I also started on a CBF 125 in 2009. It's been so awesome in comfort, fuel economy and the very easy handling. Later I switched to a transalp 650 but I always missed that easy to use CBF 125 (for daily commute) so I sold my Transalp again and searched for a good used CBF. Unfortunately they cost used near by the price they cost new in my area so I ended up buying the CBR 250r for less money :) I can recommend that if you ever want to upgrade consider just a bigger CBF for a testride. They are just such great bikes for every day use...

Dan, thanks for sharing all of this. I have owned my Hornet since July. Love it. This Easter I took it on a tour from Madrid to Sevilla and to Cáceres, and back to Madrid. 1,192km total. Gorgeous weather on the way down, POURING rain on the way up! :-) I did a balance of wavy country roads, twisty mountain roads, and motorways; cruising, and relatively blistering speeds (only occasionally). I am 1.83 meters. Comfort was not a problem. Range varies greatly with speed (!). I tested a second-hand set of Shad semi-rigid luggage, with a strap-on system. Worked like a charm and looks more discreet than the official Honda set. I also have the quick-shifter and the deflection glass. Interesting data point: there was quite a bit of wind, with powerful gusts, etc. The bike was not bothered at all, like a rock even at higher speeds. My torso, on the other hand, was shaken a good bit. When there was no stormy wind, airflow is smooth. Let us know how it goes for you!

I have several bikes but my Hornet which ive owned a year now is my go to bike. Its great for doing most things and a lot of fun.The fact that it doesn't look that special and a bit small can be a bonus when leaving it parked up as most people dont look twice at it. Not toured on it yet though but thinking anout getting the tour pack and doing so.

Always nice when you find the exact video you were looking for!!

I also have this Hornet, and I've rented a CB650R for a couple of days out of curiosity. That 4 cylinder 650cc engine is delightful and it's retro styling is very good looking. But I'm also in the same opinion as you, it's a bit uncomfortable for long rides for some reason. My wrists were killing me by the end of the rent, because the handle bar makes an angle not natural for my wrists.

I know why you have hedges everywhere in the UK, but man do they make the riding less enjoyable. It is nice being able to see the beautiful countryside instead of staring at hedges all day.

yeah, like most countries theres great places to go touring, lake/peak district,wales,scotland,devon are all stunning but if you just want to go for a quick blast and dont live near any of these places... well you cant really, mainly because every corner is blind due to hedges everywhere, I live in the south east and theres no roads round here I would call fun lol

The TOURNET haha i love it!

I am looking to upgrade my daily commuter (CBR 250R) to a model with 2 Cylinders in the next years. Honda's 500ccm models are in general a little too expensive but very interresting to me since I always had Hondas so far and they used to be such conveniant, easy to use, easy to maintain bikes... I would like to stick with Honda. Anyway, I found the CB 500 f (or Hornet 500...) to be the cheapest among them. I would add a big Topcase (which can fit Pizza boxes) and a big windscreen and it would be ready for my daily use and even for Touring but I do not like the side bag solution to be honest. I have some of them myself but I do not use them on my bike. It always feels like they are in my way or "something is there which should not be there" to me. The key feature of this bike for me is the low seat height, the good seating position and the fact that you can do the maintenance so damn easy on it. The LED headlamp is also great.

I looked at one in a honda dealer here in Nottingham and was surprised how small it was, bet its a hoot to ride Dan, i still have a 2000 model cb500 which is also great fun and a great bike.

first thing i fit to mine was a powerbronze rear hugger and front extender, with H&B engine guards and a H&B rear minirack. I've also got an airrider seat coming in the next few days as my homemade inflatable seat proved fantastic last year, no numb bum at all. It amazes me at just how much luggage people think they need, so i'll just pack the minimum and use my Qbag4, (a skill i learned from long tours on my pushbike) which was big enough for a 1500 mile weeks tour of scotland last year, as i think panniers look ugly and i don't like them, but great to hear you are getting on with the bike, the accelleration is a real blast when you want it aint it, and so nippy in the lanes, it's proper fun. I have a quick question if you find time, and that's what mode do you tend to mostly use, and as the throttle can be a tad snatchy at low speeds, have you just adapted and how do you find it now you have had the bike it for a while, as i find i really having to concentrate a lot making small increments, but it's nothing major really. On a serious and on topic note. I’m riding down to see dad this April and I’m taking my Soeed Twin 1200. It will be Really interesting to see how it behaves on longer trips and with the panniers and a dry bag. And I have the brown comfort seat so that shouldn’t be a problem. But we’ll see. Next year I’m going to England (but probably on a Tiger 1200) and that will be my first long trip on a bike.

Im 6ft 1'' and rode my Speed twin around France, down the west side, across to Marseille and back up the east side, from Turriff near Aberdeen...about 3500 miles...completely stock bike with no problems but I'm used to nakeds. If I want a screen I'll take the car....Oh my partner was pillion the entire trip..which highlighted the rear shocks are crap lol

Hi Dan, useful video that, I had wondered what it would be like with luggage on. What's your take on riding the Hornet for a while versus the Trident 660? Any other views you have regarding the difference between those two bikes would also be welcome. TIA.

For sport/touring I would argue it needs more wind protection. Modest if not at least sporty windscreen and some minimal bodywork to remove some wind fatigue. The quintessential sport/tourer being the likes of the original player the BMW R100RS or even now the R1250RS. That's the benchmark at least with regards performance balanced with some rider comfort/protection.

The looks are good but i remeber being disapointed that the cencept art teasers pointed towards something cooler. They they release this. Basically what the CB 500 looked like 😅😅

I'm 6'1'' and on my cb125f my leg position is comfortable but on the yamaha mt07, that i'm learning on, it bends back a fair bit. I'm hoping the suzuki sv650 is better as thats what i wish to buy when i get my unrestricted license.

Hi, would you swap your 650 for this bike?

Will you miss the screen when touring or is your helmet noise actually less with no screen so less tiring?

I would say yes if the Transalp had tubeless tyres. Changing a tube is a real pain!

i wonder how the bike handles in dry conditions....lol Oh and sex adds have found you it seems..

Nice looking bike to be fair, especially in yellow. Those panniers look a bit pokey, would a laptop fit in them ?

really curious about the comments from touring the CB650R - I know in your germany video you mentioned about the pegs being weird - do you think some aftermarket pegs would've helped the comfort for touring? or was it more something to do with how they were fitted to the bike so aftermarket would've had the same angle and issue?@@Englishbikerdan

Im 100% convinced that this is a wonderful machine but why oh why did they have to go with that aging front headlight assembly? Was the CB650 really that bad on long term comfort? Why for how come?

@@Englishbikerdan I've noticed the design of the headlight actually has a purpose, to help deflect the wind up your helmet and not so much straight at your chest.

790 Duke,MT07 or Hornet 750? My 3 choices for A2 and can’t choose after watching all of them from your reviews 😅

i think the hornet has the most power, is the best value, a doddle to ride, has more than enough features, a great display, and has the honda reliability and network behind it & is easily upgradable to full 'A' when you pass your test, but im a bit biased as i considered the others but plumped for the hornet, although i wouldn't knock the others as they are all great bikes im sure, so maybe take a test ride or three and go for what you want. GL

790 Duke is the best bang for buck. BUT, there are other considerations to think about. Dealer support, servicing costs, resale value and of course, the elephant in the room, reliability! As the 790 is now built by CFMoto, time will tell how they hold up.

@@Englishbikerdan Yeah,I know alot have issues with the bike rusting a lot more when the bad weather hits.Costs for a KTM will probably be a bit steep due to it’ll need main dealer parts but part from that it does seem like the better bike (I think)

Real world touring demands some wind protection so a screen would be my first buy .

That twiddly knobs impractical for when the panniers are full and you’re wanting to detach them. Not the greatest but not the best ergonomic placement.

As I use the included bags, I've not had any issues. Take the bag out, twiddle the knob, pop the bag back in. Done.

I can't like the front end styling it's weird.

wow it's so ugly in the films and so different looking (I'd say way better) in person. I never wanted to see it in person once I saw the marketing materials.. but I saw one on my street and it's so different.. Honda is not making themselves an easy life :D Enjoy your long termer, Dan!

It's probably about as un-touring as things get really.

You can tour on literally any bike though. And I think it will be better than the 650R.
