The Horrifying Stranding Of The Newfoundland Crew

Ойын-сауық

Imagine you were standing on a treacherous sheet of ice, floating in the North Atlantic Ocean. And your ship and only salvation was impossible to see in the snow storm that surrounded you. And every minute that went by was one minute closer to the frozen night. During which, some of the men with you wouldn’t wake up in the morning. This is the horrifying story of the 1914 Sealing Disaster.

Born/raised in Newfoundland, and the story of this tragedy was part of our schooling as Cassie Brown’s book “Death on the Ice” was one book we studied. That was a good retelling. My 100yo grandmother is from a small community near where the Kean family lived in Bonivista Bay. Another good story for you to check out would be “A Winter’s Tale, the wreck of the Florizel” also by Cassie Brown..tells of the fate of SS Florizel that was mentioned at the end of the story you just presented. “Standing Into Danger” by C Brown would be another for you to check out.

@@Pewnhound112 For me, it was Andrée's arctic balloon expedition. He used a rapidly deflating balloon that he had to refill in secret several times, and expected it to keep him flying over the Arctic for 30 days straight. Didn't listen to all the criticism handed to him by international balloon experts or even his fellow crewmate, and neglected to at the very least adequately prepare for a worst-case scenario. How could things have ended in any other way? He could barely keep the thing flying right after it lifted off. It was heavily reminiscent of the sinking of the Vasa ship.

Those notes that play in the beginning prior to the intro? Perfect. I didn't even realize it was creating brand recognition or whatever in me until I noted the joy I felt hearing them because it meant another Scary Interesting video had arrived. The sound effects within each video are subtle yet perfectly placed. I can't help but wonder if the channel owner used to work in some form of music production or marketing or some other field that heavily utilizes sound. And yeah, I know my comment isn't about the video itself but I wonder this every time I watch one of these so I figured it can't hurt to ask. Maybe someone out there can sate my curiosity. I'd love to start a channel but sound and how to effectively use it has always been the thing that has stopped me.

I started watching your channel recently and I just finished watching you video about the Hokkoda Mountain disaster and it made me of the sealing disaster. In another video you said you were Canadian so I wondered if you had covered this and if not I was going to forward you the email about it I sent fascinating horror. I searched your channel for the word seal and you are already ahead of me.

This gives me a lot of respect for how civil a lot of this process was. Maybe an odd detail to point out but I just really like how, when being rescued there were no questions about it, they brought stretchers and coffee, and even then the bodies were respectfully loaded onto the ships with no arguments. I just really like that, a bit morbid indeed that they just had to be 'stacked' on the front deck but my point stands.. Despite how tragic this was I always admire a tale where humanity seems to be at the forefront.

This part of history, men who died while pursing their livelihood is both horrifying and fascinating. Further south is Gloucester Massachusetts where it is estimated 10,000 people lost their lives at sea basically doing the same thing but while fishing. The names are inscribed on a plaque memorializing those who perished.

They kill each other so that they can survive and hunt down the most vulnerable prey including babies and the elderly fish. You obviously have never had to worry over troubling times or days without food. How are humans the only species morally excluded from hunting other animals? Believing that killing animals is wrong is an ok opinion to have, but wishing death on someone for hunting for food is extreme and just plain wrong.

It's incredibly sad, however it seems insane that they were killing such huge quantities of seals. 35,000 seal pelts on one ship? The sheer amount of wildlife there must have been and the biodiversity supporting the apex predators, all now destroyed 😢

Not at all true. Seals breed out of control if the population is not controlled. They destroy all the other fisheries also. It is a necessary hunt. The fact that any wildlife survived those early explorers is astonishing. In Icebound (about William Barrents) they talk about this. The first thing those crews did on encountering polar bears for the first time is attempt to kill and skin as many as possible. I was in Svalbard recently and they didn't seem to have a positive opinion of all the historical whale and seal hunting there.

Terrifying story. I personally suffer with, what I call, 'white finger' in cold weather. Where, for sometimes up to an hour at a time, my fingers (toes too sometimes) will go completely white and dead and have no blood flow into them until I eventually rub the circulation back into them. I've had a variation of this since childhood, and it is definitely getting more frequent the older I get. Bottom line is I probably wouldn't last five minutes in conditions like these before frost bite got me, nevermind two days like some of these guys did! Incredible human endurance.
