The Hitch-Hiker (Hitchhiker) by Roald Dahl - Short Story Summary, Analysis, Review

Welcome to the CodeX Cantina where our mission is to get more people talking about books! Today we talk about "The Hitch-Hiker" by Roald Dahl. We pull in some research from the USA on the history of hitchhiking but keep in mind this doesn't always translate to worldwide standards; we are just taking it as a starting point. We also talk about the usage of Similes, Personification, Zoomorphism and more!

Hopefully soon! We had someone purchase a book for us so we're working through that as it was kind for them to have done as such. As soon as I'm done with it, Nadeko is my next priority.

I just read this, and I appreciate hearing both of your thoughts on this interesting story. I didn't think of the historical aspects of this story, but that's important to consider.

I’ve not read this but I’m teaching The Magic Finger by Roald Dahl to a class. We all love it. I’ll have to check this out.

I've always loved his children's stories and would love to see where he takes his readers when it's more mature. I've heard that much of it is quite dark. This is great! Will you be reading any more of his work? ::)) Dani

I ran out of time to comment yesterday, but I really enjoyed this story and hearing your thoughts! Even if there wasn't a lot to analyze. Krypto's 4 surprised me 😛 I'd give it a 6. I kept expecting something nasty to happen lol I didn't even know Dahl wrote outside of his children's fiction! Fun selection guys!

Interesting story! Having not read it, would you say that the Dahl was intentionally trying to increase the tension and put the audience on-guard with the rat-like descriptions, etc., to prepare for a surprising reversal?

Not a bad story at all. 6.5/10 for me. I haven't read much Dahl, but what I've read has been excellent as far as children's literature goes except for Charlie and the Glass Elevator. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was excellent, but the sequel was awful.

I haven't read Glass Elevator. Even his adult writing seems more young adult targeted. I remember hearing some criticism on some issues in his writing. I'm on the lookout for it.

*sigh* I could only think of Stephen King's Rat once you remarked how the narrator compared the hitch hiker to a rat 3 times...lol
