The Honest Car Review | 2019 Mazda 3 - proof the family hatchback might have had its day...

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The Mazda 3 is a fine example of a family hatchback: lovely cabin, high quality, great to drive. So how come it's so difficult to wholeheartedly recommend?

    This is one of the best small family cars you can currently buy. And that big and simple 2l engine is going to be infinitely more durable and reliable than any of these crappy little turbo engines. And it will actually achieve the rated mpg, which most turbo engines cannot. So hell yeah, go buy it

    Not only the turbo but dual clutch autos of European cars are another point of failure, glad this uses a traditional torque converter that’s proven in reliability. Most Japanese cars prize reliability as number 1 so they avoid turbos and unreliable transmissions.

    On a more serious note, the Skyactive X engine might be a best buy in this class. Its only 3000 euros more than the basic engine and i think thats decent. Local dealers told me that by October this year, that engine will be available for a test drive. Cant wait to drive it, as the current enginge does not meet my expectations.

    I think this thing looks really good and is lacking the mountains of extraneous tat and fake grills that seems to pass for design with car manufacturers these days (like the entire VW / Audi lineup, including the latest TT update, sadly). Mazda are also the 2nd most reliable manufacturer at the moment too so that's not bad. It's not fast but handles well and doesn't look like a cookie cutter euro-box. It's also really well built - a breath of fresh air in this segment, I reckon.

    I'm currently looking at this to replace my 2018 (New Gen) 1.0 Polo. I think i'm gonna take your recommendation to do a test drive before buying. I have a soft spot for how linear N/A engines are and also how relatively flexible, all be it a little slow at lower revs. This will also likely be a car for the next 5-6 years or more for me so the reliability of the N/A is quite important. Hopefully the Skyactive X engine is acceptable power wise and doesn't have any serious issues being such new tech.

    I just ordered one switching from a 2018 Kia Sportage, which I loved but didn't need such a big car being the only one in it the majority of the time. The boot is a bit basic but I think I used the under floor storage twice in three years on my last car. Looked at the Skoda Scala and SEAT Leon too, the Skoda isn't bad but the Leon has nothing on the Mazda. The amount of kit you get as standard especially from the SE Lux up is way ahead of the competition.

    Mazda will be bringing an SUV version (CX-30, bigger boot) to the UK in the autumn, as well as introducing the prettier fastback Mazda3 (I like the hatch looks, but not the smallish boot) with its big boot, and the Skyactiv -X engine mentioned in the video. A shame that the UK doesn't get the full engine and spec lineup like our cousins from North America and Down Under.

    Great and funny review, only I disagree that it does ALL the family hatchback stuff 'pretty well'. So, this car is for a family...the boot is nowhere near as good as others, children won't be happy with such small windows, and mediocre headroom. I am sure more famlies will be more interested in that, than in driving dynamics, and therefore buy a crossover or a more practical hatchback as you mentioned... It is a great car and I really like it... I am baffled as to which family man/woman would buy one..

    I had 2007 1.6 and handled really well with great hydraulic steering feel especially at lower speeds. The 2.0 had electric steering that was much worse. 1.6 engine nothing special and gear shift/clutch heavy but accurate. But I did get out after some ordinary drives smiling and almost thanking the car for giving me a good time! Felt like you were involved in the drive. Replacement Leon much better car especially on long trips and so much more effortless to drive and more stable at speed but no longer communicates like the Mazda did. Below 30 the Mazda was more fun. Very agile.

    It's odd - it uses the same 2ltr engine as the previous gen model but gets to 60mph 1.5sec slower in manual form, but the gap for the TC auto version is only a third as much as before. It sounds like they detuned it to meet the latest emissions standards. My 13yo gen-1 car, also a 1.6 petrol is only 0.8sec slower to 60mph than the latest gen 2ltr model!

With this body, they should focus on a more aggressive approach, driver-orientated car, more punch, ignore rear visibility (well... it's already shitty), just an option to carry passengers but more pleasure from driving.

    Why would you choose a Seat Leon - or any Seat for that matter - over it's VW-group siblings? Sure it looks kinda sporty, but it uses outdated infortainment compared to VW and Skoda, and tier-for-tier, it's more expensive than Skoda, which is much more spacious, and in my oppinion way more elegant. Alternatively a Renault Megane is way cheaper. Or Hyundai i30/Kia Ceed are both cheaper, have better reliability, and more standard safety kit.

  • @paultasker7788

    @paultasker7788

    More fun to drive, handles better and ride not much worse, more stylish. More compact (you might want that) Infotainment facelifted in 2016 so I think same generation infotainment now. Like high up screen (lower in Octavia). Works well although annoying seat doesn't activate software link that allows carplay or android auto without paying a fee. Wouldn't buy new because these things depreciate quite fast. 2nd hand much cheaper and good value. Good long distance, rock solid in side winds or bad conditions. Less practical but then I have the ST estate version which adds boot capacity. Still less than Skoda but the estates styling is more youthful and less bland. And Skoda costs more 2nd hand. I've owned 5 Leon's and apart from boot latch (which failed on 2 mark 2s) and a sticking turbo actuator valve have been reliable. Ibiza is like a polo but cheaper. Drives nice. Although hard plastics used well assembled. Mii is very basic but quite nice for city car. Personally though I'd buy seat's 2nd hand at about 1 to 2 years old. New perhaps a touch too pricey although you do get good monthly deals and discounts. Target price for Leon is 4k under list.

  • @RatimirRS

    @RatimirRS

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@paultasker7788 There's a lot to unwrap there! However, almost everything you're mentioning is not unique to Seat, and there's a general consensus that Skoda drives at least as good, and VW is in its own league! The only thing is its sporty/youthfool look, which I already addressed. The infotainment in Leon has been updated with the latest facelift, and is now the same as in pre-facelift Golf/Octavia, an thus outdated. And it's way overpriced. But if you care so much about the way it looks, that you'd take it over all those rivals that I mentioned - and you kinda overlooked or ignored - than that's a valid reason. But for me it's not nearly enough!
