to track these sick pieces of shit down so they can rot in prison.

Yeah one of the difficulties with found footage is framing the meta premise. In theaters or as a produced project, there's that extra step found footage horror often stumbles on, of: "how did this get here, in this space, exactly?" Sometimes this is dealt with in a superficial manner because they know it's meant for a teen audience, like Paranormal Activity's "here's this footage we found don't think about it too hard". But if any effort is involved, then you can sometimes wind up with more questions than you have answers. At it's worst, this results in Romero's Diary of the Dead. At its best you get Lake Mungo (aaand possibly not much else?) Personally, I like Behind the Mask's solution for dealing with wanting scenes that make no sense for a documentary-framed found footage film to have: just reframe certain scenes to be in-universe narrative horror. It sounds like it would be jarring to jump from "this is real, 2nd person POV" to classic "3rd Person Limited" but it actually isn't. As long as the switch is motivated, the audience will accept it. I think this film would have benefited from that looser philosophy.

Definitely an intriguing film. It's arguably a "classic" in the Found Footage category, and while not as popular as the biggest ones (Blaire Witch as the biggest example), it's still a potent piece of cinema that's worth watching at least once, even if it's not necessarily the best of the bunch. I think it's an important watch because it can cause such a strong reaction in even some of the more hardcore members of its audience, which speaks to its accuracy when depicting the reality of serial killers and "evil incarnate" so to speak. Pretty crazy film. Not the best piece of horror but damn does it make you uncomfortable.

I went from being scared of fictional things like Chucky to now being scared of the real world and not feeling safe in my own home anymore. The scene of the girl in the hallway running for her life was especially terrifying for me as I liked to get up for a midnight snack many nights and that all ended after watching that.. Spent many years thinking it was just something I dreamt up as I never saw a full release for it but rediscovered a few years ago and my sleep is all the worse for it.
