Mazda3 is it the best family hatch in 2019?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

You need real talent to succeed in the family hatchback sector these days, particularly if you want to make up ground on cars as good as Ford's Focus and Volkswagen's Golf. Does the fourth generation Mazda3 have exactly that? The signs are good: eye-catching looks, cutting-edge engines and one of the best cabins in the segment number amongst the highlights.
Background
The development engineer who led up the project to create this car, Kota Beppu, says the MK4 version of this Mazda3 will appeal to 'free spirits'. The sort of person perhaps who might want something stylish and interesting in this class but doesn't want quality or engineering compromises.
Think of a car of this type as good to drive as a Ford Focus, as good inside as a Volkswagen Golf and as good to look at as an Alfa Romeo Giulietta. That's what Mazda was aiming at. So many other brands have started out in this sector with similar objectives but we can't help wondering whether this Mazda hasn't nailed them here.
Driving Experience
Mazda is offering a choice of three engines. Most sales will be based around either a 122PS 2.0-litre Skyactiv-G petrol unit (now a mild hybrid) or a conventional 1.8-litre 116ps Skyactiv-D diesel. The third option is the brand's more advanced Skyactiv-X Spark Controlled Compression Ignition engine, a 182PS supercharged unit which runs on petrol but uses a combination of spark ignition and compression ignition to deliver, Mazda claims, the driver appeal of a petrol unit along with the fuel efficiency and torque of a diesel. This Skyactiv-X powerplant is able to switch from compression ignition, which best suits day-to-day driving, to a form of spark ignition, generally when the engine is started from cold or the driver demands maximum power at high revs. The 'X' engine comes paired with four wheel drive for our market, but as you might expect, the cost of all this technology makes it a pricey choice.
Most UK customers will choose the 2.0-litre Skyactiv-G variant, though the diesel is also worth a look. That Skyactiv-D black pump derivative makes 62mph from rest in 10.3s en route to 121mph. Mazda has put a great deal of effort in developing the sharp driving dynamics that characterised the previous generation model, though a relatively porky kerb weight - 1,350kgs even in the 1.8-litre petrol version, doesn't help here, nor does it really fit with the whole 'Skyactiv' 'less-is-more' ethos.
Design and Build
The Japanese have finally realised that a car of this kind really has to visually stand out - or Mazda has anyway. And sure enough, the hatch and saloon versions of this fourth generation Mazda3 will certainly make an impression in a car park full of Focuses, Astras and Golfs. The company's ridiculously-named 'Kodo' design language has been evolved into something really elegant here, with a low nose, elegant panel shaping and a sloping roof line that flows neatly into the rear screen. It's quite different from the angular styling of a comparable Ford or Volkswagen and could be almost said to have a 'premium' feel.
The interior is even better. There are smart materials crafted with interesting design and button clutter has been well and truly banished. Does any car in the class have a better cabin that this? That's a bold statement but the Mazda designers have set an impressive standard here. It certainly makes the cabin of a Ford Focus feel pretty low-rent. One of the brand's problems in recent years has been the provision of rather small centre-dash screens but in this case, there's a big, clear 8.8-inch display on top of the dash nicely angled towards the driver. And there's a lower rotary controller for it so you don't have to stab away at inexact touchscreen functionality in the kind of way that's necessary with many rival set-ups. We're not quite so impressed by the level of interior space. There are much bigger rear seats in this class and the boot is smaller than before, offering just 351-litres of space in the hatch (or 450-litres in the Saloon) - not much for a car in this class.

i bought mine last weeks. solely on looks and interior quality. does anyone really care about the engine too much. i mean its a small car. you drive it to work and back. no ones going drag racing in it. you press the pedal it goes forward. its a 2021 mazda, sure it might not be the most powerful, but you know the engines good enough. if i want a fast car id buy a wrx or something

Why not the sedan though, greater visibility, bigger boot and more rear legroom, and it’s arguably the better proportioned model this generation.

@@User-cb4jm rear legroom is just the same, boot for hatch will be very larger because you can fold the rear seats plus you want hatch if you are young at heart and want sportier look and spirited driving

I am really glad to watch an informed video review that understand the new Mazda3. All the North American reviews are just screaming non-stop for a MPS/MazdaSpeed 3 like whiny entitled babies, even thought the US and Canadian Market already get an 2.5L 186HP petrol engine. And then many UK based reviews are dissing Mazda and kissing up the Ford Focus and VW Golf. For me the design is just ace. I honestly don't think Mazda designed this to be a family hatch, but rather a practical coupe. The exterior of the 5-dr is almost like a GT coupe/shootingbrake with its long bonnet and short boot. And no fake vents! The interior design is very driving-focused with few gadget distractions. As for the "Ford Focus like handling", the engineering credit should go to the Mazda MX-5. It's almost like an Alfa Romeo but with Japanese quality control and reliability. Personally I can't wait to see when the Skyactiv-X engine gets official data on it's outout and fuel consumption figures.

As a bit of a car geek is rare that you actually learn things from these videos but some of the features have been perfectly explained. Looking forward to buying the top spec in Grey with the X engine soon once this current mess is sorted! It pains me to ask but had anyone got the X engine with the Auto? My girlfriend only drives Auto so may have to miss out on the slick manual.. 😒 but driving in London may come to appreciate it!? Or I have to teach her to drive 'stick'! 🥺

You make some of the very highest quality reviews online. The professional approach and wide angle of covered areas about a car and its ownership are very valuable. Also the presenter here is highly talented, a model example of automotive journalism. My only criticism is that I would like to see more of a focus on the driving experience. When a review runs for 51 minutes, surely the most important part of motoring should receive a bit more time spent on.

Looks an amazing car and this review provides a huge amount of information but the one thing they don't mention surprisingly is Mazda's great reliability. I would of thought a mention of data from the reliability index and perhaps owner satisfaction sources to give an expected reliability level. When you add that in the Mazda 3 seems possibly with the Honda Civic the best options in it's class by a long way for those who just want to buy the car and enjoy it and not spend huge money after the warranty period. For those who sell within the warranty period fair enough but some might keep the car 5 years and long term reliability is then much more important. Also the Mazda engine technology seems to be designed around reliability, superchargers tend to be much more reliable than turbo's which again adds to the cars long term reliability and dependability and lower running costs. I also feel the internal cabin of the Mazda 3 seems to be designed around resembling a sports car cabin. The great handling and thick rear pillars with less than ideal rear visibility mimic many sports cars. With its amazing styling, great handling, superb cabin and strong reliability and decent pricing it just seems like a fantastic car option especially with the terrific paintwork options. No I am not a Mazda dealer but just seems a fantastic car. With their great reliability reputation surprised they don't offer a 5 year warranty, it doesn't look like it would cost them much to match Toyota.

A Dutch car magazine tested a Mazda 3 SkyActiv G 122hp 213nm on a dynometer. Results are 140hp 219nm, No chiptuning. Still prefer a N/A 2.0 than a small downsize engine. Better gasresponse at higher revs. And no small turbo that only boost at low revs. Besides Mazda's manual gearbox is one of the better ones. I respect Mazda that they don't follow the downsize trend.

Excellent proper review. I have been very happy with my 2015 Mazda 2 with the 115bhp engine and you soon get used to the non turbo driving style with power delivery a lot more linear. With perfectly positioned pedals for heel and toe and nicely weighted steering you feel like you are in a drivers car rather than just a tool to get you from a to b. Road testers have got used to turbos so driving a non turbo suddenly feels very odd but live with the car and you soon adapt and I dont need to rev the nuts off it to make good progress. I want a 3 skyactive x as my next car but prefer the greater control of a physical handbrake over the electric button which is becoming more normal sadly. Will have a test drive to see how I get on.

You should really opt for the new SkyActiv X engine if you're able to. That engine is amazing and brings you that bit of power you're missing in the SkyActiv G engine. Also: less fuel consumption for 180 horsepower and that for €950,- more. It should really be a nobrainer choice imo.

Though I love the Mazdas I think calling it a family hatch is a big stretch. At 197 centimetres tall with my seat in the driving position there is no room even for a child, also boot space in hatch is nearly half that of the saloon (according to official Mazda measurement and not reviewers measuring up to the roof of the hatch because it isn't legal to constantly obstruct your rear window).

Another great review. It seems there's a lot to recommend this car, but it's unfortunate that there's no estate model. That could solve rear visibility, rear access and headroom issues, and I'd buy one, even if nobody else would ;) There's a very good reason to go with the diesel if you live almost anywhere else in Europe other than the UK: diesel is considerably cheaper!

I yearn for foglights or something adding detail in the lower quarters of the front bumper, the styling otherwise does work quite well on these bigger wheels, but I just saw one today at a supermarket car park and it does look quite bulbous with the regular wheels you'd get at a reasonable spec.

The car is indeed beautiful and high quality, but there is one thing that bothers it: the new shape of the steering wheel. The coating is of high quality, but the profile is not round (tubular) as before, and therefore is not comfortable in any position of the hand, but in a very specific position. The uncomfortable grip makes driving uneasy. It is a great pity that they abandoned the "universal" form that suits every driver and every position.

I reckon the quality of this car is better than Ford Focus. But Focus is a bit cheaper (some countries perhaps not), and Focus in st line should feel a bit sportier. The 184 ps 3 zylinder engine feels sporty, but its not an skyrocket comparing to mazdas 2.0 180 ps engine (naturally aspirated).

Funny how he mentions the ford focus often when here in the U.S. it was a horrible car. Ford was sued over transmission issues related to the focus and fiesta. The focus isn't held in high regard here. Nice review though.

  • @danielleroux6490

    @danielleroux6490

It was only horrible because of the automatic transmission. The manual transmission Focus is and was excellent, which is the biggest shame that Americans are too ignorant, lazy, or just plain simple-minded to make the right choice to get the manual gearbox. Same with the Fiesta, great with the manual option. And this is coming from an American! I blame my fellow Americans for not getting the newest generation of the Focus here, because had they wisely chosen the manual transmission, there would be thousands of happy customers, not angry ones that are bitter at Ford.
