I've read the book Backstreet Mom; Denise McLean mentions the meeting in New York when the boys signed with Jive. She wanted another lawyer to look through the contracts, and Lou was really offended, stating "This is the only deal on the table, and it's a take it or leave it situation." AJ, who was still underaged at the time, begged his mother with tears in his eyes to sign the contract because he had tried for so many years to make it in show business. He didn't get into the Mickey Mouse Club because he was considered too ethnic, his role on Nickelodeon's Hi Honey, I'm Home! was recast, and by now he was desperate.

Seriously? AJ really auditioned for the Mickey Mouse Club? Hmm, how come AJ himself never talks about that? Did they REALLY reject him for being "too ethnic"? That is incredibly racist. Oh I didn't know he was supposed to be on a Nickelodeon show

@@musiclover_kb4913 Hang on...are you telling me you've never seen the pilot episode of Hi Honey, I'm Home! here on KZread? I'm not sure why AJ never talks about it himself like Nick does, but according to Denise, AJ auditioned three times to become a mouseketeer. On his third try he was considered too old, and when Denise asked why they hadn't considered AJ the last two times he tried out, she was given that 'ethnic' excuse. Seriously, buy the book Backstreet Mom...you won't regret it.

Everyone keeps saying they were so stupid for working with him... that’s just now looking back that it seems stupid. At the time, he held all the power and leverage. An example is how he told them they couldn’t get an outside lawyer to look at the contract. “Now or never.” He knew if an outside lawyer saw it, then it would be obvious it’s trash. I bet the manager knew too. But what are you going do. He can literally replace you easily. Sign the contract and in theory this dream rolls on. No sign the contract and he fires you and replaces you.

@@musiclover_kb4913 meh. Gotta remember who we’re dealing with. This guy literally had the ability to “make their dreams come true”. I can easily see how someone could convince themselves that they wouldn’t fall for it. Don king is a known crock and look how well he did. I saw an interview of a boxer saying he was also warned. His logic was he’ll just really have his lawyers look over the contract. Still ended up trying to steal a million from him. The problem with all these boys bands and most artist is they don’t hold any leverage. Don’t wanna sign? Cool you’ll get replaced in minutes.

It's crazy how the answered an ad, nick missed out on MMC and they toured in schools till they went big. That is a huge risk. Lou did something right but sadly the guys got ripped off. I didn't know the BSB were a sweatshop boy band with them doing loads of work to get into a stadium. Similar story to the spice girls. A lot of hard work. Nick was so young then and for his mom to trust an old man like that. Yikes. BSB would have made more money if Lou didn't screw them over.

This is totally incorrect and I don't know where you got that from. It is NOT true. Backstreet Boys was really the first big act that worked with Cheiron Studios. Ace of Bass had a few hits from there around 1992-1993, but it was NOT Max Martin. It was Denniz PoP! Max Martin wasn't even at Cheiron until 1995. The first major record he worked on was Ace of Bass' "Lucky Love" (1995), and even then he was working under Denniz PoP. At that same time in mid-1995, he worked again under Denniz PoP to help produce Backstreet Boys' "We've Got It Goin' On", also with Herbie Chrichlow. Kristian Lundin, Ulf Ekberg, and Jonas Berggren was also heavily involved at Cheiron before Max Martin was there. And still all these records that came out of Cheiron at that time were mostly European successes. "Quit Playing Games (With My Heart)" (1996) was the first huge worldwide hit that Max Martin co-produced, with Chrichlow basically writing it. Britney Spears' "Baby One More Time" (1999) was the first huge hit that he wrote and produced entirely by himself. As far as I can recall no TLC hits or any songs for that matter were written or produced by anyone from Cheiron. Please do research.

Contracts are notoriously long, and it’s not exactly easy to translate. This is all by design. He knew if a real lawyer read it, then they would have known its bs. That’s why he said sign it now or never. It goes back to who has the power. He essentially told them sign now and make a ton of money with me, or don’t sign and I’ll just move on.
