This episode I watched in eighties in our newly introduced night programme, and now again, binging almost all episodes. I remember this non-linear order of events, when we are presented with that body first was smart and the twist impressed me very much. It was a variation of "he ate murder weapon" from "Proof of Guilt", this time real perfect murder, though not premeditated. Perhaps an argument in favour of theory that only unpremeditated murders can be perfect, not vice versa. When I first watched the episode, I wad under impression of Blessed's other roles, in "I Claudius" and movie "Last Valley". And I remembered good writing, namely, Blessed-character's professionalism: when the wife (Susan) began her story with "I didn't lock the door", the detective (Blessed) instinctively sensed guiding in the words, and interrupted her "Now, now, let's begin from the beginning", but since he knew her and her husband he completely overheard anything weird in her statement. If he didn't knew the family if it weren't his colleague, perhaps he would have sensed the rat. But to literally eat the murder weapon - it's perfect crime, all right.

She entered the house by backdoor. I still wonder how the hell a detective didn't know that his wife is in sixth month pregnancy? I want to share my thought: who's the lamb here? Answer- all of them. 1. The wife: she's too naive to realize that her husband wants to break up. 2. The husband: too naive to realize that his wife will accept her fate. 3. Polices: too naive to suspect the wife. They even don't remember that they shouldn't eat anything at crime scene - all thanks to the excellent "innocence" of the wife. But at the end: "Lamb to the slaughter", the wife turns from a lamb to the slaughter. And her husband, the polices, and grocer become lambs for that slaughter.
